Colocation is usually the better fit when you need to run your own server hardware but want a third party to provide the building, power, cooling, physical security and connectivity. Cloud infrastructure is usually a stronger fit when you want to consume compute, storage or managed services without buying and maintaining the underlying servers. The choice depends on your workload, operating model, network and location requirements, and full lifecycle costs—not on a universal price or performance winner.

What is the difference between hyperscale, colocation and cloud?

These terms describe different things. Hyperscale describes very large scale. Colocation is a facility service: you place equipment you own or control in a third-party data center. Cloud is a way to consume infrastructure and services from a provider rather than operate the physical servers yourself. A hyperscale company can use colocation, and a colocation facility can host hyperscale tenants.

Colocation: your equipment, someone else’s facility

In colocation, the provider typically supplies space and facility infrastructure such as power, cooling, physical security and network bandwidth. Your organization remains responsible for its servers and the software stack running on them. This can reduce the burden of building and maintaining a data-center facility while preserving direct responsibility for hardware choices and operations. AWS also notes potential trade-offs: reaching multiple geographies can be difficult, and costs can grow as requirements expand. AWS’s data-center overview describes these distinctions and trade-offs.

Cloud: provider infrastructure and services

With cloud infrastructure, you rent compute, storage or higher-level services rather than buying and maintaining the physical servers. Depending on the service, the provider handles more of the provisioning and infrastructure maintenance, while you configure and operate your workloads. Cloud can reduce hardware procurement, maintenance and capacity-planning work, and offer on-demand access with usage and payment options. The division of responsibility, security controls and compliance scope vary by provider and service; verify the terms for the specific services you plan to use. See AWS’s cloud deployment strategies and its data-center overview.

Hyperscale is not a deployment alternative to colocation

There is no single universal threshold for calling a facility or environment hyperscale in the cited material. In a 2022 article about AWS networking, AWS wrote that an environment could be considered hyperscale once it supported “thousands of application endpoints and tens or hundreds of gigabits of traffic per second.” That is an AWS-specific practical example, not an industry-wide standard. AWS’s article on designing hyperscale VPC networks gives that context.

How do the two options compare for a workload?

Decision factor Colocation Cloud infrastructure
Control and responsibility You operate your hardware and software; the facility provider supplies building infrastructure and related support. The provider operates the underlying infrastructure to varying degrees; your responsibilities depend on the service and configuration.
Capacity and scaling You forecast hardware and space needs, procure equipment, and confirm the provider can expand in the locations you need. On-demand resources may suit variable demand, provided the required services and capacity are available in the regions you need.
Cost over time Evaluate hardware purchases and replacement, facility charges, power, network, staffing and contract commitments. Evaluate usage, data movement, service mix, support and commitment terms. The cited sources do not provide workload-matched prices to establish which model costs less.
Location and connectivity A suitable facility may put equipment nearer users, partners or data sources; confirm network options and geographic reach. Check that provider regions and interconnection options meet latency, data-location and network requirements.
Compliance and operations Assess the facility’s controls alongside the controls for your hardware, software and operating practices. Confirm that the exact services and regions meet your requirements; a provider’s general security or compliance claims do not establish that every service does.
Hybrid placement Keep components on owned equipment where required or appropriate, while planning how they communicate with cloud services. Use cloud services for components that benefit from them, accounting for connectivity and data movement between environments.

When does colocation make more sense?

Colocation is worth evaluating when the organization wants to retain ownership and day-to-day operation of its server hardware but does not want to provide the facility itself. It may also suit workloads with specific hardware or placement needs, if a suitable facility and network path are available.

  • A facility near users, partners or data sources would help, and its connectivity meets your needs.
  • Your operating and compliance requirements can be met by combining the facility’s controls with your own hardware and software controls.

Do not assume colocation automatically simplifies operations: you still need to manage equipment and the software stack, and geographic expansion can require additional facilities and network planning.

When does cloud make more sense?

Cloud is worth evaluating when you want provider-operated infrastructure or managed services and your workload can use the services available in the required regions. It can reduce the work of procuring and maintaining hardware and planning fixed capacity, but those benefits depend on the chosen services and the workload’s usage pattern.

Is colocation cheaper than cloud?

There is no supported universal answer: the cited sources do not compare prices for equivalent workloads. A useful comparison must cover the same workload, expected utilization, locations, network traffic, service levels and time horizon.

Can colocation connect to AWS?

Yes. AWS documents AWS Direct Connect connectivity at colocation campus locations, allowing an organization to connect its network in a colocation facility to AWS. Whether a particular campus offers a suitable connection, and what the arrangement costs or requires, depends on the location and service options. Check the relevant facility and AWS details before designing around it. See AWS Direct Connect Layer 1 Explained.

This kind of connection can support a hybrid design: some components remain on customer-operated equipment in colocation while others use cloud services. The architecture still needs a plan for network capacity, latency, data movement and failure handling.

Does colocation host hyperscale companies?

Yes. Uptime Institute’s surveys show that hyperscale tenants are present among the colocation providers surveyed. In the Global Data Center Survey 2025, 62% of surveyed colocation providers reported hosting hyperscale technology companies (chart n=151). The report’s weighted average indicated that 44% of facility capacity was dedicated to those companies. In the Global Data Center Survey 2024, 61% of surveyed providers reported hosting hyperscale tenants (n=182). These are survey results, not a census of all providers or global colocation capacity, and the different samples do not establish a definitive market trend.

Large-scale development also does not guarantee that a proposed site will be built or fully used. In an October 2023 analysis, Uptime Institute identified proposals for 26 mega data centers since 2021, each with planned power provision above 500 MW. It conditionally estimated that if all were built to planned capacity and operated at half projected capacity, annual use would be about 45 TWh. That was a projection about proposals—not measured consumption—and Uptime Institute noted that financing, connectivity, power and permissions could keep some projects from being built or reaching capacity. See Uptime Institute’s analysis of hyperscale colocation campuses.

How to choose for your workload

  1. Set the operating boundary. Decide whether your team must own and operate the physical hardware or can rely on provider-operated infrastructure and services.
  2. Describe demand and growth. Estimate current and future capacity, how much demand varies, and whether you can procure and place equipment in advance.
  3. Map locations and network paths. Identify users, partners and data sources; check facility locations or cloud regions, available connections, latency needs and expected data movement.
  4. Translate requirements into controls. List hardware, facility, security and compliance needs, then verify them against the specific facility or cloud services under consideration.
  5. Compare lifecycle costs on equal terms. Include the costs and commitments on both sides over the same period and for the same workload assumptions.
  6. Consider a hybrid placement. Keep components on owned equipment where needed and use cloud services where they fit, but account for the network and operational work between them.
