If NPC dialogue is hard to hear, open the game’s Audio or Sound settings and raise Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over, or Speech volume first. Then lower Music and Effects modestly, and test any speech-enhancement, channel, or dynamic-range options the game offers. Turn on subtitles or captions if speech is still difficult to follow. Menu names and available controls vary by game and platform.
1. Balance dialogue against music and effects
Look for separate sliders labeled Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over, or Speech and raise the relevant one. If the game has separate Music, Effects, Ambient, or Background controls, lower competing sounds a little and test another conversation. Avoid immediately turning everything else down: a small adjustment may be enough to make speech clearer without flattening the game’s sound.
Separate category controls are a useful first check, not a universal menu layout. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 105 recommends independent volume controls for categories such as music, voice-over, active and background effects, narration, and voice chat. It notes that competing music and speech can cause players to miss important information.
2. Test dialogue or voice enhancement
Search for an option such as Voice Boost, Dialogue Boost, or Speech Focus. If it is available, turn it on during an NPC conversation and listen for both clearer speech and changes to the rest of the mix. These features are game-specific; they may adjust other sounds rather than simply making dialogue louder.

- TRIFORCE TITANIUM 50 MM DRIVERS — Our cutting-edge proprietary design divides the driver into 3 parts for the individual tuning of highs, mids, and lows—producing brighter, clearer audio with richer highs and more powerful lows

- ADVANCED PASSIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — Sturdy closed earcups fully cover the ears to prevent noise from leaking into the headset, with its cushions providing a closer seal for more sound isolation
- LIGHTWEIGHT DESIGN WITH MEMORY FOAM EAR CUSHIONS — At just 240 g, the headset features thicker headband padding and memory foam ear cushions with leatherette to keep gaming in peak form during grueling tournaments and training sessions

For example, the PlayStation accessibility page for God of War Ragnarök says its Voice Boost adjusts the mix for dialogue clarity and may affect how clearly music and effects are heard while characters speak. Treat that as an example of how one game implements the feature, not a guarantee about similarly named settings elsewhere.
3. Check whether dialogue is being sent to the right channels
If speech is unusually quiet, uneven, or seems absent on one side, check the game’s channel or panning settings. Try Mono if offered; mono sends the same audio to both channels. A center-pan or dialogue-centering option can also keep voices in the middle of the mix.

The trade-off is spatial detail. In God of War Ragnarök, center-pan dialogue plays character dialogue through the center channel, but the game says the setting removes panning and surround information, which can reduce immersion. Its settings page also documents integrated mono audio. These controls and their effects are not standard across games.

If explosions, music, or other loud sounds overwhelm quieter conversation, look for Dynamic Range, Audio Mix, or a preset such as Midnight. A reduced-range setting narrows the difference between quieter and louder sounds; it does not necessarily raise dialogue alone. The available labels and how they change the mix depend on the game.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s accessibility information lists Default, Midnight, and Studio Reference dynamic-range choices, along with separate dialogue, effects, music, ambient, and game-volume controls. Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla audio settings describes presets that reduce the difference between the quietest and loudest sounds. Neither example establishes a universally best preset, so test the choices in the game you are playing.
Some games offer a dynamic audio mix that reduces lower-priority sounds during dialogue. Ubisoft says Star Wars Outlaws has configurable dynamic range and a mix that may remove lower-priority sounds while dialogue plays. If such a setting is present, compare it with your current mix during conversation and gameplay.

5. Turn on subtitles or captions when needed
Enable dialogue subtitles if you need text for spoken lines. Captions can also represent non-speech audio, such as sound effects, depending on the game. Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 104 distinguishes subtitles, which are text equivalents for character speech or dialogue, from captions, which represent all audio.

Check whether the game has separate options for conversations, cinematics, or ambient dialogue. NPC chatter may not be covered by every subtitle setting, and missing those lines can mean losing story context or objectives. The controls differ by game: for instance, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s accessibility information lists dialogue subtitles, but that does not establish how other games handle background NPC speech.

A quick order for testing
- Open the game’s Audio or Sound menu and raise Dialogue, Voice, Voice-over, or Speech if available.
- Lower Music and Effects slightly, then test a conversation before making larger changes.
- Try Voice Boost, Dialogue Boost, or Speech Focus if the game offers one; check whether it changes music or effects too.
- If voices seem uneven across the left and right channels, test Mono or a center-pan option.
- If loud sounds mask quiet speech, try a reduced dynamic-range preset or a dialogue-focused mix.
- Enable subtitles or captions if the speech remains hard to follow, and check separate ambient-dialogue or cinematic options if present.
Restore any setting that makes the wider mix harder to enjoy. If these checks do not help, consult support information for the specific game or review the platform’s audio configuration; these settings alone cannot identify a hardware fault.
