For smooth 1440p OLED gaming, set the display to its native 2560×1440 resolution and highest available refresh rate, enable the monitor’s variable refresh rate (VRR) feature and the matching NVIDIA G-SYNC or AMD FreeSync option, then tune each game’s graphics settings to the frame rate your PC can sustain. The best settings depend on the monitor, GPU, connection, and game; a high refresh-rate panel cannot make the GPU render faster.
Set up the monitor and Windows first
- Use a supported connection. Connect the PC to an HDMI or DisplayPort input that supports the resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR combination you intend to use. Check the monitor manual and GPU specifications: there is no single port or cable answer that applies to every setup. RTINGS explains how connection bandwidth affects supported refresh modes.
- Select native resolution and maximum refresh. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose 2560×1440 and the highest refresh rate available. The exact labels may vary by Windows version. A high-refresh display may not select its top mode automatically.
- If the top refresh rate is missing, troubleshoot the signal path. Check the monitor input, cable and adapters, GPU output, graphics driver, and selected signal format. Do not assume the panel itself is limited until those are checked.
- Check HDR separately. If enabling HDR removes a refresh-rate option or changes the available color format, the chosen signal may be constrained by bandwidth or configuration. RTINGS distinguishes maximum refresh at 8-bit and 10-bit signal depths in its testing; the result depends on the display and connection.
Enable VRR for your graphics card
VRR synchronizes the display’s refresh timing with the GPU’s frame output. It can reduce tearing and stutter when frame delivery varies, but it does not increase the number of frames the GPU renders. Enable the feature both in the monitor’s own menu and in the graphics software.
NVIDIA GeForce
Open NVIDIA Control Panel and enable G-SYNC or G-SYNC Compatible in the G-SYNC setup section. In Manage 3D Settings, set Monitor Technology to G-SYNC/G-SYNC Compatible when that option is available, and select the highest available refresh rate. NVIDIA’s Control Panel help notes that G-SYNC Compatible displays are VRR displays validated by NVIDIA. Compatibility depends on the particular display and GPU; support should not be assumed for every older combination.
AMD Radeon
In AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition, enable AMD FreeSync for the compatible display. AMD’s FreeSync enablement FAQ describes the software steps and the technology’s use of display standards such as DisplayPort Adaptive-Sync. AMD’s FreeSync technology page describes low-framerate compensation for supported tiers, but the exact range depends on the monitor and its certification.

Tune game settings to the frame rate you can sustain
Start at native 2560×1440 for a sharp image. If the GPU cannot maintain a frame rate that feels smooth in a particular game, reduce its most demanding graphics options until performance is steadier. The specific options to change vary by game, and there is no universal graphics preset or frame-rate cap that is best for every PC and monitor.
- Use the game’s performance or frame-rate display, if available, to see how consistently it delivers frames during the scenes you actually play.
- Prioritize stable performance over a peak number: a 360Hz or 480Hz panel only displays frames the GPU supplies.
- Do not treat refresh rate, frame rate, and connection bandwidth as interchangeable. The monitor must support the mode, the GPU must render frames, and the connection must carry the selected resolution, refresh rate, and signal depth.
As a reference for why refresh rate matters to motion and latency, RTINGS calculates that 240Hz corresponds to a 4.17 ms frame interval and a theoretical minimum input lag of 2.08 ms at that refresh rate. What to do if OLED VRR flickers
Some OLED monitors can visibly flicker when VRR is active and the frame rate changes, with the effect especially noticeable in dark scenes. RTINGS reports this behavior on the ASUS ROG Strix OLED XG27ACDNG and LG 27GX790A-B; it is a model-specific caveat, not proof that every OLED monitor will behave the same way. First check for current monitor firmware and graphics drivers, then compare the affected game with other content.
Turning VRR off can help establish whether it is involved, but it is a diagnostic trade-off: tearing or stutter may return. The cited reviews do not establish one fix that works across OLED models.

What high-refresh 1440p OLED examples show
Two independently reviewed 27-inch 1440p OLED monitors illustrate why headline refresh rate alone is not enough to predict behavior:

These are examples, not universal recommendations. The ASUS review also finds it strongest in dark-room image quality and notes that ambient light raises its black levels. When comparing displays, consider native resolution and size, refresh available over your chosen connection, HDR signal support, VRR compatibility and behavior, and how the panel performs in your room—not just its advertised refresh rate.
