A Treasury ladder can schedule when interest and principal become available, but it cannot lock in future yields or guarantee a fixed amount of income. Start with the dates you expect to need cash, match Treasury maturities to those dates, divide your principal among them, and decide whether each maturity will be spent or reinvested.

What a Treasury ladder can—and cannot—make predictable

A ladder is a group of Treasury securities with staggered maturity dates. Instead of having all principal come due at once, you create several dates when principal may be available. Notes and bonds also pay interest every six months; bills do not pay regular coupons, with their return realized at maturity. Treasury sets the rate or yield at auction, so a scheduled purchase does not establish its future rate in advance. Treasury notes, Treasury bills and marketable Treasury securities have different payment patterns.

That distinction matters when planning income. A ladder can make the timing of cash flows more organized, but the future amount depends on the securities you buy and, if you roll principal forward, the rates available at those later auctions. A maturity date is not a promise that an early resale will return face value.

Choose securities to match the cash flow you need

Security Cash-flow pattern Principal maturity Useful distinction
Treasury bills No regular coupon; return is realized at maturity 4 to 52 weeks, according to TreasuryDirect’s stated terms For short-term cash dates; TreasuryDirect bill reinvestment must use the same term.
Treasury notes Fixed-rate interest every six months 2, 3, 5, 7 or 10 years Coupon dates can provide periodic interest; early-sale price can be above or below face value.
Treasury bonds Fixed-rate interest every six months 20 or 30 years Longer maturity options; early-sale price can be above or below face value.
Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS) Fixed rate applied to inflation-adjusted principal, so payment amounts vary 5, 10 or 30 years Principal adjusts with inflation or deflation; annual principal changes can affect federal tax.

Terms and payment descriptions are from TreasuryDirect’s bill page, note page, bond page and TIPS page.

Choose by the date you need cash, whether you want coupon interest or maturity proceeds, how long you can leave the principal invested, and whether inflation adjustment matters. TIPS have a different principal and tax profile from nominal bills, notes and bonds.

Build the ladder in six steps

  1. Map spending dates and amounts. List when cash is needed and roughly how much. Mark whether each need is meant to be covered by coupon interest, returned principal, or both.
  2. Choose the ladder horizon and spacing. Bills cover terms of a year or less; notes span two to ten years; bonds have 20- and 30-year maturities. Select rungs that fit your actual cash dates rather than assuming a standard number or spacing. Check the upcoming Treasury auction schedule for current offerings and dates; Treasury notes that schedules can change.
  3. Divide the principal. Allocate money among the chosen maturities according to the cash needs each rung should serve. Equal-sized rungs are one possible arrangement, not a required or universally optimal formula.
  4. Choose where to buy and how to bid. TreasuryDirect accepts noncompetitive bids only: you accept the auction-determined rate or yield. Banks, brokers and dealers may accept both noncompetitive and competitive bids; a competitive bid specifies the rate or yield you will accept and can receive a partial award or none. TreasuryDirect’s stated minimum for notes is $100, in $100 increments. Confirm funding is available before the issue date. See TreasuryDirect’s note purchase terms and buying marketable securities.
  5. Set maturity instructions. Decide for each rung whether its proceeds are needed for spending or should be reinvested. TreasuryDirect’s reinvestment feature covers eligible bills, notes, bonds and floating rate notes (FRNs), but not TIPS. Bills must be reinvested in the same term; notes and bonds may be reinvested in a different maturity term. Bill reinvestments can be scheduled for up to two years; notes and bonds can be scheduled for one reinvestment. Check the current account rules before relying on automatic reinvestment. TreasuryDirect explains reinvestment terms here.
  6. Review the calendar as needs change. Revisit the ladder when spending dates or the intended horizon change, and confirm actual offerings and dates before placing orders. Auction patterns and dates can shift, including around holidays.

Illustrative allocation: three dates, three rungs

Suppose an investor has $12,000 set aside and wants principal availability at three different future dates. One simple illustration is to allocate $4,000 to each of three selected maturities, choosing the securities and dates to fit those needs. This is only an example of dividing principal; the appropriate amounts, maturities and suitability depend on the investor’s cash requirements. The actual auction rates are not known when a scheduled purchase is made, and note or bond coupons depend on the securities bought.

Understand the risks before relying on the schedule

Early-sale price can differ from face value

If you sell a note or bond before maturity, you receive its market price, which can be above or below par as market yields and the security’s coupon compare. A planned maturity date helps organize cash availability only if you can hold the security; it does not guarantee a particular resale price. See TreasuryDirect’s note information and bond information.

Reinvestment rates will be set later

When a rung matures and you reinvest, its new rate is the rate available at that future auction. The ladder staggers reinvestment dates, but does not secure today’s yield for future purchases.

Auction dates and offerings can change

Treasury auction patterns are subject to change, and holidays may affect dates. Use the official auction calendar to check current offerings rather than treating a past pattern as a fixed schedule.

Tax treatment differs by security and jurisdiction

TreasuryDirect states that bill and note interest is subject to federal tax but not state or local taxes. TIPS principal adjustments may affect federal tax. These are general descriptions, not individualized tax advice; consult a qualified tax professional about your circumstances. See TreasuryDirect’s pages on bills, notes and TIPS.
