Mineral exploration milestones can move a junior miner’s share price when they change investors’ view of the size, confidence, or development risk of a project. The impact depends less on the milestone’s label than on how much genuinely new information it provides, how significant that information is, and what investors already expected.
Why exploration milestones can affect a stock price
Junior miners often have limited operating history and may not yet produce revenue from a mine. Investors therefore assess them partly on what exploration and technical work suggest about a project’s potential and the uncertainty still to be resolved. A new result can change those assessments—and, in turn, the price investors are willing to pay for the shares.
Milestones provide different kinds of information. A drill assay reports results from sampled intervals. A resource update can use accumulated drilling data to revise the estimated scale or confidence of a deposit. Metallurgical tests and engineering studies address processing and design questions, while pre-feasibility and feasibility work bring technical inputs together into more developed project assessments. Each may matter, but none guarantees a share-price rise.
What the market evidence says—and what it does not
A 2013 event study of Australian JORC-compliant exploration, resource, and reserve announcements reported significantly positive market reactions to exploration and resource announcements. The study’s summary suggests reserve announcements may have had less information value because some of the information was already anticipated. This is evidence about the study’s Australian sample, not a rule for every exchange, commodity, or market period.

The study also reported larger abnormal returns for smaller firms, announcements with positive adjectives in their headlines, and announcements implying larger percentage increases in resource levels. These are associations within that sample; they do not show that upbeat wording causes a return or provide a reliable way to pick a winning stock. The summaries available for the study do not establish numerical effect sizes, so there is no defensible standard percentage move to apply to a particular announcement.
An event-study result describes how a group of shares behaved around announcements under the study’s methods. It cannot predict how one company’s shares will react now. A share may rise, fall, or barely move depending on the announcement and the expectations already reflected in its price.

How common milestones differ

These distinctions help explain why an assay headline and a completed study are not interchangeable. Assays may contribute data to a later resource estimate; resource and technical work can then feed into project assessments. The steps may overlap, and a later milestone can be less surprising if earlier announcements have already set expectations.
How drilling and technical work can overlap
Company announcements illustrate the sequencing of work, but they are issuer communications—not independent confirmation of project outcomes or evidence of stock-price effects.

Dakota Gold’s Richmond Hill work
In a September 28, 2026 release, Dakota Gold said it had completed process and site-layout trade-off studies for Richmond Hill’s pre-feasibility study and received additional assays for a resource update. The company described these as related but distinct workstreams. Its CEO, President and Director, Jack Henris, said: “Receipt of the final Richmond Hill assays is an important milestone as we complete the dataset for our upcoming PFS resource update expected to be released in conjunction with our PFS in the fourth quarter of this year.” That is an executive’s statement about the company’s schedule, not independent analysis of the project or its shares.
In a July 6, 2026 release, Dakota Gold said 2025 and 2026 drilling results were being incorporated into a pre-feasibility study to support an updated resource estimate, geo-metallurgical model, and mine plan. This illustrates how assay data can contribute to several subsequent technical outputs; the release does not establish what market reaction those outputs caused.

Selkirk Copper’s Phase 2 work
In a July 8, 2026 release, Selkirk Copper paired initial Phase 2 drill results with technical data collection intended to support a planned feasibility study. Drilling and study preparation can therefore proceed in parallel rather than as strictly separate stages. The company’s announcement describes its work and intention; it does not independently verify future completion or establish a share-price response.

- Is the information genuinely new? Compare the release with prior company guidance and announcements. If the result was expected, the market may already have incorporated it.
- Does it change the resource picture? Look for evidence relevant to scale or confidence, and distinguish that from emphasis on one exceptional drill interval. The Australian study reported an association between larger implied percentage resource increases and larger abnormal returns in its sample; it did not establish a dependable formula.
- Which uncertainty does the work address? Identify whether the milestone speaks to continuity, processing, mine design, or another technical question. A completed test or study is meaningful only in relation to the project question it answers.
- What had investors been told to expect? Compare the announcement with previously stated targets and timing. The difference between an outcome and expectations may matter as much as the milestone category.
- What kind of source is making the claim? Separate an issuer’s description of its work or plans from a technical report or independent market study. A company release can establish what the company announced, but not independently validate future completion or stock-market impact.
Why there is no universal percentage reaction
The cited market evidence is a historical study of Australian announcements, and its reported results are qualitative in the summaries available here. It does not establish a milestone-by-milestone return estimate for an individual junior miner. Reactions can differ with the announcement’s novelty and substance, prior expectations, company size, and broader market conditions; a historical association cannot remove those uncertainties.
For a reader tracking a particular stock, the useful question is not simply whether the company has reached a milestone. It is what new information the milestone supplies, which project uncertainty it addresses, and whether that changes the case investors had already been given.
