Audio-to-haptics technology processes an audio signal and uses it to drive actuators against the body, creating vibrations that can be felt while the sound is heard. A strap may focus sensation in one spot; a vest may distribute it across the torso. Some systems also support game-authored effects, which can be more specific than converting whatever audio happens to be playing.

How does audio-to-haptics turn sound into body vibrations?

The basic signal path is audio source → input or software processing → haptic signal → actuator → body-contact vibration. An actuator moves against the body, making sound-related vibration tactile. The system is translating audio into a physical sensation—not letting the skin hear sound or reproducing every audible detail as touch.

Products can process and distribute the signal in different ways. Woojer says its Osci architecture sends low frequencies to tactile transducers while mids and highs pass through to headphones. Its product information lists six transducers in the Vest 4 and one in the Strap 4; these are manufacturer descriptions, not independent performance comparisons. Woojer’s FAQ and Vest 4 product page describe the approach and hardware.

Audio-derived vibration is also distinct from a game’s native haptic effects. Audio conversion can work with music, films, or game sound by analyzing the audio signal. Native or integrated game haptics use supported game-specific data to trigger designed effects—for example, to distinguish events rather than simply respond to the sound mix. Razer says Sensa HD supports both real-time audio conversion and integrated game profiles. Razer’s Sensa HD page describes its implementation.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What kinds of devices exist, and how do they differ?

“Full-body” is not a consistent hardware specification. It may refer to a multi-point vest, a belt, or coordinated devices; the number and placement of actuators shape where vibration is felt. The examples below reflect manufacturer-published descriptions, not a shared independent test.

Example Form and stated approach What to consider
Woojer Vest 4 Torso vest with six transducers, according to Woojer. Multiple torso contact points; check the product page for connection and compatibility details. Source
Woojer Strap 4 Portable strap with one transducer, according to Woojer. Less bulk and more localized sensation than a multi-point vest. Source
bHaptics TactSuit Air Vest with 16 ERM feedback points; bHaptics lists audio-to-haptics for music and videos through its PC Player. Platform support and connection modes differ by use case; check the current compatibility list. Source
Feelbelt Series One Wearable belt with app modes and intensity adjustment. Feelbelt advertises a 10 Hz–20,000 Hz perception range; this is a vendor claim, not an independently validated measure or a guarantee of uniform tactile fidelity. Source
Razer Sensa HD-enabled devices Razer describes audio conversion, supported game integrations, localized effects, and coordination across multiple devices. Razer states response time under 20 ms; that vendor figure is not directly comparable with independently measured results for other devices. Source
Ontenna Wearable that maps surrounding sound to vibration and light, according to its maker. Its sound-awareness framing differs from entertainment-focused bass or game wearables. Source

Will a wearable work with any phone, console, VR headset, or game?

No. Compatibility depends on the exact model, audio connection, software, platform, and whether a game has native integration. A wearable that can convert computer audio through companion software is not automatically compatible with every console or headset, and a native game profile only applies to supported games and configurations.

For example, bHaptics lists different native, mod, wired, and wireless support across Quest, PC VR, PC games, and PS VR for the TactSuit Air. Its PC Player provides audio-to-haptics for videos and music. Woojer’s product pages list audio connections and Bluetooth, but the connection options still need to match the source device and intended setup. Check the exact product’s current support list before buying; vendor compatibility information can change.

What are audio-to-haptics useful for, and do people experience it the same way?

These systems can add a bodily sensation synchronized with music, films, or game audio. That can make sound more physically noticeable, but the sensation is subjective and does not convey every part of the sound in a consistent way.

A peer-reviewed study of wearable haptics at live music performances found that the audio-haptic experience was not homogeneous across participants: some appreciated the vibration, while others found it unpleasant in parts of the body or struggled to relate what they felt to what they heard. The authors recommend personalization, low sound-to-vibration latency, and time to adapt. Those findings concern a particular live-performance context, not every person or product. Read the study.

Can audio-to-haptics help deaf or hard-of-hearing people experience sound?

Some makers present these devices as an additional way to feel or notice sound. Woojer says its wearables can let deaf and hard-of-hearing users feel music, films, games, and live events. Ontenna describes using vibration and light to communicate ambient sound. These are possible sensory experiences and vendor positioning—not evidence that a particular device benefits everyone.

The cited product descriptions and live-music study do not establish that haptics replace captions, interpreters, or assistive listening systems. Woojer also describes its MAT as a consumer wellness product, not a medical device intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent a condition; wellness marketing should not be read as a medical claim. Woojer’s FAQ provides that qualification.

Which features should you compare?

Start with how and where the device touches the body, then check whether its inputs and software match the audio sources you plan to use. A larger actuator count does not by itself establish better fidelity, comfort, or compatibility.
