Capture screenshots with the game platform’s built-in tool, then export the images you need and file them in a consistent folder structure. Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 5 each provide a built-in library; for reference work, treat that library as a convenient starting point rather than your only archive.

Choose a capture method that preserves the image you need

Use the platform’s capture control first when you want a clean in-game image. A desktop screen capture is a fallback for games or emulators where the built-in method is inconvenient, but it may capture the displayed screen rather than the game’s native image or metadata.

Steam on PC

With the Steam Overlay active, press F12 by default to take a screenshot. Steam can add the image to its screenshot library and open the Screenshot Uploader after a game session. If a capture does not appear, check that the Overlay is enabled and confirm the active hotkey and screenshot settings in Steam’s in-game settings. See Steam’s screenshot documentation.

Nintendo Switch

Press the console’s Capture Button to take a screenshot, then select Album from the HOME Menu to view it. Nintendo’s instructions apply to Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED. Details are in Nintendo’s capture and viewing guide.

Its tools include sorting and filtering, favorites, multiple selection, per-game grouping, renaming, and copying captures to a connected USB device. The Recently created card can show up to 15 recent captures; that is a view of recent items, not a storage limit. See PlayStation’s Media Gallery guide.

PlayStation 4

Open Capture Gallery to select a screenshot or clip and use the console’s sharing flow. The available guidance explains sharing, not a complete current export or backup procedure, so do not assume that sharing alone creates a separate archive. See PlayStation’s PS4 sharing guide.

Windows screen capture as a fallback

For a PC game or emulator that is awkward to capture through its platform, Microsoft’s Snipping Tool can capture the visible screen; Microsoft says captures are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder. Use an in-game or platform capture when you need the game’s native image rather than a picture of what is currently displayed. Instructions are on Microsoft’s Snipping Tool support page.

Export important captures instead of relying on the console library

For images that would be difficult to recreate, make a copy in storage you control. The export options differ by platform:

Copy Nintendo Switch captures to a computer

  1. On the Switch HOME Menu, open System Settings > Data Management > Manage Screenshots and Videos > Copy to a Computer via USB Connection.
  2. Connect the console directly to the computer—not through the dock—with a USB cable that supports data transfer. Nintendo says this method works with Windows; non-Windows systems may require additional MTP software, which Nintendo does not guarantee.
  3. If USB transfer is unavailable, use a microSD card as the alternative transfer route.

Nintendo’s computer-transfer instructions specify the cable and connection requirements. The cable is for transferring files; it is not needed to take screenshots on the console.

Copy PS5 captures to USB

In Media Gallery, select the captures you want and use the option to copy them to a connected USB device. For short-term access, supported PS5 screenshots and video clips can also be uploaded automatically to the PlayStation App. They remain available there for 14 days after creation, subject to supported file type, app linking, settings, connectivity, and regional availability. That period makes the app useful for retrieval, not a permanent archive. See PlayStation’s PS App capture guide for Ireland for the stated availability and setup conditions.

Build a folder structure that makes images findable

Organize exported images around how you expect to retrieve them. A practical starting structure is Game / YYYY-MM-DD / location-or-purpose, with folders or labels for chapters, areas, characters, builds, or research questions when those distinctions matter.

  • Review captures soon after playing. Remove accidental duplicates and frames that do not show the detail you need.
  • Give filenames useful context. For example, 2026-10-07-map-north-gate.png is easier to search than a default numbered filename. Include the game name in the filename if images may be separated from their game folder.
  • Preserve originals. Keep an untouched capture and save annotated or cropped versions separately, so edits do not replace the reference image.
  • Make a second copy of irreplaceable images. Store it on another drive or backup location rather than treating a single device or library as protection.

These are organizational practices, not features guaranteed by every platform. Do not assume that different systems preserve capture dates, filenames, or other metadata in the same way.

Keep screenshots and recordings straight

Steam screenshots and Steam Game Recording are separate features. Background recordings use allocated disk space and may be overwritten when that space fills; save clips you want to keep. This overwrite behavior concerns recordings, not the screenshot workflow. See Steam’s Game Recording documentation.
