Search an address in OFAC’s official tool
- Open OFAC Sanctions List Search.
- Paste the complete wallet address into the ID # field and run the search. OFAC FAQ 594 specifically directs users to enter the address hash in this field.
- If a result appears, open and inspect the record. Verify the full address and currency identifier, then review the associated entity and sanctions program details. OFAC uses labels such as “Digital Currency Address – XBT” or “Digital Currency Address – ETH”; the label indicates the currency associated with the listed address.
- Record the outcome precisely: an exact match appeared, or the address did not return an exact match in the official search at the time you checked.
OFAC describes a digital currency address as an alphanumeric identifier representing a potential destination for a transfer and associated with a wallet. An address is not the whole wallet, its owner, or a complete picture of a transaction’s sanctions risk. OFAC says listed addresses can be up to 256 characters.
Does OFAC use fuzzy matching for crypto addresses?
No. OFAC FAQ 594 says the ID # field does not use fuzzy logic for digital currency addresses, so it returns exact matches only. This differs from name searches: OFAC FAQ 246 explains that fuzzy logic applies to the name field, while other fields use character matching. Check that you entered the full address correctly; a partial, mistyped, or differently formatted string may not produce the listed exact match.
What does it mean if the search returns no results?
It means only that the address did not return an exact match in that search. It does not establish that the address is “clean,” that it is not sanctioned, or that a transaction involving it is permissible. OFAC warns that its digital currency address listings are “not likely to be exhaustive.” A listed-address lookup also does not establish who owns or controls an address, whether another party is involved, or whether there is indirect sanctions exposure.

What to do with a possible match
Do not rely on a search-result label alone. Compare the address string and currency identifier with the record, and read the listed entity and program information. OFAC says program codes indicate how a true hit should be treated, and cautions that Sanctions List Search is not a substitute for appropriate due diligence.
A possible match or a decision about a specific transaction may require further review of the parties, ownership, control, and transaction context. This article explains the lookup, not whether a particular transfer is legally allowed. Rules and obligations depend on the facts and applicable jurisdiction.

One-time lookup versus ongoing screening

For businesses, OFAC’s virtual currency industry guidance discusses screening customer information, screening transactions, and ongoing sanctions screening. The right process depends on the organization’s activity and risk; a one-time address search is not a substitute for that broader program.
Check the list’s currency and date
Sanctions lists change. OFAC’s search page provides the list update information, so check the live page when screening rather than relying on a previously recorded date or result. The SDN and Non-SDN lists can have different update dates. OFAC’s FAQ lists examples of currency identifiers including XBT, ETH, LTC, NEO, DASH, XRP, MIOTA, XMR, and PTR; these examples do not guarantee current coverage of every currency or blockchain.

Scope: OFAC is a U.S. sanctions authority
This method checks information published by the U.S. Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. It does not explain the rules or official search procedures of other countries or jurisdictions. If a U.S. person determines that they hold virtual currency that must be blocked, OFAC says they must deny all parties access and meet applicable requirements for holding and reporting blocked assets.
