To capture gameplay footage already recorded on VHS, play the tape in a working VCR and record its analog output through a compatible USB video capture device on your computer. Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to the digitizer, select that device in capture software, check the picture and sound, then record while the tape plays.

What you need to transfer a VHS recording

  • A working VHS VCR with video and audio outputs, plus the tape containing the gameplay.
  • A computer supported by the capture device and its recording software.
  • A USB analog video capture device with inputs that match the VCR. A computer cannot turn the VCR’s analog RCA output into a digital file on its own.
  • Matching cables. Composite video typically uses a yellow RCA plug for video and red and white plugs for stereo audio.

For an example of a compatible product type, Elgato describes its Video Capture device as supporting VCR capture to Mac or PC through composite RCA or S-Video inputs. Check the current operating-system support, inputs, video-standard compatibility, and software requirements for any device before buying; compatibility is not universal.

Connect the VCR to the capture device

  1. Turn off or pause playback while making the connections. Find the VCR’s video and audio outputs, not its inputs.
  2. For a composite connection, connect the VCR’s yellow video output to the capture device’s yellow video input, and connect red and white audio outputs to the corresponding audio inputs. Diamond’s VC500 installation guide also warns users to distinguish outputs from inputs.
  3. If both the VCR and capture device have S-Video connectors, you can use S-Video for video and the red and white RCA cables for audio. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s Technical Bulletin 31 describes S-Video as providing a better picture than composite in its S-VHS connection setup. Do not try this option if either device lacks an S-Video jack.
  4. Connect the capture device to the computer’s USB port. The Elgato Video Capture Quick Start Guide describes connecting the source and USB digitizer, installing the application, and following its setup wizard.

The basic signal path is VCR video and audio out → matching capture-device inputs → USB → recording software. The government bulletin also documents a more involved chain using a time-base corrector (TBC), but it describes direct VCR-to-digitizer capture as well. A TBC is an optional advanced component, not a prerequisite for every transfer.

Record the tape with capture software

Set up the device and source

  1. Install the software supplied or recommended for your capture device, then confirm the computer recognizes it. Follow the device maker’s setup instructions if its application has a wizard.
  2. In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source, choose the digitizer, and select the input you connected—such as composite or S-Video, where supported. The available inputs depend on the hardware. See Hauppauge’s OBS instructions for its supported devices, or Diamond’s VC500 guide for a product-specific OBS example.
  3. Set a save location and recording format in the software. Confirm where recordings are saved before starting a long capture.

Check playback, then capture

  1. Press play on the VCR and inspect the software preview. Confirm that video appears and that the audio meter responds.
  2. If the preview is blank or silent, check that you selected the connected input, the cables run from VCR outputs to capture-device inputs, the correct audio device is selected, and the software has any necessary permissions. Consult the current troubleshooting instructions for your specific device; Diamond’s guide includes examples of these checks.
  3. Start recording in the software, then play or continue playing the tape. Capture happens in real time as the tape plays. Stop the recording when the desired segment ends.
  4. Open the saved file and check its orientation, aspect ratio, sound, and audio-video sync. For a full recording, allow the tape to play for its full duration.

Choose settings for your device and tape

There is no single capture setting that applies to every digitizer, computer, and regional video standard. Follow the device maker’s instructions and confirm that the device supports the format of the tape. For example, Diamond’s VC500/VC500SE guide, updated 2026-09-29, gives 720×480 at 30 fps as an example for that product; it is not a universal setting. Elgato lists its own output resolutions and formats and says its device detects NTSC, SECAM, PAL, and PAL/60. Those are product-specific capabilities, not a guarantee that another adapter supports the same standards.

Before recording a whole tape, make a short test capture. Review the image shape and sound, and make sure the file plays correctly. This catches a wrong input or recording setup before you spend the time capturing a longer segment.

When to consider a different setup

Use the direct connection for a basic transfer

A working VCR, matching analog capture inputs, USB connection, and compatible software are enough for the basic workflow. An HDMI capture card by itself does not accept a VCR’s composite RCA output; the analog signal needs a compatible capture device or an appropriate conversion step.

Consider signal conditioning only for a specific need

A TBC belongs to a more advanced signal chain, and the Canadian Conservation Institute documents both direct capture and a chain with one. The documented setup does not make a TBC a mandatory purchase for an ordinary transfer.

Use a transfer service if you cannot capture at home

If you do not have a working VCR or compatible computer setup, a professional transfer service may be an alternative. Availability and service quality vary by location, so check local providers and the formats they deliver.
