HDR can show a wider range of bright highlights and dark detail than SDR, but it is not automatically better or brighter in every scene. The result depends on the video, the Mac display or external screen, and the selected display mode. For battery-powered streaming, macOS can play HDR video in SDR when its video-streaming optimization is enabled.
What changes between HDR and SDR?
HDR (high dynamic range) can preserve more detail across very bright and very dark parts of an image than SDR (standard dynamic range). A compatible display can render those differences, but the result also depends on how the video was mastered and on the display’s capabilities and settings. A scene with few bright highlights may not look dramatically different, and HDR does not make every pixel or the whole screen brighter.
Apple says HDR playback requires a compatible Mac, the latest macOS version, and an HDR10-compatible display, TV, or projector. Apple says the built-in display and Pro Display XDR support Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG. For a supported third-party display, enable High Dynamic Range in Displays settings. Why HDR may look brighter—and what Apple’s brightness figures mean
HDR can make highlights stand out while keeping detail elsewhere in the image. But display brightness specifications refer to different modes and operating conditions, so they are not interchangeable measures of how bright a video will look.

These are Apple’s mode descriptions in its reference modes and presets guidance, checked on October 7, 2026. They are not a promise that every Mac model or video will sustain the listed output. Peak brightness and full-screen sustained brightness describe different conditions.
Does HDR use more battery on a Mac?
Apple documents one specific battery-saving behavior for streaming: when “Optimise video streaming while on battery” is enabled, the Mac plays HDR video in SDR while running on battery. Apple does not give a universal battery-life comparison, a percentage saving, or a general battery penalty for all HDR apps and media. That documented behavior should not be read as a measurement of HDR’s power use in every situation. See Apple’s HDR playback guidance.

Keep HDR for battery-powered streaming
- Open System Settings and select Battery.
- Check whether Optimise video streaming while on battery is enabled. If it is, streamed HDR video may play in SDR while the Mac is on battery.
- To require HDR streaming, connect the Mac to power or turn off that optimization. Video availability and appearance still depend on the service, content, and display.
Which display mode should you use?
Everyday Mac use
For routine office and home use, start with the general-use preset suited to your display, such as Apple XDR Display or Apple Display. Apple describes these presets for general environments; the available options depend on the Mac and display.
HDR video production
Use HDR Video (P3-ST 2084) when your production workflow calls for it and the viewing environment matches its intended controlled conditions aligned with ITU-R BT.2100. It is a workflow-specific reference mode, not a universal setting for watching ordinary content.

How to enable HDR on an external display
For a supported third-party external display, confirm that the screen is HDR10-compatible, then open System Settings > Displays and turn on High Dynamic Range for that display. This control applies to supported external displays; it is not the HDR switch for the Mac’s built-in screen. Apple’s HDR playback support page explains the requirement.

Apple says that high room temperature combined with extended display of bright content can cause brightness limitations on MacBook Pro models with a Liquid Retina XDR display and on Pro Display XDR. If this happens, Apple recommends lowering the room temperature, hiding HDR windows, and allowing the display to cool for 5–10 minutes. Apple’s guidance on brightness limitations describes the conditions and steps.
