Red light therapy has not been shown to permanently reduce cellulite. A few small studies report short-term changes, but the most directly relevant red and near-infrared LED studies combined light with an anti-cellulite gel, and improvements did not consistently last. Evidence for red light alone producing lasting cellulite reduction remains unproven.
What “red light therapy” can mean
The term covers different devices and protocols, not one standardized treatment. Studies vary in wavelength, dose, schedule, treatment area, and whether light is used with gel, massage, or another modality. Low-level photobiomodulation uses light without heating tissue; other light-based body-contouring procedures heat tissue. Results from one category cannot automatically be applied to another, or to a consumer red-light panel.
The outcome matters, too. A change in pain threshold, skin temperature, circumference, or a cellulite grade is not the same as durable improvement in how cellulite looks. Follow-up length is crucial when a study claims lasting results.
What studies of red and near-infrared LEDs found
2007: LED treatment was paired with gel
Sasaki and colleagues’ 2007 randomized, double-blind study involved nine healthy female volunteers with grade II–III thigh cellulite. For three months, each participant used active phosphatidylcholine-based anti-cellulite gel on one thigh and placebo gel on the other; both thighs also received red 660 nm and near-infrared 950 nm LED sessions twice weekly. At three months, eight of nine active-gel-plus-LED thighs had a lower cellulite grade based on clinical assessment, photographs, and pinch testing. The authors reported minimal clinical changes on the placebo-gel-plus-LED thighs.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
At month 18, five of the eight initially improved thighs had returned to their original grade; three retained improvement. Since the study combined LED exposure with gel and had only nine participants, it cannot establish the effect of red light alone or demonstrate reliable long-term benefit. The authors called for further studies. Study abstract
2023: LED alone did not change baseline grading
A comparative split-thigh/buttock study enrolled eight healthy female participants. Both sides received LED-bed treatment, while one randomized side also received topical anti-cellulite gel. After three months, the gel-plus-LED side was downgraded to a lower cellulite grade; LED treatment alone did not change baseline grading. The study is very small, so its results do not establish a dependable treatment effect. Its abstract reported no adverse reactions during the trial. Study abstract

Why other light studies do not prove red light works
Green 532 nm laser: a short-term result with a different device
A 2013 double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial tested a stand-alone low-level laser with green 532 nm diodes—not red LED therapy. At its two-week endpoint, 19 of 34 participants receiving the device (55.88%) had a reduction of at least one cellulite stage on the Nurnberger–Muller scale, compared with 3 of 34 participants receiving sham treatment (8.82%). The abstract also reported short-term circumference and other measures. These findings apply to that green-laser device and short follow-up; they do not establish that red-light devices work or that any improvement lasts. Trial abstract
650 nm LED: pain and temperature, not durable appearance
A 2024 randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded trial studied 25 female participants with grade 2–4 cellulite over four weeks. It evaluated pain threshold and skin temperature after local 650 nm LED photobiomodulation, with or without systemic irradiation. The abstract reported a 0.4 °C temperature decrease with local treatment and an average 1.2 °C decrease with local plus systemic treatment. Those measurements are not evidence that cellulite appearance or grade was durably reduced. Trial abstract

What FDA guidance says—and does not say
The FDA distinguishes nonthermal photobiomodulation from light-based procedures that heat tissue. Its consumer overview says photobiomodulation may temporarily reduce circumference in the treated area. For carefully controlled infrared procedures that heat tissue, it describes possible temporary improvement in cellulite appearance or circumference reduction. These category-level statements do not mean that ordinary red-light panels permanently remove cellulite or that every device has the same intended use. FDA: Non-Invasive Body Contouring Technologies
The FDA’s January 2023 photobiomodulation guidance is a draft with nonbinding recommendations for premarket submissions for specified devices. It does not establish that consumer wellness devices are cleared for cellulite reduction. FDA draft guidance

In a December 26, 2019 warning letter to Vevazz LLC, the FDA said the firm had not provided evidence demonstrating safety and efficacy for the low-level LED device’s claimed uses, including cellulite reduction. That finding concerned that firm and those claims; it is not a blanket determination about every light-based device. FDA warning letter

How to assess a cellulite treatment claim
- Identify the technology: Check whether the device uses nonthermal photobiomodulation or heats tissue, and note its wavelength and device type.
- Check what was combined: A protocol that includes gel, massage, or another treatment cannot isolate light’s contribution.
- Look at the measured outcome: A reported change in temperature, pain, or circumference does not by itself show a lasting change in cellulite appearance or grade.
- Check the follow-up: A result measured after a few weeks cannot establish that it persists months later.
- Match the claim to the evidence: A small study of a specific clinical protocol does not show that a different home device will produce the same result.
On the available evidence, it is not possible to rank general consumer red-light panels, belts, or LED beds as cellulite treatments. The studies do not establish that a generic device reproduces the tested protocols or provides lasting cellulite reduction.
