You can record console gameplay to VHS and play it back if the console’s video and audio can reach a VCR’s recording input, the VCR can record to the tape format you have, and the playback deck supports that recording standard. Consoles with composite A/V can connect directly; HDMI-only consoles need an active HDMI-to-composite converter.
What you need for a console-to-VHS setup
- A console output that matches the VCR’s recording input, or a suitable converter between them.
- A record-capable VCR with a working LINE IN or AV IN connection.
- A blank VHS tape and a playback VCR compatible with the tape’s recording standard.
Composite A/V is the familiar three-plug connection: yellow carries video, white carries left audio, and red carries right audio. Sony describes composite as standard-definition analog video. Sony’s composite connection guidance explains the plug roles.
How to record gameplay to VHS
- Check the console’s outputs. If it has composite A/V, use its yellow video and red/white audio outputs. HDMI-only consoles do not directly provide this analog signal.
- Connect the console to the VCR’s input. Connect video to video and left/right audio to the matching audio inputs on the VCR, labeled LINE IN or AV IN. Do not connect to the VCR’s output; that is used to send a signal to a television or display.
- Choose the VCR’s line input. Select the input that the cables are connected to, rather than an antenna channel. Sony’s instructions for connecting A/V equipment to a VCR likewise direct users to connect to LINE IN and tune the VCR to that input: Sony VCR connection instructions.
- Insert a blank tape and start recording. Then start the game. VCR recording controls differ by model, so follow the deck’s manual for the exact record and stop controls. Sony’s recording procedure includes inserting a blank tape before recording. Sony’s VCR guidance covers the connection and recording workflow.
If the console only has HDMI
Use an active HDMI-to-composite converter that accepts HDMI and outputs composite video plus analog audio. HDMI is digital and composite is analog, so a passive cable with HDMI on one end and RCA plugs on the other does not perform the required conversion. Confirm the converter’s specifications and the console and VCR manuals before relying on a particular combination. The available guidance establishes the digital-versus-analog distinction, but does not validate any specific converter, console compatibility, scaling behavior, or added lag.
A VCR with only an antenna/coaxial input does not offer the matching composite line input described above. A compatible modulator or another signal path may be needed, but the required configuration depends on the equipment; check the VCR manual before connecting anything.

How to play the tape back
Stop or rewind the tape, then play it in a VCR that supports the tape format and recording standard. Standards can vary by region and model. For example, Sony’s guidance for one DVD/VCR combo specifies NTSC-recorded tapes for playback on that model; that requirement should not be generalized to every VCR. Check the playback deck’s manual for its supported standard. Sony’s model-specific playback guidance is an example.
Connect the playback VCR’s output to the television or display’s compatible input, and select that input on the display. If the picture or sound is poor, the tape, cables, or condition of an older deck may be factors; the exact cause depends on the equipment.

Important compatibility and copy-protection limits
Console gameplay is different from protected media being passed through the setup. Sony’s dubbing guidance says copy-protected media is not supported. That does not establish whether a particular HDMI converter or recording chain will accept every source, so check the manuals and specifications for the actual devices. Sony’s recording guidance.
Before setting up, verify the console output, VCR recording input, tape standard, and playback VCR as one complete chain. If any link is incompatible, a successful recording or playback is not assured.
