A fund manager change means the person or team responsible for selecting and executing the scheme’s arbitrage positions has changed. By itself, that is not proof that the scheme’s objective or terms have changed, and it does not reliably predict future returns. Read the specific notice, compare it with the latest scheme documents, and assess execution, portfolio and risk disclosures before deciding whether to act.
What does a fund manager change mean for my mutual fund?
An arbitrage fund seeks to benefit from temporary price differences between a share traded in the cash market and a related futures contract. The manager identifies opportunities and the scheme takes positions in both markets. SEBI describes this strategy in its mutual fund investor education material.
A manager change is a personnel or responsibility update. It can affect who makes investment decisions or how management duties are divided, but the change alone does not establish that the scheme’s investment objective, permitted investments or other terms have changed. Those details must be checked in the scheme’s own notice and documents.
What to check in the notice and scheme documents
Read the manager-change notice
- Check the effective date and identify the outgoing and incoming managers.
- See whether management responsibility is transferred to one person, shared, or otherwise revised.
- Look for any additional amendments and read the notice’s statement about whether other scheme terms remain unchanged.
Notices can make clear that a personnel update does not alter the other scheme terms. For example, a SEBI-hosted Axis Mutual Fund addendum dated March 27, 2026 revised fund-management responsibilities effective April 1, 2026, updated the “Who manages the Scheme” details, and stated that other terms remained unchanged. Compare the latest SID and KIM
Use the scheme’s latest Scheme Information Document (SID) and Key Information Memorandum (KIM) to verify its investment objective, permitted investments, asset allocation, benchmark, risk profile and stated management arrangement. If the notice and those documents appear inconsistent, check for a later update from the fund house rather than assuming which version applies.
Review portfolio and risk disclosures
Look at recent portfolio and risk disclosures, and compare performance over an appropriate period with the scheme’s stated benchmark. A short-term difference in returns does not, on its own, show that the manager change caused it. Arbitrage opportunities and returns vary with market conditions, while selection and execution can affect how the strategy is implemented.

How a manager change differs from a scheme or AMC change
Three different events can be confused:
- Manager or responsibility change: the named manager or allocation of management duties changes.
- Fundamental-attribute change: a change to specified features of the scheme, rather than merely who manages it.
- Change in control of the AMC: control of the asset management company changes.
The cited SEBI regulation material describes investor communication and exit provisions for specified changes to fundamental attributes and for a change in control of an AMC. It does not establish that an individual manager change automatically triggers those provisions. The material is a legacy text, not a fully current consolidated rulebook, so check the latest applicable rules and the exact scheme notice before relying on any exit right. Does a manager change make an arbitrage fund riskier?
The change itself does not establish that risk has increased or decreased. Arbitrage funds still face strategy and operational risks, including finding fewer suitable opportunities, executing trades at unfavorable prices, mark-to-market movements and changes in the price relationship between cash and futures positions (basis risk).

A SEBI-hosted scheme document also notes that, in extraordinary circumstances, a fund may have to unwind positions before expiry to meet redemptions. In that situation, profits that appeared locked in may not be realized. The document describes the aim of risk controls this way: “The aim is not to eliminate the risk completely but to have a structured mechanism towards risk management thereby maximizing potential opportunities and minimize the adverse effects of risk.” Union Arbitrage Fund SID.

A manager change alone is not enough to determine whether you should redeem. First establish what changed, then assess the scheme against your own investment needs. Consider whether the objective, permitted investments, stated risk profile or management arrangement has changed; what recent disclosures show about the portfolio and execution; and whether the scheme remains suitable for you. Do not treat a personnel update as a performance forecast.

If you independently decide to redeem, check the scheme’s current exit-load terms and the applicable NAV timing. AMFI explains that redemption proceeds are based on the applicable NAV and may be subject to an exit load. A manager-change notice does not, by itself, establish a no-load exit window.
