You can stream reality TV on YouTube around the clock only if you have the rights to broadcast the programs, music, and other included material in every territory where the stream is available. A TV subscription or a copy of an episode does not grant rebroadcast rights. For an authorized channel, the practical setup is a verified, eligible YouTube channel, an encoder, rights-holder coordination where needed, and a tested plan for monitoring and recovery.
Get the rights before setting up the stream
Confirm that your agreements cover continuous live streaming on YouTube, the territories where viewers can watch, and every relevant part of the program—including music. YouTube’s Livestream terms and conditions place responsibility for the necessary rights and applicable requirements on the streamer. TV shows are copyrighted audiovisual works; a subscription, a disclaimer, or commentary around a full episode does not by itself authorize rebroadcasting.
Permission, a valid copyright exception, public-domain status, or applicable Creative Commons terms may provide a route to use particular material, but their application depends on the work, agreement, and jurisdiction. YouTube cautions that none of these routes guarantees that a copyright issue will not arise. Get qualified legal advice for questions about a specific license or territory.
Ask about the exact uses and territories
Before scheduling a continuous feed, make sure the rights holder has authorized the intended live use, territories, and any music included in the shows. If your rights are limited by time, territory, platform, or format, configure the broadcast accordingly rather than assuming a YouTube stream is covered by a general distribution agreement.

Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. For a continuous, pre-produced TV schedule, an encoder workflow is generally the relevant option because it sends a prepared audio/video feed to YouTube.
Set up an encoder and connect it to YouTube
- Prepare the program feed. Assemble only content you are authorized to stream, and decide how episodes or other segments will be scheduled. Make sure the audio and video play correctly before sending them to YouTube.
- Choose an encoding workflow. YouTube describes both software encoding and dedicated hardware encoders. It recommends professional-grade hardware for higher-production-value events, but says expensive equipment is not necessary for every stream. Its encoder setup guidance explains the available workflow; it does not prescribe a universal resolution or bitrate for every program.
- Configure the live event in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream in the Live Control Room and select the relevant stream settings. Use the encoder’s preview to confirm that the intended feed reaches YouTube before making it public.
- Connect the encoder with the stream key. Enter the key provided by YouTube into the encoder. YouTube describes the stream key as password-like: do not publish or share it. Reset it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder guidance.
- Test before the scheduled start. Check the preview, audio, and video; test encoder failover; and confirm that any local archive is intact and accessible on the channel or watch page and on mobile devices. YouTube recommends preparing in advance and monitoring stream quality continuously.
Coordinate Content ID and prevent avoidable interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material; continued use can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. These checks can affect even programming you are licensed to show if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel before going live, and confirm that the arrangement covers the content you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Content ID live matching is not a workaround for a channel that lacks rights. YouTube limits access to certain partners and describes requirements that include global rights and exclusive ownership of the live content; the workflow also excludes third-party material such as commercials or background music. It is a rights-management feature for eligible partners, not a way to clear television programming for rebroadcast. Details are in YouTube’s Content ID live matching guidance.
Plan for viewer rewind and archives
YouTube’s DVR setting can let viewers rewind during a live stream, but it is not unlimited for an all-day broadcast. YouTube warns that DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours; viewers also cannot seek to a point before the stream began. Review the DVR option in the Live Control Room and set viewer expectations if your schedule runs continuously. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Do not treat the live feed as the only copy of your schedule. Check that your encoder’s local recordings, if you use them, are being created and that the resulting files play. YouTube also recommends checking archive integrity and accessibility on channel/watch pages and mobile devices.
Keep the broadcast operational
Before going live
- Confirm that the channel is verified and eligible to stream.
- Confirm rights for the programs, music, territories, and continuous live use.
- Ask the rights holder to allowlist the channel where required.
- Check that the stream key is entered securely and has not been exposed.
- Preview the feed and verify that both picture and sound are correct.
- Test encoder failover and verify any local archive files.
While the stream is running
- Monitor audio and video quality continuously, as YouTube advises.
- Watch the Live Control Room for warnings or signs that the feed has stopped.
- Keep a way to respond to a stream interruption and confirm the encoder can reconnect.
- Check the viewer-facing watch page on a mobile device as well as the channel page.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream. | The channel may not be verified or may have a live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. | Check channel verification and live-stream eligibility in YouTube Studio, then follow YouTube’s setup guidance. |
| The live feed is replaced by a placeholder or interrupted. | YouTube may have detected a third-party content match, or the rights holder may not have allowlisted the channel. | Stop using material you are not authorized to stream. For licensed content, contact the rights holder about allowlisting and verify that your agreement covers the intended use. Consult YouTube’s live copyright guidance. |
| The encoder does not connect to the event. | The stream key may be incorrect, exposed, or associated with a different event setup. | Check the key in the Live Control Room and encoder. Treat it as a secret, and reset it if compromised; see YouTube’s encoder guidance. |
| Viewers cannot rewind to the beginning. | The stream is very long, so YouTube’s DVR capability may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours; viewers cannot seek before the stream began. | Check the DVR setting and avoid promising unlimited rewind. Refer to YouTube’s DVR guidance. |
| The broadcast has no usable archive. | The archive may not have completed correctly or may not be accessible where expected. | Check the local recording, if enabled, and test the archive on the channel/watch page and a mobile device before relying on it. |
Equipment and monetization do not replace rights
YouTube supports software and hardware encoder workflows. Professional-grade hardware is its recommendation for higher-production-value events, not a requirement for every channel; choose based on the production you need and the way you can monitor and recover the feed. No encoder can grant permission to rebroadcast a show.

YouTube lists ads and Super Chat as live-stream revenue options and says memberships are available to some channels. Monetization settings do not change the rights required for the programming or music. Review YouTube’s live settings guidance and the relevant agreements before enabling revenue features.
