Choose the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 if you want a standalone camera; choose the Insta360 Flow if you want to stabilize video from a compatible smartphone. They solve different problems: Pocket 3 has its own camera and records to a microSD card, while Flow is a three-axis phone gimbal that relies on your phone for the image. The right choice depends on whether you want a separate camera or prefer to keep filming with the phone you already own.
What is the difference between Pocket 3 and Flow?
The Pocket 3 is a compact camera with a built-in sensor, screen, recording controls, and a microSD card slot. The Flow is a smartphone stabilizer: it holds and moves your phone, while the phone’s camera and recording workflow supply the video. Flow cannot operate as a standalone camera, and Pocket 3 is not a phone gimbal.
That distinction matters more than a simple feature-count comparison. Pocket 3 gives you a dedicated capture device; Flow adds stabilization and handling options to a compatible phone. Neither product is a universal upgrade over the other.

Choose Pocket 3 for a dedicated camera workflow
- You want a camera that records independently of a smartphone camera.
- You value a built-in screen for framing and a compact device designed around capture.
- You want to avoid relying on a specific phone’s compatibility with a gimbal app for the camera functions you need.
- You are prepared to supply a microSD card and manage footage from a separate camera.
DJI lists a 1-inch CMOS sensor, a 2-inch rotatable screen, three-axis mechanical stabilization, ActiveTrack 6.0, and stereo recording for Pocket 3. - You want your current phone camera to remain the camera in your setup.
- You value having a stabilizer with a built-in tripod and selfie stick.
- You have confirmed that your phone fits the clamp and supports the app functions you intend to use.

Flow’s documented modes include Auto, Follow, Pan Follow, FPV, and Lock. They govern how the gimbal responds to handle movement or holds orientation; the result depends on the mode and how you move the stabilizer. Insta360 gimbal modes
Check phone fit and app compatibility before buying Flow
Insta360’s hardware specifications list supported phone dimensions of 64–84 mm wide and 6.9–10 mm thick, with a phone weight of 130–300 g. Those limits establish physical fit, not whether every phone supports every camera-control or tracking feature. How portable are the complete setups?
Pocket 3 weighs 179 g as a camera, according to DJI’s US support listing. Insta360 lists the original Flow gimbal at approximately 369 g and its clamp at approximately 32 g, before adding a phone. Those device-only figures make Pocket 3 lighter to carry as a piece of hardware. But Flow’s total kit includes a phone you may already carry, so consider the weight of your actual setup rather than treating the gimbal weight as the whole kit. Why the advertised battery figures are not a fair head-to-head comparison
DJI lists up to 166 minutes of Pocket 3 operating time, measured at 25°C while recording 1080p/24fps with Wi-Fi and the screen off. Insta360 lists a 12-hour Flow runtime measured at 25°C with the gimbal balanced in a steady, level position; the company says runtime decreases when Flow charges a phone. These figures use different conditions and describe different devices, so they do not establish which setup lasts longer during active vlogging. Pocket 3 requires a microSD card
DJI says Pocket 3 has no built-in storage, so you need a microSD card to record. Check DJI’s current recommended card models and capacities on its support page before choosing one. DJI support specifications

Verify the audio path for either setup
DJI lists Pocket 3 compatibility with DJI Mic 2 and Mic Mini. Flow’s built-in cold shoe provides a mounting point, but a microphone’s compatibility with your phone, adapter, and specific Flow kit must be checked; a physical mount alone does not establish audio support. How to make the decision
- Decide what should capture the image. Pick Pocket 3 if you want a separate camera; pick Flow if you want your smartphone to record.
- Check the complete setup. For Pocket 3, account for a microSD card and a second device. For Flow, account for your phone, its fit in the clamp, and support for the app functions you need.
- Match the controls to your use. Consider whether Pocket 3’s rotatable screen and camera controls or Flow’s phone-based controls, built-in tripod, and selfie stick better suit how you frame and shoot.
- Compare current local bundles. Prices and included accessories vary by region and retailer, so compare the kits actually available where you live rather than assuming a fixed price difference.
What the specifications cannot settle
The manufacturer specifications establish each device’s design and stated features, but they do not provide a controlled head-to-head comparison of real-world image quality, tracking reliability, or audio performance. There is no basis here for claiming that one universally produces better-looking footage. Choose based on the recording workflow, compatibility, and handling features that fit your needs.
