It is a delivery and positioning aid—not a way to control the implant therapeutically after it is in the brain. The EU-funded project developed the concept and reported engineering and animal-model work, but the available project sources do not establish a proven human treatment, regulatory authorization, or commercial availability.
What is MINIGRAPH?
MINIGRAPH—short for “Minimally Invasive Neuromodulation Implant and implantation procedure based on ground-breaking GRAPHene technology for treating brain disorders”—was a European Innovation Council Pathfinder research project coordinated by the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2). The European Commission’s CORDIS project record lists its dates as 1 October 2022 to 30 June 2026 and an EU contribution of €4,428,402.50.
The project aimed to combine graphene-based neural interfaces, integrated electronics, closed-loop neuromodulation, and a robot-assisted, minimally invasive implantation approach. Parkinson’s disease and other neurological or neuropsychiatric disorders were potential future application areas, not conditions for which the project demonstrated a treatment benefit.
How does the magnetic steering concept work?
ICN2 describes a magnetic carrier—a magnet used to steer the implant from outside the body—as part of a robotic implantation procedure. In this concept, the robot supports the delivery process and the magnetic carrier helps guide the implant toward its intended position. The magnet’s described role is during implantation; the sources do not say it steers or controls the implant after surgery.

- 【2 Times Human Brain Anatomical Model】: The human brain model anatomy can be divided into 4 parts, the anterior lobe and brainstem are detachable, which shows the motor center, sensory center and functional center clearly.
- 【Healty Material Quality】: The Skull Models Made of green PVC plastic material. Durable, wa , Easy to clean.Due to closed space shippment, there may be some smell, but smell will fade away after putting in open air.
- 【Colored Design】: The realistic simulation human brain model is displaying and labels the functional areas of the brain with different colors accurately, which is more intuitive than books and diagrams. It is more convenient to observe the brain's internal structure and learn the human brain's knowledge.
- 【Wide Application】: Our realistic anatomy brain model can as an ideal study tool for medical anatomy teachers or students, and children's interest development learning tool, which can be used in teaching explanation, doctor-patient communication, model display, learning research or laboratory exhibition.
The concept is designed around a small skull incision and high-precision placement. It should not be confused with magnetic brain stimulation: the reported magnet is for implant delivery, while the intended neural interface and electronics provide the recording and stimulation functions. ICN2’s description is available in its project announcement.
What did the project report developing?
The European Commission’s CORDIS periodic report covers work from 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023. It documents early engineering and animal-model development, not clinical outcomes.

- 2. 360° Rotating Base: The model features a 360° rotating base, allowing for easy viewing and detailed examination of the human head and brain anatomy from all angles.
- 3. Educational and Aesthetic Value: This 2D brain model combines educational value with aesthetic appeal, making it an excellent choice for medical offices, classrooms, and as a unique desk ornament.
- 4. Detailed Anatomical Representation: The model accurately depicts the human head nerve anatomy, providing a clear and informative representation that is both visually appealing and informative.
- 5. Ideal for Medical Professionals: Perfect for doctors, nurses, medical students, and therapists, this anatomical stand serves as a functional and decorative piece, enhancing the professional environment.
- Neural probes: first-generation graphene neural probes were reported.
- Electronics design: a designed and simulated application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) had 16 independent stimulation channels and 240 recording channels.
- Implantation concept: the team reported an initial concept for the robotic system and magnetic carrier.
- Animal-model work: an acute porcine model was used for synchronized recording, closed-loop stimulation, and behavioral metrics. The report also says a real-time closed-loop dataflow incorporating machine-learning models was demonstrated in that model.
These results show technical development and testing in an acute animal model. They do not show that the device is safe or effective in people.
How thin is the implant, and what is it made of?
A Fraunhofer IZM account dated 30 September 2026 describes the implant as 100 micrometers thick overall. It reports that the thinned ASIC and 17 capacitors together measure 70 micrometers. The account also describes graphene electrodes, a nanopore-gold layer, and packaging made with biocompatible parylene and aluminum oxide. Project partners designed a robot-supported implantation process. These are reported engineering specifications, not evidence of clinical readiness; see Fraunhofer IZM’s account.

Is MINIGRAPH’s implant available or proven in patients?
The available sources do not establish human clinical results, regulatory authorization, or commercial availability. CORDIS’s reporting describes acute porcine-model work, while Fraunhofer and the project’s results page describe project outputs and future translation. The results page frames the work as contributing foundations and pathways for future clinical adoption. That is different from having a validated treatment or an approved product.
Accordingly, MINIGRAPH should be understood as a completed EU-funded research and development project, not a consumer device or currently established clinical option. Its stated disease applications remain potential future uses.

What the project does—and does not—show
- It reports: graphene-probe development, electronics design, an implantation-system concept, and acute animal-model work.
- It does not establish: that the magnetic carrier controls an implant after placement, that the system improves patient outcomes, or that a treatment has been authorized or is for sale.
- Its next significance: the project’s engineering work may inform future development, but clinical adoption would require evidence and regulatory steps not reported in the cited project accounts.
