Use a red light therapy device only for the concern it is designed to treat, follow that model’s instructions for timing and placement, and wear the recommended eye protection whenever required. There is no universal home-use schedule: the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says treatment time varies by device. Results are also uncertain, so a device’s “FDA-cleared” status should not be read as proof that it will deliver every advertised benefit.

Choose a device for the concern and body area

“Red light therapy” covers different devices, not one interchangeable treatment. The AAD lists masks, panels, and wands for skin concerns, and caps, combs, and helmets for hair-loss concerns. Choose a product whose stated indication matches both the concern and the area you intend to treat; do not assume a device intended for one area or purpose is suitable for another.

Before starting, ask a board-certified dermatologist whether the device is appropriate for you, whether it could worsen a skin condition, or whether it could interact with medication or another treatment. This is particularly relevant for people with darker skin tones: the AAD notes that visible-light sensitivity may be greater and can lead to more intense, longer-lasting hyperpigmentation.

Understand what “FDA-cleared” means

Check the device’s stated indication, instructions, and warnings, and verify whether it is FDA-cleared for that intended use. The AAD explains that FDA clearance means a device is considered low risk; it does not establish that the device is effective for every marketed claim. Marketing terms such as “FDA approved” or “FDA certified” are not substitutes for verifying clearance and the specific intended use.

Follow the manual for every session

Use the device only as its own instructions direct, including the session schedule, distance or positioning, cleaning, and electrical precautions. The AAD’s guidance is: “The amount of time needed varies, so follow the directions that come with the device.” It does not establish a universal session length or frequency, so do not copy a schedule from another product.

Regular use may be needed and results can take time, but increasing session length or frequency beyond the manual is not a shortcut supported by these sources. Keep the manufacturer’s instructions available and follow any model-specific limits and warnings.

Protect your eyes and watch for reactions

If the manual requires eye protection, wear the specified protective goggles every time. The AAD warns, “Don’t substitute sunglasses for protective goggles.” The FDA also identifies eye injury as a risk with light-based procedures. Check that any goggles you use are the type recommended for your specific device.

The AAD says short-term use appears safe, though some users experience temporary mild pain or irritated skin; long-term skin and hair effects are not known. The FDA lists rare possible complications of photobiomodulation (PBM), including sensitivity, burns, pigmentation changes, itching, nodules, and pain. Stop using the device and seek medical advice if you develop a concerning reaction.

Ask a clinician before use in higher-risk situations

FDA PBM guidance identifies circumstances in which use may be unsuitable. If any apply, consult a qualified clinician and the device’s actual labeling before treatment:

  • A photosensitivity disorder or medication that makes you sensitive to light.
  • Pregnancy or plans to become pregnant.
  • An active implant, such as a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator.
  • Skin cancer, or a history of cancer, at the treatment site.
  • An active infection, wound, or lesion in the area you would treat.

The FDA’s January 2023 PBM guidance is explicitly marked “Draft” and “Not for implementation. Contains non-binding recommendations.” It is safety context, not a universal consumer regimen; device-specific labeling remains important.

What results can you reasonably expect?

The AAD reports that studies of red-light LED devices have found subtle to noticeable facial results for concerns such as fine lines, dark spots, roughness, redness, and loose skin. It also describes evidence of some hair regrowth for hereditary or hormonal hair loss. These findings do not guarantee an individual result, establish that a device works for other conditions, or show that home devices match clinical devices.

Studies use different devices, schedules, and designs, making results difficult to compare; the AAD says more research is needed and long-term effects remain unknown. One example cited by the AAD involved 90 patients receiving eight LED red-light facial treatments over four weeks; more than 90% reported some improvement. That is a result from one study, not a forecast for every device or user.

A 2025 expert consensus abstract, based on a literature search conducted in June 2022 and involving 21 experts, describes PBM as an effective option for certain conditions, including peripheral neuropathy, androgenetic alopecia, ulcers of several etiologies, pain attributed to diabetic foot ulcers, and acute radiation dermatitis. Those clinical-literature conclusions do not show that a consumer home device is cleared or effective for each indication.

Compare devices on practical and safety details

When weighing products, compare the details that affect suitability and safe, consistent use—not a single wavelength or power figure in isolation. The available guidance does not establish one optimal home specification.

  • Does the device’s stated indication match your concern and treatment area?
  • Is it FDA-cleared for the intended use, and what exactly is that use?
  • What schedule, positioning, and cleaning does the manual specify?
  • Does the device require eye protection, and which goggles are compatible?
  • Will its fit and setup make it practical to follow the directions consistently?
  • What is the price? The AAD states that at-home devices may cost $100 to more than $1,000; this is its stated range, not an independently verified current market survey.
