Florida and three other states sued TP-Link Systems Inc. on October 6, 2026, accusing the company of misleading consumers about router security and its China ties, according to contemporaneous reporting. Those are allegations, not a court finding that TP-Link lied or that every TP-Link router is unsafe. TP-Link says it stands behind its products. For owners, the practical question is whether their exact router model is supported, updated, and configured securely.

Why is Florida suing TP-Link?

Law360 reported that Florida, Montana, Nebraska, and Iowa filed suits against TP-Link Systems Inc. on October 6, 2026. The report says the states allege that TP-Link concealed China links and promoted routers as secure despite vulnerabilities. The Florida complaint itself was not available for review, so its precise claims, legal counts, and requested remedies cannot be stated here. Law360’s report describes the multi-state suits.

Florida had already begun looking into TP-Link. On December 2, 2025, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced an investigative subpoena concerning the company’s cybersecurity practices, supply-chain infrastructure, handling of U.S. consumer data, and support for product-security claims. The Attorney General’s Office said the investigation was ongoing and that issuing the subpoena was not a determination of wrongdoing. Uthmeier said, “Floridians deserve to know the truth about the security of the products they bring into their homes.” Florida Attorney General’s announcement

Announcements from Montana and Nebraska offer context about those states’ cases, but do not establish what Florida’s complaint says. Montana’s Attorney General described its suit as alleging misleading statements about device security and China ties; Nebraska’s Attorney General described allegations concerning router safety, privacy, overseas exploitation, and China relationships. Are TP-Link routers safe?

The lawsuits do not establish that all TP-Link routers are unsafe. Separately, the U.S. Department of Justice said Russian military intelligence actors exploited known vulnerabilities in thousands of TP-Link routers worldwide since at least 2024, stealing credentials and using compromised devices to redirect DNS requests. That is evidence of a specific exploitation campaign; it does not prove that every model is vulnerable, that China accessed the data, or that TP-Link knowingly misrepresented its products. DOJ’s April 7, 2026 announcement

TP-Link’s statement, listed October 6, 2026, says: “TP-Link stands behind the security, quality, and performance of its networking products and fully complies with all U.S. regulatory requirements.” This is the company’s position, not an independent security assessment. Do I need to replace my TP-Link router?

Not solely because the brand is named in a lawsuit. Make the decision using the exact model’s support status, firmware, and configuration. DOJ’s guidance for small-office and home-office routers recommends replacing devices that have reached end-of-life or end-of-support, installing the latest available firmware, verifying DNS resolvers, and reviewing firewall rules for unwanted remote-management exposure. DOJ’s router guidance

  • Keep and update: The exact model remains supported, the latest model-specific firmware is installed, and settings do not expose unnecessary remote access.
  • Replace: The manufacturer identifies the model as end-of-life or end-of-support, so it no longer receives security updates.
  • Investigate further: You have evidence of compromise or a vulnerability notice that names your specific model and firmware version. Follow the manufacturer’s remediation guidance rather than assuming a general brand-level claim applies.

What should I do if my router has a security vulnerability?

  1. Identify the exact model and hardware revision. Check the label on the router and use the manufacturer’s support page for that precise device.
  2. Check support and end-of-life status. If the model is no longer supported, plan to replace it; a device without security updates cannot receive a fix for newly discovered flaws.
  3. Install the latest available firmware. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact model, then confirm the router reports the updated version.
  4. Verify DNS settings. Review the configured DNS resolvers in the router’s settings and check that they are the resolvers you intend to use.
  5. Review firewall and remote-management settings. Disable remote management if you do not need it, and check that firewall rules do not expose management services unnecessarily.

These steps address general router hygiene recommended by DOJ; they are not a finding that a particular TP-Link model has been compromised.

What the lawsuit does—and does not—establish

The state cases, TP-Link’s response, and DOJ’s account concern related but distinct issues. The lawsuits contain consumer-protection allegations; TP-Link disputes the implied criticism by standing behind its products; DOJ described Russian actors exploiting known router vulnerabilities. The available sources do not establish a court finding of deception or a security conclusion covering every TP-Link model.
