Kauri dieback is a disease associated with the soil-borne pathogen Phytophthora agathidicida (PA). The pathogen infects kauri through their roots and damages the tissues that carry water and nutrients, causing decline and sometimes death. At forest scale, the loss of kauri can affect the canopy and the shelter and food these trees provide to other species. There is no known cure, so preventing infected soil from moving is central to reducing spread.
What is kauri dieback?
Kauri dieback is the disease caused by infection with PA, a pathogen that lives in soil. It enters kauri through their roots and damages the tissues that transport water and nutrients between roots and leaves. The tree may become less able to sustain its crown, decline, and eventually die. Kauri of any age can be affected, and visible symptoms may not appear early.
The New Zealand Department of Conservation (DOC) says there is no known cure. Its guidance is to reduce spread by avoiding soil movement around kauri roots: DOC’s kauri disease overview.
How does kauri dieback affect forest health?
Effects on an individual tree
Root damage interferes with the movement of water and nutrients through the tree. As the crown becomes less healthy, leaves may yellow, the canopy may thin, and branches may die. Infection can ultimately kill the tree, although the available guidance does not establish a fixed timetable or say that every infected kauri dies.

Effects across a forest
Kauri are characteristic canopy trees in indigenous forests of New Zealand’s upper North Island. DOC notes that they provide shelter and nourishment for other species. When kauri decline or die, the forest loses some of that canopy and the ecological relationships associated with it.
Official sources cited here do not provide a current, range-wide percentage of kauri forests affected or lost to the disease. A location-specific status update should not be read as a national prevalence figure.

What are the symptoms of kauri dieback?
Signs that may be associated with kauri dieback include:
- Bleeding gum or lesions on the lower trunk
- Yellowing leaves
- A thinning canopy
- Dead branches
- Tree death
These signs are reasons to report a sick-looking kauri, not a way to diagnose PA. Some infected trees do not show familiar symptoms, and not every trunk lesion is caused by the pathogen. Tiakina Kauri’s symptom guidance explains both limitations.

How does kauri dieback spread?
The main movement risk described by official sources is infected soil. It can be carried on footwear, clothing and other gear, vehicles, and animals. MPI includes wild pigs, livestock, and pets among the animals that can move infected soil. The risk is not limited to people who enter a forest deliberately: soil can travel wherever contaminated material is carried.
Cleaning and track guidance reduce opportunities to move soil; they cannot guarantee that a visit is free of pathogen risk.

How can visitors help reduce spread?
- Check current access rules before setting out. Consult official alerts and the rules for the specific forest or track. Closures and controlled-area requirements can change.
- Use cleaning stations where provided. Follow the station’s signs and directions rather than assuming one cleaning method applies everywhere.
- Clean footwear and gear. Remove soil before moving between kauri areas, and follow any local instructions for clothing or equipment.
- Stay on marked tracks. Avoid walking over kauri roots or moving soil around them.
- Follow local signs and restrictions. Some areas have stricter access conditions, including track closures or controlled-area rules.
These steps reflect DOC visitor guidance and MPI’s kauri dieback information. The National PA Pest Management Plan came into effect on 2 August 2022. MPI’s current page describes ten rules for people who visit areas with kauri, cultivate kauri, or have kauri on their land. It also lists controlled-area notices for certain tracks in the Waitākere Ranges, parts of the Hūnua Ranges, and Goldie Bush Scenic Reserve; check that page and local alerts for the rules in force for your destination.

DOC’s overview identifies detections in Northland, Great Barrier Island, and the Coromandel Peninsula. Distribution information changes as new information is supplied by programme partners, so use the Tiakina Kauri distribution information and current official alerts rather than relying on an undated summary.

On 4 June 2026, DOC reported that Kaimai Mamaku Conservation Park was free of PA. DOC described it as the second forest with that status, after the Hūnua Ranges received the same status in 2025. These are dated, place-specific reports; they do not establish that all nearby or surrounding forests are free of the pathogen. See DOC’s 4 June 2026 update.
What should you do if a kauri looks sick?
Report concerning symptoms rather than attempting to diagnose or treat the tree yourself. For a tree on public conservation land, DOC directs people to report suspected symptoms to DOC. Tiakina Kauri also provides information on reporting a sick-looking kauri. Use the appropriate route for the land and location. The symptoms alone cannot confirm PA infection, and the cited guidance does not recommend a visitor-applied chemical treatment.
