Start with your badge or ticket, phone, a small day bag, a power bank and cable, and comfortable shoes. Add water, snacks, or devices only after checking the event’s current rules—food, bag searches, cosplay props, and badge pickup requirements vary by show and venue.
Core gaming convention packing checklist
- Badge or ticket: Confirm that you have the event badge or a valid ticket and know whether it must be picked up on site. Bring any confirmation email, receipt number, or photo ID the organizer requires.
- Phone: Keep it charged and download the official convention app if one is available. Organizers may use it for schedules, maps, exhibitor details, and updates.
- Small day bag: Choose a bag that fits what you need without becoming a burden, and check the show’s size and search rules before you go.
- Power bank and charging cable: Make sure the power bank and cable work with your phone or other devices. Keep the charging backup small enough that you are willing to carry it all day.
- Water: Bring a refillable bottle only if the event and venue allow it.
- Hand sanitiser: A small bottle is useful to have on hand.
- Comfortable shoes: Choose footwear suitable for extended walking. Consider spare socks and a light layer if they will help you stay comfortable.
These essentials reflect organizer guidance, but they are not a substitute for the rules of your particular event. PAX Unplugged calls its badge the key to entry and recommends a bag, water bottle, and portable battery in its official attendee guide. PAX Aus likewise recommends a portable phone charger, water, and hand sanitiser in its 2026 planning information.

Entry documents
Before leaving home, check whether your badge is already in hand or whether you need to collect it at the venue. Requirements can differ by badge type. For example, PAX Aus says attendees collecting certain badges should bring the confirmation email with its receipt number and photo ID. PAX Unplugged says a badge is required for entry. Confirm the instructions for your own show rather than assuming a ticket screenshot or ID alone will be enough.
Schedules and maps
Download the official app when the organizer offers one, and check that you can access it before arriving. PAX describes its app as a source for current event details and maps; PAX Aus lists schedules, exhibitor information, and maps among its app features. App availability and the timing of updates can vary by event, so check the organizer’s current site as well.

Pack for comfort, not just convenience
Comfortable shoes are one of the most useful choices for a convention day with extensive walking. PAX Aus specifically advises attendees that comfortable shoes are critical because they will do a lot of walking. Spare socks and a layer are optional additions, not universal requirements; check the local forecast and any venue-specific guidance before deciding what to carry.
Keep the day bag light enough to manage in crowds and while standing in lines. If you expect to buy merchandise or collect materials, leave room for them instead of packing a full bag from the start.

Optional items: bring them only if you will use them
- Handheld console, e-reader, or tablet: Consider one if you expect downtime and are comfortable carrying and securing it. A power bank may help if the device needs charging.
- Snacks: Pack them only if outside food is allowed by both the event and the venue.
- Reusable water bottle: Useful where permitted; confirm whether the venue allows it and whether any restrictions apply.
- Spare socks or a light layer: Add these if weather, footwear, or venue conditions make them worthwhile.
- Cosplay items: Check the event’s prop and costume rules before bringing anything that could be restricted or need screening.
For optional bags and charging gear, prioritize low carry weight, enough capacity for what you actually need, compatibility with your devices, and compliance with the event’s current rules. These are practical selection criteria, not product rankings.

Food and drink
Do not assume outside food is allowed just because another convention permits it. PAX Unplugged allows outside food, while the Los Angeles Convention Center says outside food is not allowed but a personal water bottle is permitted in its venue FAQ. Check both the event’s policy and the venue’s rules, since they may set different limits.

Bag checks and prohibited items
Look up bag-size limits, entrance screening, and prohibited-item lists before packing. PAX East’s 2026 rules say bags are checked at entrances and describe paid coat and baggage check. That policy applies to that event; it does not establish the rules for other conventions. Review the latest guidance for your own show and venue.
Cosplay props and accessibility
If you are bringing cosplay props, read the show’s prop-weapons policy and find out whether props need inspection or a pass. PAX Aus directs cosplayers to its prop rules and Prop Check. If you need accessibility services or a medical accommodation, check the organizer’s process before arrival so you know what information, documents, or advance arrangements are required.
