A 2024 experiment found lower anxiety and physiological arousal after participants squeezed a vibrating stress ball for 20 seconds. But that is an early, short-term signal, not proof that vibration provides lasting relief, works for everyone, or treats an anxiety disorder.
What counts as haptic stimulation?
Haptic stimulation is a broad term for touch-based feedback, including vibration. The evidence discussed here covers several different approaches: squeezing a vibrating ball, wearing an investigational headset that vibrates near the ears, and receiving wearable vibration linked to heart rate. They differ in device, placement, feedback, participants, and outcomes, so results from one should not be treated as proof for another.
That distinction matters if you are considering a consumer gadget. A regular stress ball is not the same as the vibrating ball used in a study, and no cited study establishes that a particular retail device reproduces research conditions or has been clinically validated for relaxation.
What the studies found
Vibrating stress ball: a brief experimental signal
In a 2024 study published in Human Movement Science, participants viewed either a stressful or calming image and then repeatedly squeezed a vibrating ball for 20 seconds. Anxiety, measured with the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and arousal, measured through electrodermal activity, decreased after the squeezing task in a pre-post experiment with a control group. Researchers also varied the relationship between the ball’s vibration frequency and participants’ natural squeezing rhythm. The result suggests a possible immediate effect under those experimental conditions; it does not show that relief lasts beyond the task. Read the study record on PubMed.

Investigational headset: preliminary findings in adults with anxiety
A 2022 open-label pilot examined Mechanical Affective Touch Therapy (MATT), an investigational headset that provides gentle vibration at both mastoid processes, the bony areas behind the ears. Twenty-two adults with anxiety disorders and at least moderate symptom severity used the device at home at least twice daily for four weeks. The report described improvements from baseline in anxiety and depressive symptoms and enhanced mindfulness, alongside EEG observations. Because participants knew they were using the device and there was no blinded comparison group, the findings are preliminary rather than proof of efficacy. The study record says data collection was supported by Affect Neuro Inc., the device developer. Read the study record on PubMed.
Wearable biofeedback: placement and measured response differed
A 2025 study summarized by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology examined heart-rate-driven vibration during eyes-closed wakeful rest, comparing wrist, hand, forearm, and shoulder placements. Heart rate was lower at the wrist, shoulder, and forearm, while alpha power did not change. Participants rated restfulness and location preference highest for the forearm and shoulder; they reported greater comfort, relaxation, and sleepiness with forearm stimulation, while wrist vibration was more noticeable. These findings concern a research setup, not every wearable or a named commercial product. Heart rate, EEG, and subjective ratings are distinct measures rather than interchangeable proof of relaxation. See the KITopen study record.

A registered trial does not yet provide results
A randomized, open, three-arm trial registered in Japan compared two minutes of gradually slowing vibration, two minutes of fixed-tempo vibration, and no stimulation in healthy men aged 20–49. The registry lists 42 participants enrolled and marks results as unpublished. Since the record provides no outcomes, it cannot establish whether either vibration pattern helped participants recover from acute stress. The registry disclosed the information on June 20, 2025, and says the trial was completed. Check the UMIN registry entry.
Older evidence and an adjacent study
A 1982 randomized study assigned 16 participants to vibration at a footrest, backrest, both, or neither. It reported pre-to-post changes in EMG and self-reported muscle tension in vibration conditions, but not in the control condition. Its small sample and age limit how much it can tell us about current devices. See the study record on PubMed.

A 2025 pilot study page describes smart goggles that deliver gentle vibration to the eyes and temples at bedtime and measure sleep as well as self-reported anxiety, stress, and relaxation. The available page information establishes the study’s purpose, but not its results, so it does not support a claim that the goggles improve these outcomes. View the JMIR Formative Research study page.
What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The findings are not a single, comparable “relaxation score.” Studies assessed different things: self-reported anxiety, electrodermal arousal, heart rate, EEG, muscle tension, and subjective restfulness. A change in one measure does not necessarily mean a person feels calmer, and the KIT study’s unchanged alpha power illustrates that different measures may not move together.

The evidence also varies in maturity. It includes a controlled acute experiment, an open-label clinical pilot, a small wearable study during rest, an older small study, and a registered trial whose results are unpublished. Together, these findings make haptic stimulation plausible as an area worth studying, but they do not establish long-term effectiveness, a best device, or a standard protocol.
- Duration: The 20-second stress-ball task does not establish sustained day-to-day stress relief.
- Best settings: The studies do not establish an optimal vibration frequency, intensity, duration, placement, or pattern.
- Individual response: Results from specific participants and settings do not show that everyone will respond similarly.
- Product equivalence: No cited source establishes that a particular retail device delivers the same stimulation as a research device.
- Treatment claims: These studies do not show that vibration treats anxiety disorders.
How to think about trying a haptic relaxation device
If you want to explore vibration as a comfort or relaxation aid, treat it as an optional tactile experience rather than a proven therapy. Look at what a device actually does—where it vibrates, whether the pattern is fixed or responsive, and how it is controlled—and avoid assuming that a product’s wellness claims are backed by the studies above. A vibrating stress ball is the closest match to the 2024 experiment; an ordinary squeeze ball is not the same intervention.
