Edition names do not guarantee particular extras, requirements do not promise a specific level of performance, and refund rules differ by storefront.
What should you check in a PC game edition?
Read the contents list on the product page for the exact edition you plan to buy. “Deluxe,” “Gold,” “Ultimate,” “Complete,” and “Collector’s” are marketing names, not consistent descriptions of what is included. Steam’s developer documentation gives “Deluxe Edition” as an example of a bundle that might contain a base game and DLC or a related application; it is not a definition that applies to every game or publisher.
Look for the base game, expansions, playable DLC, soundtracks, artbooks, cosmetic items, virtual currency, and any other bundled products. Expansions and playable DLC can add game content; soundtracks and artbooks are different kinds of extras. Check whether the base game is included and whether you already own any included DLC. Do not assume a higher-priced edition is better value without comparing its actual contents and price at checkout.
Steam also has distinct bundle mechanics. Its “Complete The Set” bundles charge for items you do not already own, while “Must Purchase Together” bundles can only be bought if you own none of the included products. Those rules describe Steam bundles, not every edition or bundle sold elsewhere.

Will your PC run the game?
Compare your computer’s specifications with the requirements on the exact game’s store page. Steamworks instructs developers to specify supported operating systems and enter system requirements for their store pages. Listings may separate minimum and recommended configurations, but those are game-specific figures—not a universal promise of a particular frame rate or graphics quality.
- Operating system: Check the required version and architecture, if specified.
- Processor (CPU): Compare the listed model or performance class with your PC’s processor.
- Memory (RAM): Check the amount required or recommended.
- Graphics (GPU): Compare the graphics card or processor and any stated video-memory (VRAM) requirement.
- DirectX or other graphics API: Check any version listed.
- Storage: Confirm you have enough free space. If the seller gives separate download and installation figures, account for both.
- Other conditions: Look for requirements or notes about an internet connection, account, launcher, controller, or specific hardware feature.
A Steam listing such as CONTROL Ultimate Edition illustrates how a game can show separate minimum and recommended configurations; its figures should not be applied to another game. If your system is close to the minimum, or you use laptop or mobile graphics, look for the publisher’s game-specific notes and recent reliable testing. The published requirements alone do not establish the performance you will get.

How do PC game refunds differ by store?
The policy depends on where the purchase is made, what kind of product it is, and sometimes where you live. The comparison below summarizes official storefront guidance checked on October 7, 2026; policies can change, and local consumer rights may also apply.

Steam: account for playtime and preorder timing
For a preorder that cannot be played before release, Steam’s 14-day period starts on the release date. If the game offers Early Access or Advance Access, that playtime counts toward the two-hour limit. Steam says its policy is designed to remove purchase risk, not to provide free games.

Epic: check the label and product type
On Epic’s PC/Mac store, check the specific product page for “refundable” or “self-refundable” before checkout. Some pre-purchases can be refunded before release; after release, the usual eligibility conditions apply. Epic says EU consumers generally have a statutory withdrawal right, though the policy notes that a buyer may be asked to waive that right at purchase.
Microsoft: check the offer and request process
Microsoft’s guidance does not set out a general time-and-playtime allowance like Steam’s. Check the offer terms and Microsoft’s refund request process to determine whether your purchase is eligible.

What if you buy a third-party game key?
A key bought from a third-party seller is not a Steam purchase simply because it activates on Steam. Valve explicitly excludes purchases made outside Steam, such as third-party CD keys, from its refund policy. Epic likewise directs buyers whose checkout was handled by another merchant to that seller’s terms. Before paying, check the seller’s refund conditions and confirm that the key is for the intended platform and region.

Yes. Store policies are not a complete statement of consumer law. Epic says EU consumers generally have a statutory withdrawal right for purchases, and Steam notes that some jurisdictions may provide additional rights for faulty games. The details depend on location and circumstances, so check the applicable official consumer guidance for your jurisdiction if that question affects your purchase.

What to verify at checkout
- Open the exact edition’s contents list. Confirm the base game, DLC, expansions, and extras included, and whether you already own any bundled content.
- Compare your PC with the game’s listing. Check operating system, CPU, RAM, GPU and VRAM, graphics API, storage, and any additional conditions.
- Identify who processes payment. Use that storefront’s refund rules; do not apply another store’s policy to the transaction.
- Check eligibility for this specific product. Look for refund labels, time and runtime conditions, preorder timing, and exclusions.
- Check regional rights where relevant. Store policy and statutory rights can differ by location.
