For most Chromebook owners, the right way to install Linux apps is ChromeOS’s built-in Linux development environment, not Developer Mode. It provides a Debian environment with APT for compatible Linux tools and apps. You can enable it in Settings, if your Chromebook supports it and your administrator allows it. Google’s setup guide says setup can take 10 minutes or more.
Developer Mode vs. Linux development environment
These names refer to different things. The Linux development environment is a ChromeOS feature for running Linux command-line tools and compatible apps. Developer Mode is associated with device-level debugging capabilities. Google documents the Linux environment’s setup in ChromeOS Settings; its separate debugging instructions describe capabilities such as removing root filesystem verification and enabling USB boot. Google’s current instructions do not say that Developer Mode is required for ordinary Linux-app installation.
| Question | Linux development environment | Developer Mode/debugging features |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Run Linux tools and compatible apps in a Debian environment. | Device-level debugging and testing capabilities. |
| Where to start | ChromeOS Settings > About ChromeOS > Developers > Linux development environment. | A separate debugging-features flow; consult current Google instructions for the exact Chromebook. |
| System impact | Linux apps share a sandbox with one another; Google says a harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps, but not the rest of the Chromebook. | Can change device-level debugging settings, including root filesystem verification and USB boot. |
| Turning it off | Google documents removing Linux in Settings. | Google says disabling debugging requires recovery. |
| Best fit | Installing compatible Linux apps and command-line tools. | Device debugging when that is specifically the task—not ordinary Linux-app setup. |
For most app-installation needs, choose the Linux development environment. Do not follow a device-debugging tutorial just because it describes a way to enable Linux.
Check whether your Chromebook can use Linux
In Settings, look for the Linux development environment option under About ChromeOS > Developers. If it is missing or unavailable, check Google’s supported-device information. A work- or school-managed Chromebook may have Linux blocked by its administrator; ask the administrator if the setting is unavailable or restricted. Developer Mode is not an established workaround for those limits.

Turn on the Linux development environment
- Open Settings.
- Go to About ChromeOS > Developers.
- Next to Linux development environment, select Set up.
- Follow the prompts to finish creating the environment. Google says setup can take 10 minutes or more.
When setup finishes, open the Terminal app to use the Debian environment. It includes APT, the package manager commonly used to install software in Debian. Follow the app developer’s instructions for the correct package and installation method; having Linux enabled does not guarantee that every Linux desktop application will run on a Chromebook.
Check app compatibility and security boundaries
Before installing an app, confirm that it supports the Debian environment and your Chromebook’s hardware. Google lists cameras, Android emulators, and hardware acceleration—including GPU and video decode—as unsupported in its documented Linux environment. Those limitations may rule out apps or workflows that depend on them; check Google’s current compatibility information, as support can change.

Linux apps share a sandbox with one another. Google Chromebook Help explains: “To protect your computer, your Chromebook typically runs each app in a ‘sandbox.’” It also notes that a harmful Linux app can affect other Linux apps, but not the rest of the Chromebook. Files and permissions you share with Linux are available to all Linux apps, so share only the files they need.
Keep Android apps separate from Linux apps
Android apps are installed through Google Play on supported Chromebooks. That is a different route from using the Debian environment, and some apps or devices may not be compatible. A work- or school administrator may also restrict Play Store access. Check which platform your app is built for before following installation instructions.

Back up Linux files before removing or moving the environment
ChromeOS includes a backup and restore flow for Linux files and apps. Use it before removing the environment or migrating to another Chromebook. Google notes that restoring a backup to a different Chromebook requires matching processor architecture, such as x86 or ARM. See Google’s Linux setup and backup guidance for the current steps.
