Its PS5 Pro cover manual warns that doing so may cause fire, electric shock, injury, malfunction or overheating. Sony also warns that covers installed incorrectly may cause the console to overheat. Turn the console off and unplug it before removing or refitting covers.
Is it safe to run a PS5 Pro with the covers off?
No. Sony’s official PlayStation 5 Pro Console Covers instruction manual says: “Do not use your PS5 console without the covers.” Sony lists fire, electric shock, injury, malfunction and overheating as possible consequences. These are manufacturer warnings; the manual does not quantify how likely any outcome is.
Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro CFI-70XX-B30 Safety Guide also warns that incorrect cover installation may cause the main unit to overheat. Sony’s manuals provide safety instructions, not comparative thermal testing: they do not report measured temperatures or establish whether removing a cover changes cooling performance. Do not treat running the console uncovered as a cooling method.
Can you turn on a PS5 Pro before putting the covers back on?
No. Refit the covers correctly before turning the console on. Sony’s instruction applies to the covers as a set; its materials do not approve operation with one cover missing or with a particular panel removed.

How to remove and refit PS5 Pro covers safely
- Turn off and unplug the console. Disconnect the AC power cord and other cables before handling the covers.
- Let it cool. Sony warns that the console may remain hot after use and that continued handling can cause burns. The manual does not specify a fixed cooling time, so wait until the console has cooled before proceeding.
- Work on a soft cloth on a flat surface. Handle the covers carefully and watch their edges and clips to avoid pinching or injuring your fingers.
- Match each cover to its position. The covers have different shapes; use the marks on their inside surfaces to identify where each belongs.
- Fit the clips into the matching holes. Align each cover with its corresponding console holes and press until it clicks into place. Do not turn on the console if a cover is misaligned or not secured.
- Reconnect the feet and cables. Reattach the feet and reconnect the cables before turning the console on.
What to do if a cover is missing or damaged
Restore the console’s covered configuration before using it. Sony documents an official PS5 Pro cover accessory, the PlayStation 5 Pro Console Covers (model CFI-ZCS3). When choosing a replacement, check that the listing explicitly states compatibility with PS5 Pro and verify the exact console model family; do not assume a cover for another PS5 model will fit. Sony’s materials do not compare third-party products, sellers, prices or durability.
