Keep the camera’s heat-dissipation area clear, check the card before formatting it, and compare battery life only under similar recording conditions. Repeated overheating shutdowns or failures that persist after card and firmware checks warrant DJI Support.
Why an Osmo Pocket 3 gets hot
Some warmth during demanding recording is expected. DJI says the camera’s image sensor, image processing and encoding, battery output, and compact body all contribute to heat. Warmth alone does not establish that the camera is defective; frequent thermal shutdowns are a reason to investigate further.
Reduce heat during recording
- Keep the gimbal and the heat-dissipation area at the top of the camera uncovered. Avoid extended direct sunlight and high ambient temperatures.
- For a long, fixed shot, leave room for air to circulate. Holding the camera below the screen area may be more comfortable and help you avoid covering warmer areas, but it is not a cooling repair.
- If you do not need the highest image quality, lower the resolution, frame rate, or both. These changes reduce processing demands, though they also change the footage you capture.
- Set the screen to turn off sooner while recording. DJI lists “Scrn Off When Rec” options of 3, 15, and 30 seconds and recommends using a shorter screen-on time to help alleviate heat. See DJI’s Osmo Pocket 3 FAQ.
- Avoid recording while charging unless necessary. DJI says the camera draws power directly from the external power input during recording and charges its internal battery after recording stops. This describes power use; it does not guarantee cooler operation or longer runtime.
- If the camera heated up during initial activation, a firmware update, or charging, DJI recommends letting it return to room temperature before use.
A narrowly defined recording limit
DJI says standalone 4K/120 fps recording at 25°C with a compatible card may stop after 18 minutes in Europe or before product activation. This is a specific manufacturer-stated case, not a general recording limit for every region, mode, or camera. See DJI’s overheating guidance.
When heat-related stops need support
DJI advises contacting Support if automatic stops due to overheating happen frequently during short recording sessions. When you contact them, be ready to share photos of the camera, approximate camera and ambient temperatures, whether it was already powered on, the SD card and recording setup, device logs, and when the stops occurred. What to check when recording stops after seconds or minutes
A recording that stops is not automatically an overheating problem. DJI also identifies a full, damaged, erroneous, or incompatible microSD card as a possible cause. Work through these checks in order.
- Check the card. Confirm it is not full or damaged, and compare its model, capacity, and speed class with DJI’s current Osmo Pocket 3 recommended microSD card list. DJI states the camera supports cards up to 1 TB and the exFAT file system. Its overheating guidance also warns that a card outside its compatibility list or with lower speeds can contribute to heat. A U30/A2 marking alone does not guarantee compatibility; use DJI’s list to choose.
- Back up footage before formatting. Formatting erases the card’s contents. After saving any footage you need, format a compatible card through DJI Mimo, following DJI’s recording troubleshooting guidance.
- Test another compatible card, if available. If the camera records reliably on a second card, that helps narrow the issue to the original card or its contents.
- If the camera is hot, let it cool. Power it off, then try a lower resolution or frame rate when you resume recording.
- Check DJI Mimo and camera firmware. Update them using DJI’s official prompts and instructions. The Pocket 3 downloads page lists a User Manual v1.0 dated 2023-10-25 and Release Notes dated 2025-08-26; those listing dates do not tell you which firmware version is installed on your camera.
- Contact DJI Support if the failure remains. Escalate if a compatible card and current firmware do not resolve the recording stops.
A file split is not necessarily an interruption
DJI says the camera automatically splits a recording near 16 GB without damaging quality. If a file ends around that size but recording continues in another file, that is an automatic file split—not the same as the camera stopping the recording.

How to assess battery drain
DJI’s published operating-time figure is 166 minutes, but only under a defined reference test: 25°C/77°F, 1080p/24 fps in 16:9, with Wi-Fi and the screen off. DJI labels the result reference-only in its FAQ. It is not a promise of runtime in other recording modes or conditions, nor a test of an individual battery’s health.
Resolution and frame rate, screen use, wireless functions, temperature, and charging conditions can differ from that test. To make a useful comparison, note your recording mode, screen and Wi-Fi state, surroundings, and approximate runtime. DJI’s general guidance does not provide a symptom-specific procedure that can diagnose abnormal drain in an individual unit. If the drain remains concerning, share those details with DJI Support rather than assuming a battery defect or expecting one setting to fix it.

Charging figures are a different measurement
DJI reports charging to 80% in 16 minutes and to 100% in 32 minutes in a laboratory test using its separately sold 65 W PD charger. Those figures are charging results, not battery-health or operating-time tests; they do not predict how long your camera will record.
Operating and charging temperature ranges
DJI lists an operating temperature range of 0–40°C and a charging temperature range of 5–45°C in its support specifications. These are manufacturer-published ranges, not a guarantee that every recording mode will avoid heat-related stops at every temperature within them.

What to tell DJI Support
For recurring overheating stops, DJI specifically asks for details that help describe the conditions around the failure. For other persistent recording or battery issues, including the relevant card and recording setup makes the problem clearer.
- Photos of the device and approximate device and ambient temperatures.
- Whether the camera was already on before recording, and how long it had been operating.
- The SD card model and capacity, recording resolution and frame rate, and whether the camera was charging.
- Device logs and the timing or frequency of the stops.
- For battery concerns, approximate runtime and screen, Wi-Fi, and recording settings.
Use DJI Support for repeated thermal shutdowns or failures that remain after card and firmware checks.
