To diversify beyond Nasdaq-heavy stocks, first check what you already own across all your accounts, then broaden exposure across companies, sectors, regions and—if it suits your goals—asset classes. Adding another fund is not enough: several funds can hold the same largest companies. The right mix depends on your time horizon, risk tolerance, goals, account type and tax situation.
Why Nasdaq-heavy holdings can leave a portfolio concentrated
“Nasdaq” can refer to different things, including the Nasdaq Composite, the Nasdaq-100 or a fund tracking one of those indexes. The Nasdaq-100 is not the whole U.S. stock market: Nasdaq describes it as an index of 100 large Nasdaq-listed nonfinancial companies.
A Nasdaq Global Indexes fact sheet dated March 31, 2026, reported that the Nasdaq-100 had 59.77% exposure to technology and 21.15% to consumer discretionary. Its largest securities included Nvidia at 8.69%, Apple at 7.64% and Microsoft at 5.64%. The top-ten list included Alphabet Class A and Class C as separate securities, so it did not represent ten wholly distinct companies. These are historical index weights, not current post-change figures: Nasdaq announced methodology changes effective May 1, 2026.
Those figures describe the index at that date, not necessarily your portfolio. A fund that tracks the index may differ, and other funds you own may share its largest holdings. Check the fund’s current holdings rather than assuming the dated index snapshot tells you exactly what you own today. Nasdaq-100 fact sheet · Nasdaq methodology announcement, March 30, 2026

Start by finding overlap across your accounts
Before buying anything, make an inventory of investments in taxable accounts, retirement plans and any other accounts. For each fund, review its underlying holdings, sector exposure, geography and investment style. Compare those exposures with individual stocks you own directly.
- Look for the same large companies appearing in multiple funds and as individual stock positions.
- Check whether a broad U.S. stock fund already holds many of the companies in your Nasdaq-100 fund.
- Note whether your holdings cluster in a sector, company-size range or region.
- Review the fund’s role, fees, liquidity and account-level tax or transaction consequences before making a change.
The SEC cautions that owning several mutual funds or ETFs does not automatically create diversification, particularly when a fund is narrowly focused. Its guidance recommends checking top holdings rather than relying on the number of funds you own. SEC Investor.gov: Asset Allocation and Diversification

Broaden stock exposure beyond large U.S. growth companies
Equity diversification can mean adding different kinds of stocks, not simply buying more of the same category. Consider how a potential holding changes the portfolio’s actual exposures.
Geography: U.S. and international stocks
International stock funds can add exposure to companies and markets outside the United States. They also bring risks and practical considerations, including currency fluctuations, differences in available company information and potentially higher costs. Check whether an international fund covers developed markets, emerging markets or both; its label alone does not establish its precise exposure. SEC Investor.gov: International Investing

Company size: large and small companies
A small-company stock fund is one possible complement to large-company holdings. It changes the portfolio’s company-size exposure, but it remains a stock investment and is not a substitute for checking the fund’s holdings, risks and role. The SEC’s beginner guide includes small-company funds among possible ways to diversify beyond large-company stocks. SEC Investor.gov: Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing
Sector and investment style: avoid replacing one narrow bet with another
A sector or thematic fund may still concentrate a portfolio, even if its name sounds different from a Nasdaq fund. Review what it owns and how much its largest positions overlap with your existing funds. A high number of securities by itself does not guarantee broad exposure.

Consider bonds or cash if they fit your plan
Diversification can also span asset classes. Stocks, bonds and cash have different risk and return characteristics, but no allocation is right for everyone. The SEC describes bonds as generally less volatile than stocks and as tending to offer more modest returns; cash equivalents may have relatively low investment-loss risk but face inflation risk. These are general descriptions, not guarantees. SEC Investor.gov: beginner guide
Set an allocation in light of when you expect to need the money and how much loss you can tolerate. A longer time horizon may affect how much risk you can take, but it does not remove risk. Consider the whole portfolio, including workplace retirement investments and cash holdings, rather than choosing each account in isolation. SEC Investor.gov: asset allocation

Compare funds by what they add—and what they cost
There is no universally best fund for reducing Nasdaq concentration. Compare choices against the exposure gap you identified, not just their names or security counts.
- Holdings and overlap: Which companies, countries, sectors or bond types does the fund own, and how does that compare with your existing positions?
- Breadth and concentration: How much weight sits in the largest holdings? A large holding count does not necessarily mean the portfolio is broadly diversified.
- Costs: Check the fund’s expenses as well as brokerage charges and bid-ask spreads. Fees and transaction costs reduce the assets available to earn returns. SEC Investor.gov: Investment Products
- Liquidity and account fit: Understand how readily you can sell and whether buying or selling in a particular account could have tax or transaction consequences.
- Role and risk: Be clear about why an investment belongs in the portfolio and what risks it brings. Higher return potential generally comes with a higher chance of loss.
Choose a target allocation and rebalance deliberately
After deciding what exposures you want, set a target allocation that reflects your goals, time horizon and tolerance for losses. Rebalancing restores that intended mix when market movements cause holdings to drift. You can use a schedule or set thresholds that trigger a review; the SEC notes that rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently.
One approach is to direct new contributions toward underweight areas instead of selling existing investments. Selling can have tax and transaction-cost consequences, so consider the account and tax treatment before acting. Rebalancing is a way to manage allocation, not a method for guaranteeing returns. SEC Investor.gov: Asset Allocation and Diversification · SEC Investor.gov: beginner guide
What diversification can—and cannot—do
Spreading exposure can reduce dependence on a few companies or one part of the market. It cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses, especially when broad markets decline together. Treat diversification as a way to manage concentration and portfolio risk, not as protection against every market loss. SEC Investor.gov: Diversify Your Investments
