To verify a blockchain payment, find its transaction hash in the sending wallet or exchange, look it up on an explorer for the exact network used, and check its status, confirmations, destination address, and amount. If it is pending, missing, or marked successful but the funds are not visible, the right next step depends on what the explorer shows—so check the original transaction before attempting to send again.
What you need to verify a crypto payment
A transaction hash (also called a transaction ID) is a lookup key for public transaction data. It can help you see whether a transaction was broadcast and included in a block, but a matching hash alone does not establish that you used the intended network or recipient.
- Never share your seed phrase, private key, wallet password, or one-time authentication code to get help with a transaction.
- A block explorer is a read-only way to view transaction data. It is not a support channel and cannot reverse a transfer.
How to check a transaction step by step
- Find the transaction hash. Open the sending wallet or exchange, go to its activity or transaction details, and copy the transaction ID/hash. If no hash is shown, check the platform’s transaction status page or ask its support whether the payment was broadcast.
- Open an explorer for the exact network. Search the hash on a block explorer that supports the network used to send the asset. A token or coin sent on one network may not appear in an explorer for another. Trezor provides explorer examples for Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin and notes that a transfer may be confirmed on a different EVM network from the one currently displayed in a wallet: Trezor’s missing-transaction guidance.
- Read the transaction status and confirmation information. Check whether the explorer says pending, included/confirmed, successful, or failed, and note any confirmation count or finality indicator it displays. Status labels and thresholds depend on the network, wallet, and service.
- Match the transaction to the payment instructions. Compare the sender and recipient addresses, amount or token, and network. A transaction can be confirmed on-chain and still be the wrong payment if it went to an unintended address or network.
- Check the receiving service separately. If the explorer shows a successful transaction but a receiving exchange has not credited the deposit, check its account notices and deposit requirements. A service may require its own confirmation threshold or other account conditions.
What “pending” means—and why a transaction can wait
Wallets and services do not use one universal status vocabulary. Blockchain.com describes pending as submitted but not yet included in a block, confirming as included but below the applicable completion threshold, and confirmed as having met that threshold: Blockchain.com’s explanation of transaction confirmations.
Some wallets keep showing “Pending” after a transaction has entered a block. BitBox says its Bitcoin app changes the label to Complete after six confirmations; with one to five confirmations, the transaction is already in a block. Common causes of a delay include a low transaction fee, network congestion, slower block timing, and spending assets that are themselves unconfirmed. A transaction sent through a centralized exchange may also still be processing at that provider: Exodus’s pending-transaction guidance.
Troubleshoot based on what the explorer shows
The hash appears, but the transaction is pending or has zero confirmations
The explorer has not recorded the transaction as confirmed. If available, check the fee and network congestion information shown by the wallet or explorer; an estimate is not a guarantee. Avoid immediately sending a second payment: the delayed original and the duplicate could both eventually confirm.

If you control the sending wallet, follow only its documented instructions for the specific network. Bitcoin fee bumping and replacing or canceling an EVM transaction are different processes. On Ethereum, Trezor notes that a pending transaction with a lower nonce can block later transactions from the same address: Trezor’s transaction troubleshooting guidance. If someone else sent the payment, ask that sender or their wallet provider to investigate; a recipient generally cannot change the sender’s transaction.
The hash cannot be found
Check that you copied the hash correctly and that the explorer matches the network used. Refresh the transaction details in the wallet and the explorer. If the hash remains absent, or the wallet and explorer still disagree, contact the sending wallet or exchange before trying again. The explorer says confirmed or successful, but the recipient cannot see the funds
Compare the destination address and network with the original payment instructions. Then check that the receiving wallet is showing the right account, token, and network; the asset may be present under a different account or network view. For an exchange deposit, review account notices and the exchange’s deposit requirements. If the on-chain details match but the deposit remains uncredited, contact the receiving provider with the transaction hash and relevant public details. Coinbase’s guidance, for example, directs users to wait at least 30 minutes before escalating a pending Coinbase send; this is a Coinbase support instruction, not a general blockchain waiting period: Coinbase’s pending-transaction guidance.
The explorer says failed or reverted
Do not treat a failed or reverted transaction as a successful payment. Status meanings and the next step depend on the network and the platform that initiated the transaction. Check the transaction details and the sending platform’s instructions before attempting another payment.

How long should confirmation take?
There is no universal confirmation count or waiting period that applies to every cryptocurrency or service. For scale, Exodus lists typical pending times of 60 minutes or less for Bitcoin and five minutes or less for Ethereum, BNB, Cardano, Litecoin, and Solana. Likewise, BitBox’s six-confirmation label is specific to its Bitcoin app, while receiving exchanges can apply their own credit thresholds. Use the sending wallet’s and receiving service’s instructions for their own status labels and escalation steps rather than applying one service’s timing or confirmation rule to every chain.
