Each points to a different check; there is no single fix for every black screen or slow game.
This guide covers xemu, a free, open-source emulator for the original Microsoft Xbox—not Xbox 360 or Xbox One emulation.
First identify what is failing
Note whether xemu itself opens, whether the Xbox guest reaches a display, whether only one game fails, and whether the game starts but runs slowly. Record the exact error text, game title, xemu version, host operating system, and computer hardware. Those details help distinguish a configuration problem from a title-specific compatibility issue or a performance problem.
- xemu does not initialize or shows a startup black screen: check the system files and configuration.
- One game shows a black screen, fails to load, or reports a dirty disc: check the game backup, image format, cache, and compatibility information.
- The game starts but runs slowly: gather setup details and consult the performance guidance for your operating system.
- A controller is missing or does not respond: check controller detection and mapping separately from game loading.
If xemu will not initialize or shows a startup black screen
xemu needs three system components to boot: an MCPX boot ROM image, a compatible BIOS image, and a hard disk image. Missing, mismatched, or corrupt MCPX or BIOS images can prevent the guest from initializing its display. Check that the files are valid, compatible, and selected in xemu’s configuration; the project says MCPX and BIOS dumps should be from a 1.0 Xbox. See xemu’s required-files documentation and its FAQ.

A retail BIOS that has not been modified cannot boot games in xemu because key DRM functions are not implemented. The project’s documentation recommends a debug BIOS or a modified retail BIOS capable of booting unsigned software. Use system files obtained lawfully; do not download copyrighted firmware from unofficial sources.
If a game fails to load, shows a black screen, or reports a dirty disc
- Check the game backup. Confirm that your own disc backup is sound and in XISO format, as described in xemu’s troubleshooting guide. A bad dump or unsupported image format can prevent a game from loading.
- Try clearing the game’s cache. Cache problems can cause loading failures. The troubleshooting guide also suggests trying a blank hard disk image when investigating cache-related issues.
- Check the game’s compatibility information. Consult the xemu compatibility list for the title and compare the listed version with the one you are running. Compatibility can change between releases; a title marked playable is not guaranteed to work with every setup or image.
- Consider a possible regression. If the game worked in an earlier xemu version but fails in a newer one, compare against the version noted on the compatibility page. If the earlier version works and the newer one does not, report the change as a possible regression; that does not by itself prove every current failure is an emulator bug.
If the game runs slowly
“Slow” can mean low frame rate, stuttering, or game logic running slowly. Note which describes the problem, along with the game title, xemu version, host operating system, and CPU and GPU. Without those details, it is not possible to identify a specific bottleneck or justify a hardware upgrade.

Use xemu’s FAQ to find its system requirements and Windows or Linux performance troubleshooting guidance. Performance can change as xemu evolves, so advice and compatibility reports may be version-sensitive. The available documentation does not establish a universal upgrade, minimum specification, or performance figure that applies to every game and computer.
If xemu detects a controller but it is not selectable
Controller detection is separate from game booting. xemu uses SDL3, and SDL can detect a physical controller as a raw joystick without a standardized gamepad mapping. In that case, the controller may not appear in xemu’s gamepad selector. Check the xemu log for an “unmapped joystick” message, then follow the controller documentation to configure a mapping, including its instructions for using an external SDL mapping database.

The controller documentation also notes platform-specific limitations, including broken hot plugging on macOS and early BIOS revisions where emulated gamepads may not function. These input issues should not be treated as evidence that a game itself failed to boot.

- The game title and the exact error message or symptom.
- The xemu version and host operating system.
- Your CPU and GPU, if the issue is slow performance.
- Whether xemu reaches its display and whether other games work.
- Whether the game backup is in XISO format, and whether clearing the cache or checking the compatibility page changed anything.
- For controller issues, the controller model and any “unmapped joystick” message in the log.
