If Android apps feel slow on a Chromebook, start by updating ChromeOS and the apps, restarting, and freeing storage. These low-risk steps address common software and storage problems. Google also documents an optional Hyper-Threading setting for some devices, but warns that enabling it may pose a security risk; it is not a guaranteed speed boost.
Check that your Chromebook supports Android apps
The Google Play Store is available only on some Chromebooks, and some Android apps may not work with particular Chromebook models. Check Google’s Chromebook app support instructions and look under Settings > Apps for Google Play Store. If the device is managed by a school or workplace, an administrator may have restricted access.
If Play Store is missing or just one app is affected, confirm support and compatibility before changing performance settings. A setting cannot fix an app that is unavailable or incompatible with the device.
Update ChromeOS, restart, and update apps
Install ChromeOS updates
Open Settings > About ChromeOS and check for updates. Install any available update, then restart when prompted; ChromeOS updates finish after the restart. See Google’s ChromeOS update instructions.

Restart and check the connection
If the Play Store will not load, open, or is crashing, restart the Chromebook and check that it has a working internet connection. Google lists these among its recommended Play Store troubleshooting steps: Play Store troubleshooting on Chromebooks.
Update Android apps
Open Google Play and install available updates for the affected apps. App updates can address app-specific problems, while a ChromeOS update covers the Chromebook’s operating system. Google’s Chromebook app instructions explain app updates and settings.

Free up Chromebook storage
Google says low disk space can cause problems when using Android apps. Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management to review space use. To clear room, remove files you no longer need, clear browsing data or download history, uninstall unused apps, or remove unused local user accounts. See Google’s storage cleanup instructions.
Storage cleanup is most relevant when the Chromebook is low on space; it is not a general guarantee that every app will run faster.

Consider Hyper-Threading only if the Chromebook offers it
Google documents a Hyper-Threading option that may increase performance in apps and games on relevant CPUs. It is not available on every Chromebook, and Google does not promise a particular improvement on an individual device. The option requires ChromeOS 74 or later, according to Google’s performance-setting instructions.
Important: Hyper-Threading is turned off by default to protect you since it may be a security risk. Consider the tradeoff before changing it; this is an optional setting, not a routine first step.

- In Chrome, open
chrome://flags#scheduler-configuration. - If the option is available, choose Enables Hyper-Threading on relevant CPUs.
- Restart the Chromebook to apply the change.
To undo it, return to the same flag, set it to Default, and restart. If the flag is absent, do not assume the feature is supported on that Chromebook.

Some supported, newly downloaded Android apps can be displayed in phone, tablet, or custom sizes. This changes the app’s presentation on screen; Google does not describe it as a processing-performance setting. Use resizing if an app’s layout is awkward, not as a fix for lag.

If the problem continues
- Play Store itself fails: restart, confirm internet access, and check for a ChromeOS update.
- One app is slow or unstable: update it, then check whether it is compatible with the Chromebook.
- Several apps have trouble and storage is low: remove unneeded files or apps using Storage management.
- You are considering extended updates: check the consequences first. On eligible older Chromebooks, opting in removes Android apps and the Play Store, and Google says the process cannot be reversed. Details are in Google’s extended updates support information.
