How are Genshin Impact characters created? HoYoverse’s developer accounts describe a layered approach: define a character’s identity and place in Teyvat, build the narrative and cultural context around that identity, refine the design with artists, and use animation, regional environments, music, and gameplay to make the world feel connected. Xiao and Liyue offer useful examples, but these accounts are selected case studies—not a complete production manual for every character or region.

Character creation starts with identity and place

In a February 10, 2021 developer insight about Xiao, Zhongyuan of Creative Concept & Writing describes starting with what distinguishes a character and how that person fits into Teyvat. The goal is not simply to create an appealing model; a character should have relationships with the world that make sense across their past, present, and future.

“Characters are not just lumps of rock that we can place anywhere we want in the environment; they are autonomous individuals, each one with a complex set of past, present, and future interactions with the world of Teyvat.”

— Zhongyuan, Creative Concept & Writing, in HoYoverse’s “Developer Insight #4: Character Stories (I) – ‘Vigilant Yaksha’ Xiao”, February 10, 2021.

This principle links personality to setting: a character’s role, history, and connections help determine what visual and narrative choices will feel coherent rather than interchangeable.

How Xiao’s story shaped his design

Cultural references support the character

HoYoverse’s Xiao account discusses design references connected to adepti and yaksha traditions, as well as Xiao’s role as a protector. The developers describe refining cultural background after establishing the character’s fundamentals. These are the team’s stated creative references and adaptations, not a comprehensive or authoritative account of the traditions themselves.

Visual iteration brings narrative context into the design

The account describes an early draft with a gentler appearance and a later green design developed through discussion between writing and art colleagues, informed by Xiao’s backstory. That example shows how a visual direction can change as the team clarifies what a character’s history and role should communicate.

Animation makes character legible in motion

The same developer insight credits colleagues in Concept Art and Animation and discusses motion capture followed by animator refinement. Movement is another means of conveying character: it can carry qualities that a still portrait or costume alone cannot. The account documents Xiao’s development; it does not claim that every character uses an identical process.

Liyue’s landscape introduces its identity

In a May 2, 2020 account of Liyue’s design, the region’s designer describes Teyvat as a living world. Nations need distinct landscapes and customs, but they should also feel connected through their inhabitants and the routes people travel. The approach makes regional identity more than a visual theme: geography and movement help establish how a place belongs to the wider world.

The Stone Gate is a concrete example. The account presents it as a boundary that shapes the player’s first impression of entering Liyue. Terrain and the approach to a region therefore contribute to worldbuilding before a character explains local customs or history. Read the Liyue design account for HoYoverse’s discussion of the region, published May 2, 2020.

Music and gameplay extend world identity

Music gives regions a distinct sound

HOYO-MiX says it coordinated with development, IP, and visual teams to understand Teyvat before setting the musical direction. The account also describes drawing on musical elements from around the world to portray regional variety. Its publication date was not confirmed in the inspected result, so no exact date is assigned here. HoYoverse’s account of the music behind Genshin Impact explains that collaboration between worldbuilding and music helps give places their own sound while preserving a sense of belonging to one setting.

Mechanics can express elemental ideas

A February 14, 2020 developer account about Hypostasis design connects an enemy’s appearance with its gameplay mechanics. The elemental enemy is meant to prompt players to adjust their party and tactics, including choices about elements and weapons. This makes gameplay part of the world’s expression: elemental concepts influence not only how an enemy looks, but also how players respond to it. HoYoverse discusses the example in “Developer Insight – Period 1.”

What these developer accounts do—and do not—show

Together, these examples illustrate how character identity, cultural and narrative context, visual iteration, animation, regional design, music, and mechanics can reinforce one another. They do not establish one complete workflow for every character or nation, quantify production effort, or describe the current full roster. The examples are best read as documented snapshots of particular creative decisions.

HoYoverse’s July 16, 2025 note about Version 5.8 announced one-click quest time skip and character talent demo videos, alongside optimizations involving quests, exploration, and Artifacts. That dated product update concerns player-facing features; it is not evidence about the current version or a complete account of how characters and regions are produced. See the Version 5.8 developers discussion for the announcement.
