Why 7,000mAh does not guarantee a particular runtime
Battery capacity is only one part of battery life. Two phones with the same rated capacity can behave differently because their hardware, software, screens, network conditions and typical workloads differ. Google notes that battery life depends on the type of device, while Apple points to usage and software and hardware features as factors. Without a specific phone and a defined usage profile, there is no reliable screen-on-time or days-per-charge estimate to give.
Find the source of the drain before changing settings
Check the phone’s battery-usage screen
On iPhone, open Settings > Battery and review app and system activity alongside the periods when charge fell. On Android, open the device’s battery screen and identify apps or activities using the most power; menu names and available details vary by manufacturer and model. The largest item is a useful lead, not automatic proof that an app is malfunctioning: high use can reflect deliberate activities such as navigation or video.
Look for background activity, weak coverage and recent updates
Apple identifies background activity, notifications and low or absent cellular coverage as possible contributors to battery use. If an app is unexpectedly prominent, check whether it is working in the background when you do not need it to. If drain began after a software update, allow for the possibility that update-related work is temporarily affecting battery life before making broad changes. Google and Apple’s guidance emphasizes identifying the pattern on the device rather than applying one universal fix: Google Android battery guidance and Apple’s iPhone battery-drain guidance.

Make low-disruption changes first
Reduce screen power without making the phone hard to use
- Shorten screen timeout or auto-lock. Choose a period that still works for reading and other hands-on tasks, but avoids leaving the display lit when you set the phone down.
- Use a comfortable, lower brightness. Automatic or adaptive brightness can help avoid running the display brighter than needed; you can still raise it temporarily in bright surroundings.
- Try dark theme if the phone supports it. Its effect depends on the device and display, so treat it as an option rather than a guaranteed saving.

Adjust apps selectively
If one app is using unusually high power, review its battery or background-use controls instead of restricting every app. Before limiting background activity for an important messaging, work or safety app, consider whether it needs to run in the background: optimization can delay notifications or other updates. Keep useful connectivity, location and notifications available
There is no need to treat location, Bluetooth, mobile data or notifications as features that must always be disabled. Target the app or circumstance that is consuming power:
- Location: Review which apps can access location in the background and limit access only where it fits your needs. Turning off Location access altogether can stop some apps and features from working, so it is a situational choice, not a default fix.
- Connectivity: Turn off a hotspot when nobody needs it. Use Wi-Fi when convenient; Apple says Wi-Fi and stronger cellular signal can reduce network-related power use. On supported iPhones, 5G Auto can use 5G when it provides a noticeable benefit rather than relying on it continuously.
- High-demand activities: If you need more charge for the rest of the day, reduce prolonged GPS navigation, streaming or other sustained activity when practical. That addresses the workload rather than removing an everyday feature from the phone.

Use adaptive and low-power modes with their trade-offs in mind
Adaptive modes
Where available, adaptive battery features can manage power around your usage. Google says Pixel Adaptive Battery learns how you use the phone and may reduce performance or delay notifications. Apple says Adaptive Power on supported iPhones can make adjustments such as slightly lowering brightness and limiting background activity. Availability, behavior and defaults depend on the model and operating-system version; consult the phone maker’s current instructions before relying on a setting.
Battery Saver and Low Power Mode
These modes are useful as an optional fallback on a day when charge is running low, but they can restrict background activity, connections, visual effects or refresh rate. If you need an app to update or notify you promptly, check how the mode affects it. They are not a substitute for diagnosing an app or usage pattern when your goal is to keep everyday functions available.

Keep the phone cool
Heat can increase battery drain and damage the battery. If the phone is hot, reduce the activity or conditions causing it to heat up and let it cool; changing a charge limit will not solve a demanding app that is consuming power right now. Check battery health if runtime has declined over time
Lithium-ion batteries chemically age and gradually lose capacity. If the phone’s battery-health screen reports that service is needed, follow the manufacturer’s service route rather than expecting app-setting changes to restore worn capacity. Apple explains battery aging, charge limits and optimized charging here: Apple battery and performance guidance.
Use charging features for long-term care, not today’s app drain
Charge limits and optimized charging are intended to reduce long-term battery wear. They can be useful for battery care, but they do not identify or fix an app or weak-signal condition draining the current charge. Feature names and availability vary by device.
A practical order for making changes
- Open the battery-usage screen and note the apps or system activity associated with the drain.
- Check for plausible causes such as frequent display use, a background-heavy app, poor coverage, sustained navigation or recent update activity.
- Try shorter screen timeout and comfortable brightness; then address a specific app’s background use if that will not disrupt notifications you need.
- Keep location and connectivity enabled where they serve a purpose, while changing an unnecessary hotspot, an app’s background access or a high-demand activity when appropriate.
- Use an adaptive mode if your model supports it and its notification or performance trade-offs suit you; reserve Battery Saver or Low Power Mode for times when those restrictions are acceptable.
- If reduced runtime persists despite ordinary use, check battery health and the phone maker’s service guidance.
Settings and feature support vary across Android makers, Android versions and iPhone models. Google notes that some Android steps depend on the device and Android 13 or later, while some Pixel steps require Android 14 or later. Apple’s guidance and Adaptive Power support also depend on model and software. Use the manufacturer’s current support page for the exact path on your phone.
