To reduce false positives in endpoint detection and response (EDR), first identify which protection capability generated the alert, then verify its evidence before changing a rule. Classify it as a false positive only if the malicious label is wrong; accurate but low-priority activity can be tuned or suppressed without being relabeled. Prefer a narrowly scoped alert-tuning rule or vendor correction over an antivirus exclusion, which can reduce protection without stopping EDR alerts.
Start by identifying what generated the alert
“EDR alert” does not always identify the source of a detection. It may come from endpoint detection and response, antivirus, custom threat intelligence, a custom detection rule, an attack-surface-reduction rule, or another protection feature. The right fix depends on which capability produced it. Microsoft recommends investigating alerts and using portal telemetry, advanced hunting, device event logs, performance tools, and protection history to establish the source. See Microsoft’s guidance on addressing false positives and false negatives.
Before changing policy, record the alert name and ID, detection source, affected device, time, file or process and path (if applicable), user and business context, evidence, and action already taken. That context helps distinguish an incorrect classification from a legitimate detection of expected activity—and prevents an exception for one component from being applied to another.
Decide whether it is false, true, or simply low priority
Review the alert details and behavior before suppressing anything. Microsoft’s guidance puts the distinction plainly: “Before you classify or suppress an alert, determine whether the alert is accurate, a false positive, or benign.” Read the evidence and consider whether the activity fits an authorized application, administrative task, or security test, and whether anything else about the behavior is suspicious.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- True positive: The alert accurately identifies potentially malicious activity. Investigate it; do not suppress it just because it recurs.
- False positive: The activity was incorrectly classified as malicious. Record the evidence supporting that conclusion, then correct the source or classify the alert accordingly.
- Accurate but low-priority or expected: The detection is correct, but the activity is understood and unimportant to the organization. Keep its true-positive classification and, where appropriate, suppress or tune the repeat to reduce queue noise.
Queue reduction is not the same as detection correction. A suppression rule changes how matching alerts are presented or handled; it does not prove that a detection was wrong.
Choose the narrowest control that addresses the cause
The controls below are concrete Microsoft Defender examples, not universal steps for every EDR product. Names, scope, rule precedence, and behavior vary by vendor and may change. Check the documentation for your product before implementing an equivalent control.

| Control | What it changes | When it fits | Key limitation or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alert tuning or suppression | How matching alerts are displayed or handled; Microsoft XDR tuning can hide or resolve matching alerts or set signals as behaviors. | Known, benign repeat activity or an accurate but low-value alert. | A broad or poorly conditioned rule can hide related suspicious behavior. In Microsoft’s documented built-in tuning case, the rules do not cover custom detection rules or Custom TI. |
| Vendor analysis | Investigates whether a file or other supported entity was misclassified. | A file or entity appears to be incorrectly detected as malicious. | Availability and submission workflow depend on the vendor. Microsoft’s service accepts files and certain other entities for analysis. |
| Indicator or exclusion | Depending on the control, may allow a particular entity or prevent a specific protection capability from acting on it. | A narrow, immediate mitigation is necessary while a business-impacting block is investigated. | Can create a protection gap. An antivirus exclusion may not stop an EDR alert, and behavior varies by operating system and capability. |
Use tuning for known benign repeats
Where the detection is accurate but unhelpful in a known internal workflow—or a confirmed false alert keeps recurring—use a tuning rule with conditions tied to relevant evidence and the narrowest workable scope. Microsoft Defender XDR supports actions to hide or resolve matching alerts, or set signals as behaviors; hidden alerts may remain available in hunting tables. Check the rule’s matching conditions and confirm that similar but suspicious activity will not also be hidden.
Microsoft cautions that tuning is intended for known internal applications or security tests that generate expected activity. Its documented built-in tuning rules do not cover custom detection rules or Custom TI, so those detections need to be addressed at their source rather than assumed to be covered by built-in tuning. See Microsoft Defender XDR alert tuning.

Ask the vendor to analyze a suspected misclassification
If a file is incorrectly detected as malicious, submit it for analysis through the vendor’s supported process. A vendor-confirmed correction addresses the underlying classification rather than merely hiding its alert. Microsoft’s false-positive guidance describes submitting eligible files and other supported entities for analysis.
Use exclusions only as a narrow, temporary exception
An antivirus exclusion changes what the antivirus engine scans; it is not the same as tuning an alert. Microsoft warns that “Creating an exclusion or an allow indicator creates a protection gap.” Its documentation also notes that Windows antivirus exclusions may not suppress EDR alerts. A broad folder or process exclusion can therefore reduce coverage and still fail to resolve the alert. See Microsoft’s overview of exclusions and indicators in Defender for Endpoint.

If an immediate business-impacting block requires mitigation, choose an exception appropriate to the actual detection source and limit it to the smallest supported entity and scope. Treat it as temporary: pursue vendor analysis or a durable rule correction, then remove or revise the exception. Do not assume one antivirus setting disables every detection capability.

- Apply one targeted change. Record the rule or exception, its conditions, the detection capability it affects, and the reason for the change.
- Observe the original workflow again. Confirm the unwanted alert or business disruption is resolved under the conditions that triggered it.
- Check related coverage. Verify that relevant events remain available for investigation and that legitimate detections still receive review. In Defender XDR, hidden alerts may remain in hunting tables.
- Review endpoint remediation history. Confirm the change did not leave an unexpected block, remediation action, or other unresolved effect.
- Assign ownership and a review date. Document the owner, scope, date, reason, and planned review or expiry for every exception. Microsoft recommends periodically auditing exclusions and retaining why each was needed.
For CrowdStrike, SentinelOne, or another EDR platform, use its own documentation to verify equivalent control names, rule precedence, audit history, and scope. Microsoft’s controls are examples, not universal vendor instructions.
