The Moon’s craters last longer because its surface lacks the wind, flowing water, weather, and plate tectonics that steadily wear down and recycle Earth’s crust. Earth’s atmosphere also filters out some incoming objects before they make craters, but that is a separate reason Earth has fewer impact scars—not the reason its craters later disappear.
Why do Moon craters last longer?
On Earth, wind and water erode rock, vegetation changes the surface, and sediments can bury older terrain. Over geologic time, these processes soften crater rims, fill depressions, and obscure the shapes that would make an impact site easy to recognize. NASA describes wind, water, and vegetation as processes that erase terrestrial crater evidence on geologic timescales (NASA Earth Observatory).
The Moon has virtually no atmosphere, liquid water, or wind to drive comparable surface erosion. As NASA puts it, “On the Moon, where there’s no liquid water or wind, evidence of our solar system’s impact history has been preserved for billions of years” (NASA Science). This describes the broad preservation of the lunar impact record, not a guaranteed lifetime for every crater.
How Earth’s surface hides or destroys craters
Erosion and vegetation
Rain, rivers, and wind gradually move material across Earth’s surface. Plants and other surface processes also alter or cover terrain. A crater can become difficult to identify as its rim wears away or its basin fills—even if the impact structure has not been completely erased.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Plate tectonics and crustal recycling
Earth’s crust is continually reshaped, and plate tectonics eventually destroys even very large impact structures, with few exceptions, according to NASA Earth Observatory. A crater that is buried, deformed, or carried into a zone of crustal recycling may lose the surface features that reveal its origin.
Volcanic and sedimentary resurfacing
Lava can cover older terrain, while layers of sediment can bury it. These processes obscure impact evidence without requiring the impact site to vanish in a single event. NASA lists recent volcanic activity alongside erosion and plate tectonics as a reason much of Earth’s impact evidence is obscured (NASA Science).

Why Earth’s atmosphere is a separate factor
Earth’s atmosphere can break up or disrupt incoming objects before they reach the surface. Some impactors never make a crater at all; others are disrupted during impact. That filtering helps explain why Earth has fewer recognizable impact scars, but it does not erode a crater after it forms. The later loss or concealment of craters comes from surface processes such as erosion, burial, volcanic resurfacing, and crustal recycling (NASA Earth Observatory).
Earth and the Moon preserve impact evidence differently
| Factor | Earth | Moon |
|---|---|---|
| Incoming-object filtering | The atmosphere can break up or disrupt some objects before or during impact. | There is virtually no atmosphere to filter incoming objects in the same way. |
| Wind and flowing water | Weather and water erode and reshape crater features. | No liquid water or wind drives comparable erosion. |
| Vegetation | Vegetation is among the processes that can obscure crater evidence. | No vegetation-driven surface change. |
| Crustal recycling | Plate tectonics eventually destroys most impact structures, including large ones, with few exceptions. | No Earth-like plate tectonic recycling. |
| Other resurfacing | Volcanism and sediment burial can cover impact evidence. | Later impacts, ejecta, and local geological activity still modify the surface. |
Are lunar craters unchanged?
No. The Moon’s surface is far less actively reshaped than Earth’s, but it is not frozen in time. Later impacts can excavate, damage, or partly bury older craters with ejecta, and local geological activity can alter some areas. As a result, crater preservation varies with a feature’s size, age, location, and resurfacing history (NASA Science).

What crater preservation tells scientists
Because the Moon retains a more legible impact record, scientists can study crater numbers and condition to compare the relative ages of surface regions and investigate impact history. A heavily cratered surface is generally older than a less cratered one when comparing appropriate areas, though impacts and local resurfacing complicate a simple count. NASA explains how lunar craters help researchers study the Moon and the solar system’s impact history (NASA Science).
Earth is not crater-free: impact structures exist, but many have been degraded, buried, obscured, or recycled. The Moon’s advantage is not that its craters never change; it is that fewer ongoing surface processes erase their evidence.
