There is no officially ranked “best” solo loadout in The Outlast Trials. The most useful setup depends on the Trial, its modifiers, and the problem you want your gear to solve. A practical starting point is Stun with a recovery-focused Amp such as Self Revive when survival is the priority; switch to X-Ray, Heal, or utility Amps when scouting, recovery, or the objective matters more. These are mechanics-based recommendations, not proven rankings.
How to choose a solo loadout
Choose your Rig to address the biggest threat or obstacle in the Trial, then use Amps to compensate for your main constraint: carrying capacity, movement through obstacles, Rig cooldown, or a limited chance to recover from a mistake. Red Barrels advised players to “equip the best loadout for each Trial” in its May 18, 2023 Early Access update. That advice is general rather than a solo ranking, and Trial conditions or Variators can change what is useful.
Compare a candidate setup across four practical questions:
- Survival buffer: What option helps if a mistake puts you in danger or downs you?
- Objective speed: Can it help you complete the task or get past an obstacle?
- Information and stealth: Does it help you find threats or stay out of their way?
- Resource and cooldown economy: Does it improve carrying capacity or help you reuse a Rig sooner?
Which Rig should you use solo?
The detailed effects below are documented in Red Barrels’ March 2024 v1.0 notes. Later balance changes may have altered them, so use the current in-game descriptions as the final word on exact behavior.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stun for an emergency response
Stun is a reasonable default when you value a quick response to danger. Red Barrels’ v1.0 notes describe its cooldown as reduced to 120 seconds. That figure is from the March 2024 update, not a guarantee of the current cooldown. Pairing Stun with a recovery-oriented Amp can add a separate safety net, but neither choice is established as the universally strongest solo combination.
X-Ray for scouting
Consider X-Ray when locating threats or scouting from concealment is useful for your route. The v1.0 notes say it became usable from hiding spots. Pairing it with Backpack is a mechanics-based option if the Trial’s demands make another inventory slot valuable.
Heal for recovery
Heal is an option when you want a recovery-focused Rig; the v1.0 notes say it can be used while hiding. This can suit a cautious approach, but the documented effect does not establish Heal as categorically better than Stun or X-Ray.

Which Amps help most on a solo run?
Pick an Amp for the specific limitation you expect to encounter. These effects are also drawn from the March 2024 v1.0 notes and should be checked in-game for later changes.
Recommended Free Tools
| Your main concern | Amp to consider | What the documented effect does |
|---|---|---|
| Limited carrying capacity | Backpack | Adds one inventory slot. |
| Doors or planks slowing your route | Smash | Breaks doors or planks in one strike. |
| Wanting Rig access sooner | Hide and Restore | Accelerates Rig cooldown recovery from hiding spots. |
| Wanting another recovery chance | Self Revive | Allows one resurrection per Trial. |
These are situational trade-offs, not a tier list. Smash is useful when the route makes breakable obstacles a meaningful delay; it may matter less when they do not affect your objective. Hide and Restore makes sense when you expect to use hiding spots and benefit from quicker Rig recovery. Self Revive offers a limited recovery opportunity, rather than unlimited protection.

General safety: Stun with Self Revive
Use Stun when you want an emergency response and consider Self Revive for a separate chance to recover from being downed. This is a sensible safety-oriented pairing if both options are available to your character; it is not a guarantee against failure.
Scouting and flexibility: X-Ray with Backpack
Choose X-Ray when threat information from concealment helps you plan, and add Backpack if an extra inventory slot better fits the Trial’s demands. If carrying capacity is not limiting you, another Amp may address a more important problem.

Obstacle clearing: choose Smash for the route
Consider Smash when doors or planks obstruct a useful route. It is an Amp choice rather than a substitute for selecting a Rig to handle the Trial’s main threat. Its value depends on whether those obstacles actually slow your objective.

Longer runs: consider Hide and Restore
If you expect to hide regularly and want Rig cooldown recovery sooner, Hide and Restore is a plausible utility choice. Its benefit depends on your use of hiding spots and the current in-game effect.
Recovery-oriented play: Heal
Choose Heal when recovery is your priority and using it from a hiding spot suits your approach. It is an alternative to Stun or X-Ray, not an automatic upgrade over them.

Red Barrels’ July 14, 2026 Season 7 update introduced Rig customization and up to three saved loadouts that can be switched before starting a Trial. Use the slots for different needs—for example, a safety setup, a scouting setup, and an objective-focused option—then select the one that fits the current Trial and its Variators. The September 8, 2026 update says player loadouts are displayed in the pause menu.

Do not assume every solo mode follows ordinary Trial rules. The July 2026 notes describe a Hardcore weekly Escalation theme with no respawns in solo play, and persistent maximum-health loss in higher Endless Escalation Trials. Those rules are specific to those Escalation modes. The same update’s Jammer change applies Electric Disruption instantly to Imposters in Invasion; that is an Invasion change, not a general solo PvE recommendation.
What the latest patch context means for these builds
The available detailed official descriptions for the Rigs and Amps discussed here come from the March 2024 v1.0 update, including X-Ray’s use from hiding spots, Heal’s use while hiding, and the listed Amp effects. Check the live in-game descriptions for exact current behavior. Red Barrels’ September 17, 2026 hotfix says it addressed reported bugs and crashes; it does not announce a Rig or Amp balance change.
