NASA’s Curiosity rover successfully drilled the rock nicknamed Campo Marte, collected powder, and delivered a portion to its CheMin instrument. NASA’s May 28, 2026 update says the team planned further analysis with the rover’s SAM laboratory, but it does not report Campo Marte’s final composition. The sample’s contents—and what they might mean—remain to be determined.
What happened at Campo Marte?
Curiosity drilled Campo Marte after an earlier attempt at a different target, the Atacama block, resulted in the rover lifting the rock with its drill. The team reviewed telemetry and images, assessed what had happened, and decided it was reasonable to try another target in the area. Campo Marte was chosen for its geological features and because it was significantly larger than Atacama.
This time, the rover withdrew its drill and collected sample powder. The team dropped small portions as a routine check after drilling. NASA’s May 28, 2026 update says one portion went to CheMin; initial CheMin results helped the team plan work with SAM. The team planned four portions for SAM and thought the sample might be nearly depleted afterward, though it was uncertain how much remained and scheduled another portion-drop test.
NASA reported a drilling depth of 28 millimeters (about 1.1 inches), compared with the team’s usual depth of 35 millimeters (about 1.38 inches). NASA says a pinch of no more than tens of milligrams can provide detailed compositional information. How will Curiosity analyze the rock powder?
The rover’s drill turns rock into powder that can be delivered to onboard instruments. CheMin and SAM examine different aspects of the material: CheMin focuses on minerals, while SAM investigates chemical compounds and gases released from the sample.
CheMin: identifying minerals
CheMin is short for Chemistry and Mineralogy. Its results help characterize the minerals in a rock, providing clues about how it formed and what conditions it experienced. For Campo Marte, NASA says CheMin’s early results informed how the team planned the subsequent SAM analysis.

SAM: examining gases and organic chemistry
SAM means Sample Analysis at Mars. It heats portions of a sample to release gases for analysis and can carry out selected wet-chemistry experiments. NASA Goddard describes sample powder being placed in SAM cups and heated in an oven to about 1,000°C (1,832°F). Gas chromatography separates molecules, and a quadrupole mass spectrometer helps identify them. These details describe SAM’s capabilities, not findings from Campo Marte. What do scientists hope to learn?
The analyses can help establish Campo Marte’s mineral and chemical composition. Combined with the rock’s geological setting, those findings may help scientists understand how the area formed and what ancient conditions in Gale crater were like. Curiosity’s broader investigation of Gale crater includes questions about past environments and habitability.

The interpretation depends on more than detecting a particular molecule. Scientists consider the rock’s context, how well its materials may have been preserved, relevant isotope patterns, and whether nonbiological processes could explain the observations. A chemical clue can narrow possibilities without settling how it originated.
Would organic molecules prove life existed on Mars?
No. An organic molecule contains carbon, but organic compounds can form through nonbiological processes as well as through life. Detecting one would be a chemical finding, not proof that organisms produced it. NASA has emphasized that interpreting possible signs of life requires more evidence and consideration of competing explanations.

Curiosity has previously detected organic molecules in a different sample, Mary Anning 3. NASA reported 21 carbon-containing molecules in that sample, including seven detected on Mars for the first time. Those results demonstrate what Curiosity’s instruments can investigate; they are not Campo Marte results and do not predict what this new sample will show. NASA’s report on the Mary Anning 3 sample
Earlier work on a carbon-isotope signal from Mars also illustrates why interpretation is difficult. NASA described multiple possible explanations, and the signal alone did not establish life. What is known—and what is still unknown
- Known: Curiosity drilled Campo Marte, collected powder, and delivered a portion to CheMin.
- Planned: NASA described a plan to send four portions for SAM analysis, while noting uncertainty about how much sample would remain.
- Not yet reported in NASA’s May 28, 2026 update: Campo Marte’s final mineral or chemical composition, any organic detections, or an astrobiological interpretation.
So far, the milestone is a successful sample collection and the start of onboard analysis—not a discovery about what the rock contains. NASA Science, May 28, 2026
