Choose an individual Treasury when you need its scheduled payments and maturity date to line up with a known cash need—and can hold it to maturity. Choose a Treasury ETF when you want ongoing, diversified Treasury exposure in shares you can trade, without selecting each bond. Neither option is free of interest-rate risk, and neither guarantees a particular sale price.
How the two investments work
Individual Treasury notes and bonds
An individual Treasury has its own terms, payment schedule, and maturity date. Treasury notes are issued with 2-, 3-, 5-, 7-, or 10-year terms; Treasury bonds have 20- or 30-year terms. Notes and bonds pay interest every six months. TreasuryDirect states that notes have a $100 minimum purchase. See the U.S. Treasury’s Treasury Notes page.
If you hold a security to maturity, its scheduled principal repayment can help match a planned cash need. That certainty depends on holding the security through maturity: its market price can rise or fall in the meantime, and selling early may mean receiving more or less than its face value. Treasury explains that price depends in part on how the security’s stated interest rate compares with prevailing yields in Understanding Pricing and Interest Rates.
Treasury ETFs
A Treasury ETF owns a portfolio of Treasury securities under a fund mandate. The mandate may focus on a maturity range or index. For example, the iShares 0-1 Year Treasury Bond ETF’s summary prospectus dated June 29, 2026, says it seeks to track an index of Treasuries with remaining maturities of one year or less. A long-term Treasury fund provides exposure to longer maturities instead. These are product-specific strategies, so check the current prospectus for the fund you are considering.

An ETF share is not an individual Treasury with a maturity claim. The fund may buy, sell, or replace holdings to follow its mandate; owning a share does not give you a personal maturity date or promise a specified principal repayment on a date you choose.
At a glance
| Consideration | Individual Treasury | Treasury ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Maturity and cash flow | Security-specific payment terms and maturity date; useful for matching a future date if held to maturity. | Fund-defined exposure; no investor-selected maturity date or promised principal payment date. |
| Interest-rate risk | Market price can fall when yields rise; this matters if you sell before maturity. | Portfolio value responds to rate changes. Longer duration generally means greater sensitivity. |
| Costs | TreasuryDirect says a direct purchase has no purchase charge beyond the security cost. Broker and secondary-market transactions may involve other costs. | Annual fund expenses, plus possible brokerage costs, bid-ask spread, and a premium or discount to net asset value (NAV). |
| Selling and access | Marketable securities can be sold, but TreasuryDirect-held securities must be transferred to a broker or dealer first and are subject to a 45-day holding period. | Shares trade on an exchange, but execution price depends on market conditions and can differ from NAV. |
| Ongoing management | You choose securities, maturities, and reinvestment; a ladder requires ongoing attention. | The fund manages holdings within its mandate, for an ongoing expense; your shares have no fixed personal maturity. |
What risks should you compare?
Rate changes affect both choices
Bond prices generally move opposite to market yields: when yields rise, existing fixed-rate securities tend to lose market value; when yields fall, they tend to gain. Longer maturities or durations are generally more sensitive. For an individual bond held to maturity, interim price changes do not alter its scheduled maturity payment, but they matter if you need to sell earlier. An ETF has no single maturity date for you to wait for, so its portfolio’s changing market value remains relevant while you own the shares.

Duration is a useful measure of a fund or portfolio’s sensitivity to interest-rate changes, but it is not a guarantee of a particular return. Compare the duration and maturity exposure of the specific ETF with the date you expect to use the money. The Vanguard Long-Term Treasury ETF prospectus, dated December 19, 2025 and supplemented June 30, 2026, also describes income risk when rates fall and portfolio changes reset fund income.
Early sale changes the individual-bond calculation
A maturity date is useful only if your plans allow you to hold through it. If you sell an individual note or bond sooner, its sale price reflects then-current market yields and may be below par. Do not treat the maturity value as an early-sale price guarantee.

ETF market price can differ from NAV
An ETF’s exchange-traded price can be above or below the value of its underlying holdings per share, known as NAV. The gap and the bid-ask spread can affect what you receive when selling. These effects depend on the fund and trading conditions; exchange access alone does not ensure an immediate sale at a price you consider acceptable.
Compare the full cost, not just the headline fee
TreasuryDirect says buying a marketable Treasury directly there does not add a purchase charge beyond the security cost. That does not mean every route to owning an individual Treasury is costless: broker commissions, secondary-market pricing, and bid-ask spreads can apply. TreasuryDirect’s pages on buying a marketable security and selling a marketable security explain the TreasuryDirect process.

An ETF charges an annual operating expense, and trading may add commissions or spreads. As one product-specific example—not an industry average—the Franklin U.S. Treasury Bond ETF summary prospectus dated August 1, 2026, disclosed total annual fund operating expenses of 0.09%. It also noted that customary brokerage commissions and intermediary fees may be additional, and that shares may trade above or below NAV. Check the current prospectus because expenses and fund terms can change.
For a fair comparison, consider your expected holding period, account and broker costs, likely trading frequency, and whether you will need to reinvest maturing proceeds. Direct ownership may require more choices and maintenance; an ETF’s ongoing fee pays for a managed portfolio within its stated mandate.

How liquid are they in practice?
“Liquid” means an asset can generally be sold; it does not mean a guaranteed price or instant access in every account. TreasuryDirect describes most Treasuries as liquid, but selling a Treasury held there requires transferring it to a broker or dealer, and the 45-day holding period applies to TreasuryDirect-held securities. That extra step can matter if your timing is tight. See TreasuryDirect’s marketable securities FAQ.
ETF shares can be traded through a brokerage account during exchange trading hours. The actual execution price still depends on the market, the fund’s trading conditions, and the spread between buy and sell quotes. Before relying on either route for a near-term cash need, confirm that the security is held in an account from which you can sell it, understand any transfer or settlement steps, and allow for price movement.
Quick Recap
Which option fits your goal?
Consider an individual Treasury if you have a known date for the money
- Match a Treasury’s maturity to a planned expense or cash need, while recognizing that the match works as intended only if you can hold it to maturity.
- Choose and manage the securities yourself, including deciding what to do with interest payments and principal when they arrive.
- Accept that an early sale may produce a gain or loss based on market yields at that time.
Consider a Treasury ETF if you want continuing exposure
- Use a fund when you prefer a portfolio of Treasuries under one defined mandate rather than selecting individual securities.
- Check the fund’s maturity range, duration, expense ratio, trading costs, and current prospectus.
- Accept that you will not receive a personal principal repayment on a date you choose, and that the share price may differ from NAV when you trade.
Check these details before deciding
- Set the cash-use date. If you need a specific amount on a specific date, ask whether you can hold an individual Treasury with a matching maturity or whether an ETF’s ongoing exposure fits your plan.
- Compare rate exposure. Look at the individual security’s maturity and coupon, or the ETF’s duration and maturity mandate—not just the word “Treasury.”
- Add up ownership costs. Include fund expenses, commissions, spreads, secondary-market pricing, and the effort of managing maturities or reinvesting cash.
- Verify how you can sell. Check the account, transfer process, trading access, and any timing restrictions for the specific holding.
- Read the current product documents. Fund mandates and expenses are product-specific and can change; use the latest prospectus for the ETF under consideration.
