To avoid using ink on quality you do not need, match the printer’s paper setting to the paper you loaded and choose the lowest quality level that still produces readable, useful results. Use Draft for rough copies, Normal or Standard for routine documents, and higher quality for photos or detailed graphics. These choices can reduce unnecessary printing effort, but manufacturers do not establish a universal ink-savings percentage.

Choose paper that suits the job

Everyday text: plain paper

For routine letters, forms, and other text documents, start with plain multipurpose paper. HP says plain paper with ColorLok technology works well for everyday text. The relevant goal is compatible, legible output—not choosing paper on the assumption that it will independently reduce ink use. HP’s paper guidance explains the distinction between everyday text and denser print jobs.

Photos and dense graphics: suitable photo paper

Photos and high-contrast graphics put more ink on the page than ordinary text. HP recommends photo paper for dense printing and warns that some papers may not absorb ink well, which can cause smearing. Choose stock compatible with your printer and follow its media guidance; photo-paper labels and supported choices can vary by printer.

Set the driver to match the loaded paper

In the print dialog or printer preferences, find the paper type, media type, or similar setting and select the option that corresponds to the stock in the tray. The wording and location differ among printer models and drivers. A mismatched setting can produce poor results, so do not select a photo-paper option when plain paper is loaded—or the reverse. Epson’s driver documentation notes that available quality choices may depend on the selected paper type. Epson’s print-quality guidance describes these dependencies.

Choose a print-quality level for the task

Job Starting setting When to change it
Rough text or internal review Draft Use when reduced quality is acceptable and the result remains readable. Draft is intended for draft printing, not as the best choice for every job.
Routine text and mixed documents Normal or Standard Use as the practical everyday setting; move higher if small text, images, or other details are not clear enough.
Photos or detail-sensitive graphics A higher quality option, such as High or Best Use when finer detail or appearance matters; pair it with compatible paper.

Names such as Draft, Normal, Standard, High, Best, and Max DPI are not consistent across all drivers. Higher DPI can improve clarity and detail, but may slow printing and might use more ink. HP and Epson describe these tradeoffs qualitatively; they do not provide a universal measured savings figure for switching to Draft. HP’s print instructions and Epson’s quality-setting guidance explain their respective options.

Use a quick test when quality is uncertain

  1. Load the paper intended for the job.
  2. In the print dialog or printer preferences, set the paper or media type to match the loaded stock.
  3. Choose Draft for rough text, Normal or Standard for ordinary work, or a higher setting when detail matters.
  4. Print one representative page and check readability, image detail, and whether ink has smeared.
  5. If the result is not fit for purpose, adjust the quality level or paper type and print again.

This small check helps avoid printing a full document at a setting that is either unnecessarily high or too low for the job.

Grayscale does not always mean color ink is unused

Do not assume a black-and-white or grayscale selection eliminates color-ink use. HP notes that some printer models mix color inks to improve black-and-white output and may use ink for periodic maintenance; behavior depends on the model. Check the documentation for your printer if avoiding color ink is important. HP’s grayscale printing guidance describes this model-specific caveat.
