Start with your router, then secure each camera’s account and software. Change default passwords, use unique credentials, turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) where available, install updates, and consider moving cameras and other smart devices to a properly isolated guest or IoT network. Exact settings vary by router and camera, so use the manuals and support notices for your models.
1. Secure the router that connects your devices
Your router is a high-value starting point: CISA calls a home wireless router “the primary entrance for cybercriminals to access all of your connected devices” in its 5 Steps to Protecting Your Digital Home. A compromised router can put more than a camera at risk.
- Replace the router’s factory-set administrator username or password if the interface allows it. Do not reuse the password you use for Wi-Fi or other accounts.
- Set a strong, unique Wi-Fi passphrase so nearby people cannot easily join your network.
- Install supported router firmware updates, and enable automatic updates if the router offers them.
Router interfaces differ, so there is no reliable universal menu path. Check the router’s manual or support site for its current instructions. If the router no longer receives updates, check the manufacturer’s support notice and consider replacing it with a supported model.
2. Protect camera accounts and passwords
Use the camera’s official companion app or account site to change any factory-set or initial password. Choose a distinct password for each camera account; reusing a password means a breach at another service could also expose the camera account. A password manager can help you maintain unique credentials.

- Turn on MFA for the camera or cloud account if the vendor offers it.
- Do not share the account password with household members when the app provides separate user access; use its available account-sharing controls instead.
- Follow the model’s manual for changing device-level credentials. Camera menus and account settings are not universal.
3. Keep camera, router, and app software current
Install available firmware updates for cameras and routers, and update their companion apps from trusted sources. Enable automatic updates when available. CISA recommends keeping software current in its consumer home-security guidance; its IoT risk and mitigation guidance also addresses device vulnerabilities and maintenance.
Check the manufacturer’s support page or notices for your exact model to see whether security updates are still provided. If a device has reached end of support, do not assume new patches will arrive: review the vendor’s notice and consider replacing the device, especially if it remains connected to your network.

4. Should cameras and smart devices use a separate network?
Often, yes—if your router can isolate the devices effectively. Putting cameras and other IoT equipment on a guest Wi-Fi network or a dedicated IoT network can limit how readily they communicate with computers and other devices on your main network. CISA describes guest Wi-Fi as one possible simple way to divide home devices into groups in its network segmentation guidance.
“Guest network” does not guarantee a particular level of isolation. Router behavior varies, and some guest networks block access to other devices while others may not provide the separation you expect. Check your router’s documentation for what devices can reach, including one another and devices on the main network.

After moving a camera, test the features you rely on—such as app access, hub connectivity, and local recording—using the router and camera instructions. Do not weaken the separation without understanding why a feature needs access. The right configuration depends on the router, camera, and recording setup.
5. Review app permissions and internet exposure
Install companion apps from the camera vendor or a trusted app store, and review their permissions in your phone’s settings. Remove permissions the app does not need for the features you use; the available permissions and their effects vary by app and operating system.

Avoid exposing router or camera administrative interfaces directly to the public internet. Remote-access settings differ by model, so consult the camera and router manuals before changing them. The general security guidance supports reviewing permissions and limiting exposure, but it does not establish universal camera settings for remote access, encryption, cloud retention, or local recording.

- List each camera and smart device, its vendor and model, and the app or account used to manage it.
- Note where to find the vendor’s firmware updates and support or end-of-life notices.
- Remove devices you no longer need from the network, and close or remove unused accounts where the vendor permits it.
- Periodically check the inventory and update status as you add, remove, or replace devices.
