The transition wipes local device data and relaxes verified-boot protections, so use this mode only when you need full system access—not simply because you want Linux tools or to test an Android app.
What Chromebook Developer Mode changes
Chromebooks are locked down by default. Developer Mode relaxes verified boot, allowing custom, non-Google-signed images to run, and provides access to a root shell. The Chromium Projects warns that this disables security features and can leave the device more open to attack. It is a boot mode, not a routine Settings option.
Developer Mode is different from ChromeOS’s Dev software channel, the Linux development environment, and Android Debug Bridge (ADB) debugging. Those are separate features with separate requirements.
Before you enable it
- Back up local files. Moving into Developer Mode triggers a Mode Transition Wipe of the device’s stateful partition. The Chromium Projects’ Developer mode documentation says the transition “wipes the stateful partition of the device.” Copy files you need to Google Drive or external storage, then verify that the backup is accessible. Google notes in its factory reset guidance that files on Google Drive or an external hard drive are not deleted by a reset; files stored locally are at risk.
- Check whether you need full Developer Mode. For command-line development, editors, or IDEs, the Linux development environment may be enough on a supported device. For Android app testing, consider ADB debugging instead.
- Check device management. If the Chromebook belongs to a workplace or school, ask its administrator whether the feature is permitted. Management policies may block Developer Mode or other developer features; do not try to bypass those controls.
- Consider the ongoing tradeoff. The Developer Mode warning appears at startup, and changes to the root filesystem may require device recovery.
Enable Developer Mode on a Chromebook with a keyboard
- Shut down the Chromebook.
- Hold Esc + Refresh, then press Power to enter recovery mode. If this combination does not work, check the instructions for your exact model; recovery controls can vary.
- At the recovery screen, press Ctrl + D, then press Enter to accept enabling Developer Mode.
- Wait for the Chromebook to reboot. At the OS verification is OFF screen, press Ctrl + D to boot from the internal drive. The warning returns on each startup while Developer Mode is enabled. The Chromium Projects documents an approximately 30-second timeout for the warning screen, but timing and wording can vary by device.
- Complete ChromeOS setup as prompted.
Enable Developer Mode on a keyboardless tablet or detachable
Detach a detachable keyboard before trying the button-only sequence. Follow the prompts displayed by your device, since firmware menus can differ.

- Hold Power + Volume-Up + Volume-Down for 10 seconds to enter recovery.
- At the firmware menu, press Volume-Up + Volume-Down together, then select Confirm Enabling Developer Mode.
- Use the volume buttons to navigate and Power to confirm selections. Complete the on-screen prompts, then set up ChromeOS when the device restarts.
Choose the right feature for your task
| Feature | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Developer Mode | Full system modification, custom images, or root-shell access | Changes verified-boot protections. Entering or leaving it wipes the stateful partition. |
| Linux development environment | Using command-line tools, editors, and IDEs | Available only on supported devices and may be restricted on work or school Chromebooks. Google’s Linux setup guidance covers the feature. |
| ADB debugging | Testing Android apps on a Chromebook | Separate from Developer Mode and subject to device or administrator restrictions. Google says turning ADB debugging off causes a Powerwash; see its ADB debugging instructions before changing the setting. |
| Dev software channel | Trying an experimental ChromeOS release channel | Not Developer Mode. Switching channels can erase data in some transitions; follow Google’s channel-switching guidance. |
Return to normal mode
Disabling Developer Mode restores OS verification, but it also triggers a Mode Transition Wipe. Back up any local files you created or changed while in Developer Mode before returning.
- On a Chromebook with a keyboard, restart and press Spacebar at the firmware warning screen. Confirm the prompt to enable OS verification.
- On a keyboardless tablet, use Volume-Up and Volume-Down to select Enable OS Verification, then press Power to confirm.
- Allow the Chromebook to reset and complete setup again. If you modified the root filesystem, you may need to recover the device.
If the standard key or button sequence does not match your device, stop and consult the model-specific firmware instructions rather than guessing at recovery-menu choices.
