This guide explains that loop, the structured conversation format, and the safety checks needed before connecting a model to APIs or real-world actions.
What function calling means in Gemma 4
Function calling lets an application offer a model a bounded set of operations—such as looking up weather—and receive a structured request to use one. Google’s Gemma 4 function-calling guide states: “A Gemma model cannot execute code on its own.” The application remains responsible for interpreting the request and deciding whether and how to act.
For example, a user might ask, “What’s the temperature in London?” The model can request a declared weather function with a location argument. Your application—not Gemma—calls the weather service, then returns the result for the model to explain to the user.
That distinction is the core safety boundary: a model-generated tool call is a request, not proof of permission and not executable code.

How the tool-calling loop works
- Declare tools: Provide a small set of named functions, descriptions, and parameter definitions.
- Ask the model: Send the user’s message and tool declarations through the chosen integration.
- Inspect the response: Determine whether the model returned a structured function call, and read its name and arguments.
- Validate and execute: Check the request against an explicit allowlist and your application’s rules; run only the mapped implementation.
- Return the tool result: Add the call and its response to conversation history in the expected format.
- Continue generation: Send the updated history to the model so it can produce a user-facing answer based on the returned result.
Some turns may contain more than one independent call. Google’s tutorial shows corresponding tool responses grouped in a list. Each response still needs to match its requested tool and be represented in the format expected by the library or API you are using.
Define a small, explicit tool surface
Expose only the operations your application is prepared to support. A declaration should give each tool a stable name, explain what it does, and specify its parameters—including types, required fields, and constraints where the integration supports them.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
The documented Transformers workflow allows declarations to be provided as JSON schema. It also shows Python functions with type hints, arguments, and docstrings as a way for its tooling to generate a schema. Either way, keep the declaration aligned with the actual implementation: a schema is useful only if the application enforces it.
For a weather lookup, a deliberately narrow interface might accept a location string. Avoid offering a broad “run command” or “call any URL” function when a focused weather operation will do. Narrow interfaces make it easier to validate inputs, limit permissions, and reason about side effects.

Transformers workflow
In Google’s documented Hugging Face Transformers path, the processor’s chat-template method receives the conversation and a tools argument; the rendered prompt is then tokenized and passed to generation. The model response must be interpreted as structured output, not treated as a string of trusted instructions.
The guide’s example uses a regular-expression parser to extract a call. That is an illustration for the example, not a general production parser. Prefer the structured representation provided by the integration where available; validate that parsing succeeded and handle a missing or malformed call without attempting execution.

- Render the conversation with the tool declarations using the processor’s chat-template method.
- Tokenize the rendered prompt and generate a response with the model runtime you selected.
- Parse the returned structured call, if any; verify the function name against a fixed mapping and validate every argument.
- Run only the approved function implementation, capture its result or error, and append the assistant call and matching tool response to the conversation.
- Render and generate again with the updated history to obtain the model’s user-facing response.
Google’s surfaced Transformers tutorial specifies transformers>=5.10.1, but package versions and model/runtime support change. Check the current official tutorial and the compatibility of the environment you intend to deploy in rather than treating that surfaced version as a timeless requirement.
Google Gen AI SDK/API workflow
Google also documents a distinct route using the Google Gen AI SDK: define a function declaration, attach it as a tool in the generation configuration, make the model request, and inspect returned function-call objects for the function name and arguments. Your application then performs the operation and continues the interaction with its result. The SDK’s function-call object is still a request to your application; it does not mean Gemma has executed the external function.

Choose the integration that fits your application
| Path | Integration surface | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hugging Face Transformers | Processor chat template with tool declarations, followed by tokenization and model generation. | A local, notebook, or application workflow already built around Transformers. | Current package version, model identifier, and runtime support for the intended deployment. |
| Google Gen AI SDK/API | Function declarations attached to a generation request; inspect returned function-call objects. | An application using Google’s SDK/API request workflow. | Current API and model availability for the deployment environment. |
The documented examples establish these different integration surfaces, not a universal winner. They do not establish comparative latency, price, or output quality; choose based on your stack and verify current runtime availability.
Preserve Gemma’s structured tool history
Gemma 4’s prompt-format documentation defines paired control tokens for tool declarations (<|tool> and <tool|>), tool calls (<|tool_call> and <tool_call|>), and tool responses (<|tool_response> and <tool_response|>). It also identifies <|"|> as a delimiter for string values in structured blocks.
These markers describe the structure of the conversation; they are not a substitute for validating the request. Keep tool calls and responses in the structured history expected by your selected library or API. Hand-building token strings can easily create malformed history, so use the integration’s supported representation unless your implementation specifically requires constructing the format yourself.
Put safety checks before execution
- Use an allowlist: Map each declared tool name to a known implementation. Never use model-selected names to invoke arbitrary functions, and do not execute generated code. Google’s tutorial specifically warns that dynamic dispatch through Python’s
globals()can be dangerous. - Validate arguments: Check types, required values, ranges, and application-specific constraints before calling a tool. A declared schema does not replace server-side validation.
- Enforce authorization: Apply the user’s permissions and the application’s policy independently of what the model requests.
- Gate consequential actions: Sending messages, making purchases, booking services, or changing devices may require explicit user confirmation. The model’s output alone is not authorization.
- Limit what each tool can do: Give implementations only the credentials and access needed for their defined task.
Handle calls that do not follow the happy path
A robust application needs a defined outcome for cases beyond a successful lookup. The tutorial demonstrates a happy path rather than a full production error policy, so these behaviors are application responsibilities:
Quick Recap
- No tool call: Continue with an ordinary model response if appropriate; do not assume every user request requires a function.
- Unknown function or malformed arguments: Reject the call without dispatching it. Return a controlled error or ask the model to clarify, depending on the situation.
- Unauthorized request: Do not execute it. Explain the limitation or request the required user approval.
- Tool failure or timeout: Record the failure and return a bounded error result; do not present an unavailable result as fact.
- Unclear tool output: Have the model clarify or summarize only what the tool actually returned, and ask the user for missing information when needed.
