Give each family member a separate account, keep personal logins private, and share only selected credentials through a family vault or collection. Then configure recovery while everyone can still sign in: appoint a backup organizer or trusted contact, preserve recovery materials securely, and make sure the process does not depend on one person.
Set sharing boundaries before moving passwords
A family plan should not mean that every relative can see every password. Keep each person’s private logins in their own vault, and create a shared space only for credentials the household genuinely needs—for example, a shared utility account or a common streaming login. Use restricted vaults or collections for items needed by only some people.
This distinction matters because access follows the shared space: 1Password says everyone with access to a vault can access the items in it, while Bitwarden lets administrators assign collections so members can see only what they need. See 1Password family sharing and Bitwarden organization collections.
Before importing or moving credentials, decide who belongs in each space. Keep personal email, social media, banking, and identity credentials private unless there is a specific reason to share them. For high-impact records, verify membership and permissions before placing them in shared storage.

Set up individual accounts and test them
- Choose a plan and designate a primary and backup. Check the provider’s current plan features and eligibility before signing up; entitlements can change. Choose a backup organizer or contact who is trusted and able to follow the recovery instructions.
- Invite each family member to create their own account. Do not pass around one master password. In 1Password Families, each invited member creates an account password and receives a Secret Key and Emergency Kit, as well as a Private vault. Details are in 1Password’s family onboarding guide.
- Install the apps each person will use and test sign-in. Confirm that members can access their own accounts on their own devices before moving important credentials.
- Create shared spaces and assign access deliberately. Start with a small household-wide vault or collection for genuinely common credentials. Add separate restricted spaces where useful, such as for a couple or a caregiver. Confirm who can access each space before moving items into it.
- Move only selected items. Keep the rest in each person’s private storage. Recheck shared-space membership when household needs change.
Choose a recovery model that fits your family
Account recovery and emergency access solve related but different problems. Recovery helps a member regain their own account; emergency access lets a designated contact request access under rules configured in advance. Do not assume either mechanism automatically grants access to every organization-owned or shared-vault item. Verify the provider’s current behavior for the plan and account roles you use.
| Decision | 1Password Families | Bitwarden Emergency Access |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary sharing | Each member has a Private vault; families can use a shared vault and additional vaults for selected people. See 1Password family sharing and family onboarding. | Organization collections can be assigned so members access only the items they need. See Bitwarden organization collections. |
| Recovery or emergency access | A family organizer can recover a member, but cannot recover their own account. Appoint another organizer and preserve recovery materials. See 1Password account recovery. | A designated trusted contact can request access after setup, subject to the configured wait time and permission mode. See Bitwarden Emergency Access. |
| Permission choice | The reviewed guidance covers organizer recovery and vault permissions; it is not the same as Bitwarden’s trusted-contact feature. | View grants read access. Takeover gives permanent read/write control after replacing the master password and disabling two-step login methods. See Bitwarden Emergency Access. |
| Setup dependency | Save account recovery material and designate a second organizer. See 1Password account recovery. | The grantor needs an eligible paid account or organization. The contact needs a Bitwarden account, must accept the invitation, and must be confirmed by the grantor. The invitation lasts five days. See Bitwarden Emergency Access. |

Store account recovery information where the intended helper can find it without making it broadly accessible. For 1Password, the Emergency Kit contains sensitive account information. 1Password advises taking it off the computer—for example, printing it or storing it on a USB flash drive—and keeping it somewhere safe. Its security guidance also says, “It’s important that you don’t share your Emergency Kit with anyone.” Follow the provider’s instructions for your account and keep the kit protected; a USB drive is optional, not required. See 1Password account security.
