If only some M.2 SSDs appear on a PCIe expansion card, the cause is often the connection between the card and the motherboard—not a failed drive. Multi-drive cards need the host system to provide a usable PCIe path to each SSD. On a passive card, that commonly means the motherboard and CPU must support the card’s required PCIe lane split, known as bifurcation. The exact answer depends on the card, motherboard, CPU, PCIe slot, and installed devices.
Why a card with several M.2 sockets may show only some drives
An M.2 socket on an expansion card is only a physical connector. For an SSD to be detected, the card must route PCIe lanes from the motherboard slot to that socket, and the host system must expose the required lanes.
A passive multi-drive card typically relies on PCIe bifurcation: the motherboard divides the lanes from one PCIe slot into smaller groups and assigns them to separate SSDs. If the selected slot, motherboard firmware, or CPU does not support the required split, the system may detect only some drives or none. A connector that is physically x16 does not necessarily have 16 electrical lanes available; it may be wired for fewer, or its lanes may be shared with other devices.
Some multi-drive cards include a PCIe switch and have different host requirements. Check the specific card’s manual rather than assuming every card works through bifurcation or supports the same number of drives.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting individual SSDs
Confirm the card and SSD protocols
Look up the card’s manual and check whether it accepts PCIe/NVMe SSDs, SATA M.2 SSDs, or both. The M.2 form factor alone does not establish compatibility: an M.2-shaped SATA drive will not work in a PCIe-only adapter.
Find out whether the card is passive or uses a switch
Identify the card’s topology and the manufacturer’s requirements. For a passive card, note the required bifurcation mode and host-slot lane width. For a card with a PCIe switch, follow its stated CPU, motherboard, and slot requirements instead.

Check the exact motherboard slot and CPU
Consult the motherboard manual and CPU specifications for the selected PCIe slot’s electrical lane width, supported bifurcation modes, and lane allocation. Account for the GPU and any other installed cards or devices that use PCIe lanes. ASUS’s guidance likewise advises checking CPU lane capacity, motherboard support, and the selected slot; the supported SSD count can vary by CPU and board combination: ASUS support guidance.
Check resource sharing on the motherboard
Some boards share resources among PCIe slots, M.2 sockets, and SATA ports. Using one connection may disable or limit another. Check the exact motherboard’s lane-sharing table and notes rather than relying on a general rule. ASRock documents examples of M.2 sockets sharing resources with a PCIe slot or SATA port on some AM4 boards, and notes that using PCIE2 disables M2_4 on the Z890 Nova WiFi: ASRock support FAQ.

Set the required bifurcation mode in UEFI
If the motherboard supports bifurcation, enable the mode required by the card for the correct slot. Firmware menus and available modes vary by board, so use its manual to find the applicable setting.
For one model-specific example, the ASRock Z890 Nova WiFi manual says its supplied expansion card connects through PCIe Gen4 x4 and supports four PCIe Gen4 x1 SSD connections. To use all four, the manual requires enabling PCIE2 bifurcation and selecting x1x1x1x1. Its documented menu path is Advanced → Chipset Configuration → PCIE2 Bifurcation. This example is not a universal setting or mode for other boards and cards: ASRock Z890 Nova WiFi manual.

Use the symptom to narrow down the cause
| What happens | What to check first |
|---|---|
| Only one drive appears | Check whether the host is splitting lanes, whether the selected slot has the required lane wiring, and whether the card supports the desired drive count on that motherboard and CPU. |
| Some drives appear, but others do not | Check the card manual for socket population order or partial-configuration rules, then verify how many sockets the platform maps. Supported configurations may vary by the number of installed SSDs and the CPU/board combination. |
| The card or all of its drives are missing | Check card seating, slot operation, card compatibility, and UEFI settings. Try another slot only if the motherboard manual permits the configuration. |
| A motherboard M.2 socket disappears after installing the card | Check the motherboard’s resource-sharing table for a disabled or shared M.2 socket, PCIe slot, or SATA port. |
Isolate seating or drive faults
- Power off the PC before removing or reseating the expansion card or SSDs.
- Check seating and support. Confirm each SSD is fully inserted in its socket and secured as the card manufacturer specifies.
- Test one SSD at a time in a known-supported slot or adapter, if available. This can help distinguish a drive fault from a card or host configuration issue.
- Investigate a drive only after isolation. If one SSD remains missing across known-good, compatible connections, the drive may be faulty. A failed-drive test does not change a host lane limit or unsupported card topology.
Update firmware only for a relevant requirement
Follow the motherboard or card manufacturer’s model-specific firmware guidance. For example, ASUS advises updating to the latest BIOS before using RAID-on-CPU on its documented systems: ASUS RAID-on-CPU and drive-configuration guidance. RAID firmware requirements are separate from basic PCIe enumeration; a BIOS update does not make an unsupported lane split or slot configuration compatible.
