When an endpoint detection and response (EDR) agent appears to slow a computer, first confirm which process is consuming resources and reproduce the slowdown while collecting diagnostic data. Then compare the evidence with the active workload, scans, configuration, and other security software before changing settings. A slow device does not, by itself, prove the agent is at fault.
Start by identifying the process and reproducing the slowdown
Record the affected device and operating system, the endpoint agent and version, the process using CPU or memory, when the slowdown occurs, and what the user was doing. Reproduce the issue while collecting measurements: data gathered after the slowdown has ended may miss the activity that triggered it.
The detailed tools and causes below apply to Microsoft Defender Antivirus on Windows and Windows Server. If the affected agent is another product, or the device runs macOS or Linux, use that vendor’s documentation and collection instructions rather than assuming the same process names or remedies apply.
Choose a diagnostic tool that matches the question
| Tool | Best use | Collection guidance |
|---|---|---|
| Microsoft Defender performance analyzer | Start here for a Defender-specific performance investigation. | Microsoft recommends collecting Defender diagnostic data and using the analyzer for performance-specific problems. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance. |
| Process Monitor (ProcMon) | Use if the analyzer does not narrow the cause; it can help show file and process activity associated with the slowdown. | Microsoft suggests collecting ProcMon data for five to ten minutes. Follow the linked Microsoft guidance for the relevant collection steps. |
| Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) | Use for a deeper Windows performance trace when the earlier evidence is not enough. | Keep the trace short: Microsoft advises limiting it to three to five minutes. |
These collection durations are Microsoft’s operational guidance, not benchmark results or guarantees that a trace will reveal the cause. Collect only what is needed and follow your organization’s privacy and diagnostic-data handling rules.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check common Microsoft Defender Antivirus triggers
Microsoft documents several possible causes of Defender-related performance issues. Treat them as leads to verify against the trace and the affected workload, not as proof that any one is responsible.
- Files that take more work to inspect: launching unsigned executables or libraries can trigger real-time, scheduled, or on-demand scanning. Complex formats used like databases, including HTA or CHM files, and obfuscated scripts may also take more CPU to extract or scan.
- Scans running at unexpected times: scheduled scans and scans that follow security intelligence updates can account for work outside the schedule an administrator expects. Check scan timing against the observed slowdown.
- Large files on redirected or network storage: large ISO or VHDX files in a redirected profile or network share may take longer to scan when network latency is involved. Microsoft also notes that file-hash computation for file indicators adds overhead, and that copying large files from network shares—especially over VPN—may affect performance.
- Other security and network software: antivirus, EDR, data loss prevention (DLP), endpoint privilege management, and VPN products can conflict or add workload. Confirm which components are installed and active rather than assuming a single product is doing all the work.
- Non-persistent virtual desktop images: a non-persistent VDI image sealed before Defender cache maintenance completes can have performance problems. Check the image-sealing process and maintenance timing.
- Exclusions that do not match the intended path: a misspelled path exclusion may fail to exclude the intended location. Microsoft documents this validation command:
MpCmdRun.exe -CheckExclusion -Path <PathAndFile or Path>. Use the actual path you intend to validate. - Protection components outside a path exclusion: a path exclusion changes scanning flows, but Behavior Monitoring and Network Real-time Inspection may still contribute to performance issues. Do not assume an exclusion rules out all Defender activity.
For the documented causes and product-specific procedures, see Microsoft’s Defender performance troubleshooting page, which applies to Defender Antivirus on Windows and Windows Server.

Make the smallest mitigation supported by the evidence
Choose a change only after the trace points to a plausible trigger. Microsoft’s options include lowering scheduled scan priority, setting a scan CPU limit, reviewing scan scheduling, completing Defender cache maintenance before sealing a VDI image, validating an exclusion, or moving an unnecessary large disk image off a redirected network location.
Microsoft documents a 50% default CPU usage limit per scan and says it can be lowered to 20% or 30%. These are Defender configuration figures, not a promise of a specific improvement on a particular device. A lower limit can make a scan take longer. Microsoft also documents an idle-only scan condition based on overall CPU being below 80%; check the applicable policy and configuration rather than treating that threshold as a general test for whether a device is idle.

Exclusions or reduced scanning can reduce protection coverage. Use them only when a demonstrated need justifies the change, scope them narrowly, and obtain the appropriate security approval. Do not copy broad exclusions from another environment. A path exclusion alone may not stop Behavior Monitoring or Network Real-time Inspection from contributing to the issue.
When multiple security products are present, inventory the active components and consult each vendor’s supported coexistence guidance. Microsoft recommends adding the other product’s relevant paths and processes to exclusions in both products when non-Microsoft security software is present. Validate that recommendation with your organization and the vendors; it is product-specific guidance, not a universal configuration for every combination.

Escalate with a useful evidence package
If the measurements point to a particular product, check that vendor’s knowledge base or support center for known issues, then open a support case if needed. Include the agent and operating system versions, reproduction steps, affected workload, and relevant trace or diagnostic package. Collect and share those files according to the vendor’s instructions and your organization’s data-handling requirements.
