But support is model- and app-specific: not every Chromebook runs every Android app. Microsoft’s former Amazon Appstore and Windows Subsystem for Android offering stopped being available in Microsoft Store on March 5, 2025, so it is no longer a current built-in Windows option.
Chromebook vs. Windows for Android apps: the key difference
On a supported Chromebook, you can install Android apps from Google Play. On Windows, Microsoft’s documented Amazon Appstore route through Windows Subsystem for Android is discontinued as a Microsoft Store offering. That makes a compatible Chromebook the more straightforward documented option for this particular use case; it does not establish that every Chromebook app will work or that no other Windows methods exist.
There is no official head-to-head benchmark in the cited documentation comparing Android app performance on Chromebook and Windows laptops. Choose based on whether your required apps and their hardware needs are supported, rather than assuming one platform is faster.
Does this Chromebook support Google Play?
Google Play is available on only some Chromebook models. Before buying, check the exact model and confirm that the Play Store option is present. Google’s instructions say to update ChromeOS, then open Settings → Apps → Manage Google Play preferences. If that option is missing, Google says the Chromebook does not work with Android apps. The Play Store and installed Android apps may be restricted to the first account signed in to the Chromebook. Apps from a phone or tablet do not automatically transfer; you download them again on the Chromebook.
Why can’t I download or run an Android app on my Chromebook?
Play Store access on a Chromebook does not guarantee access to every app. Google says an app may be unavailable because its developer has excluded Chromebooks, or because the model lacks a feature the app requires. For example, an app that needs GPS may not work on a Chromebook without GPS. Check Google Play Help’s Chromebook app availability guidance and the app’s own requirements.

Also consider how the app is meant to be used. Some apps may work best with a touchscreen, stylus, auto-rotate, a particular display resolution, enough memory, or a constant internet connection. Android apps install locally and use Chromebook storage; Google notes that app sizes and resource needs vary. Its guidance for deploying apps in schools recommends at least 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage, but that is school-deployment advice—not a universal consumer minimum or a Chromebook-versus-Windows performance result. Is the Amazon Appstore still available on Windows?
Not through Microsoft Store: Microsoft says the Amazon Appstore and Windows Subsystem for Android were no longer available there starting March 5, 2025. The date concerns Microsoft Store availability of that offering; it should not be read as proof that every third-party Android app method for Windows is unavailable. Microsoft’s older setup guidance described Windows 11, x64 or ARM64 architecture, Virtual Machine Platform, an Amazon account, and region limits; it recommended 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage for that former offering. - List your must-have apps. Look for each one in Google Play and verify support on the exact Chromebook model, not just on Chromebooks in general.
- Check required hardware and input. Confirm that the laptop has functions an app needs, such as GPS, and consider whether touch or stylus input is important to how you will use it.
- Allow for storage and resource needs. Android apps install locally, so account for their storage use and the Chromebook’s available space. Review each app’s requirements; do not treat Google’s school-deployment memory and storage guidance as a consumer-wide threshold.
- Ask about management restrictions. On a work- or school-managed Chromebook, check with the administrator whether the Play Store and app installation are enabled. Administrators can block Play Store access.
- Compare current options, not old setup instructions. Microsoft’s former Amazon Appstore/Windows Subsystem for Android route ended as a Microsoft Store offering on March 5, 2025. Evaluate any Windows alternative separately rather than assuming that route remains built in.
Google Chromebook Help notes that “To make Android apps appear on your Chromebook as they do on your tablet or Android phone, you can change the size of the apps.” That display adjustment may help tailor the experience, but it does not change whether an app is compatible with the device.
