In The Outlast Trials, follow the objective shown for your current run rather than relying on a memorized route. The broad task may be familiar, but routes, item availability and enemy placements can vary. For progression, use the live in-game board: Red Barrels’ March 2024 description of the Genesis-to-Rebirth route is useful context, but it does not guarantee today’s program requirements.
What to do in your first Trial
Start by reading the current objective and its prompts. A Trial is a longer task; an MK-Challenge is a shorter therapy using a modified or redesigned portion of an existing map, according to Red Barrels’ Early Access explainer. Treat the objective as your run-specific plan, and use map knowledge to recognize patterns rather than assume every item or turn will be in the same place.
Learn the task, then adapt to the run
The Epic Games Store’s beginner guide says the spaces remain the same while routes, available items and enemy placements can vary. Its “Kill the Snitch” example illustrates the distinction: the main task can remain recognizable even when the route, symbols or key locations differ. Look for the current prompt and clues, and revise your approach when this run differs from the last.
How progression works
Red Barrels’ March 2024 1.0 launch announcement described Program Genesis as the “Path to Rebirth” and the straightforward campaign route to rebirth. Under the rules announced then, players needed 20 Release Tokens to access Release Protocol; a Trial awarded two tokens and an MK-Challenge one. The same announcement said tokens could be earned in Trials across Programs, Weekly Programs and Special Events, and that replays still awarded full XP and Murkoff Dollars.

That announcement also said Program X unlocked after one Reborn and Program Ultra after three. These are dated publisher statements, not a guarantee of the live October 2026 requirements. Red Barrels’ official game page lists newer updates, so check the in-game board for the programs, events and unlock conditions currently available to your account.
Choose a Rig for the problem you need to solve
Rigs are reusable, cooldown-limited tools, not permanent upgrades. The Epic guide names Stun, Blind, Heal and X-Ray; their value depends on the threat, your team and the current build. Read the in-game descriptions before choosing, since balance and effects can change.

This is not a universal ranking: the guide’s advice is tactical guidance, not proof of a current meta. Pick for the run and the people playing it.
Amps and Prescriptions: check effects before spending
Amps are equippable perks, while Prescriptions provide passive boosts, according to the Epic guide. It gives examples involving noise reduction, sanity effects, extra survival margin, stamina, inventory space and faster door breaking. Those names and effects can be version-sensitive. Before spending resources, read the current descriptions in your game and choose an effect that addresses a problem you actually encounter.

Solo or co-op?
Both are legitimate ways to learn. Red Barrels’ 1.0 announcement said its onboarding and difficulty adjustments were intended to support solo and group players. The practical trade-off is how you handle coordination and recovery.

The Epic guide recommends Blind as a solo escape option and notes that it can also help a group revive someone near an enemy; it describes Heal as useful team support. Treat those as situational suggestions, then compare them with the current Rig descriptions and your team’s needs.

A practical survival checklist
- Read the current objective and follow its prompts instead of assuming a memorized route applies.
- Expect familiar map spaces but possible changes to routes, item availability and enemy placements.
- Use your Rig when it addresses an immediate need; remember that it has a cooldown.
- In co-op, agree who handles each objective task and use item trading or distractions deliberately.
- Before investing in Amps or Prescriptions, confirm their effects in the current game.
- Check the live board for current programs and unlock requirements; older announcements may not reflect a later update.
