U.S. data-center construction was reported at $84.95 billion in August 2026—but that is a seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR), not money spent during August. What does the $84.95 billion figure mean?

SAAR means seasonally adjusted annual rate. It annualizes the pace implied by activity in a particular month, after seasonal adjustment. The $84.95 billion figure therefore does not mean that $84.95 billion of work was completed or paid for in August, and it is not a cumulative total for the first eight months of the year.
What does the construction measure include—and leave out?
The Census Bureau’s Value of Construction Put in Place survey estimates the monthly dollar value of construction work done in the United States, including new structures and improvements in both private and public sectors. Could the August estimate change?
