Fossil bones can reveal two different kinds of age: how old an animal was when it died, and how long ago it lived. Microscopic growth lines in some bones can help estimate an individual’s age and growth pattern. Rock layers and, when suitable materials are available, radiometric dating help place the fossil in geological time. Bone anatomy and growth patterns also contribute to evolutionary explanations—but only when compared with other fossils and geological evidence.
Two meanings of “age”
When scientists discuss the age of a fossil, they may mean either the animal’s age at death or the fossil’s age in Earth history. These are separate questions, answered with different evidence. Growth structures in bone can help estimate the animal’s life stage; geology and dating methods establish when it lived.
How bone can show an animal’s age and growth
Reading microscopic growth lines
Paleontologists can cut and prepare a thin section of bone for examination under a microscope. In some specimens, lines formed as growth slowed or paused are preserved in the bone. Counting readable lines can help estimate the animal’s age at death, while the spacing between them can offer clues about growth rate and whether the animal was still growing. The American Museum of Natural History’s discussion of growth in fossil bones cautions that not every bone preserves a complete, readable series; a large limb bone that fossilizes well may not be the best record for age estimation.
Why the method depends on the specimen
Growth-line interpretation requires suitable bone tissue, preparation, and careful reading. It is not simply a matter of counting marks on any fossil surface. A 2008 U.S. Geological Survey protocol, for example, describes skeletochronology for estimating the age of anurans—frogs and toads—from lines in phalange cross-sections. That protocol illustrates the method for a particular group; it should not be treated as a universal procedure for every fossil animal.

How scientists establish when a fossil lived
Relative dating: placing fossils in order
In an undisturbed sequence of sedimentary rock, lower layers are generally older than the layers above them. A fossil’s position in those layers can therefore establish its relative age: it came before or after fossils found in other layers. Comparing rock strata and characteristic fossils can also help correlate finds from separate locations. Relative dating orders events but does not, by itself, assign a numerical date. The American Museum of Natural History explains how fossil dating techniques use geological context.
Numerical dating: using suitable natural clocks
Radiometric dating estimates numerical ages from predictable radioactive decay, but the appropriate method depends on the material and the timescale. Scientists may date suitable rock associated with a fossil, such as a volcanic layer above or below it, rather than the fossil bone itself. Other materials require other methods. As the Smithsonian Human Origins Program’s dating overview explains, carbon-14 has a half-life of 5,730 years and is useful for suitable, comparatively recent organic remains. It is not a way to date the bones of non-avian dinosaurs, which lived millions of years ago.

The Smithsonian gives Lucy’s skeleton an age estimate of about 3.18 million years, describing how biostratigraphic evidence first provided an age range that was later constrained by absolute dating. That figure is an example of dating a particular find, not a universal level of precision for fossils.
| Approach | What it establishes | Evidence used |
|---|---|---|
| Relative dating | The order in which fossils or geological events occurred, not a numerical age. | Position in rock layers, correlations between strata, and characteristic fossils. |
| Radiometric or other numerical dating | An estimated numerical age or constraint when the material and method are suitable. | A natural clock in appropriate rock or other material; in many fossil settings, associated layers are dated rather than the bone. |
These approaches complement one another: geological context establishes relationships and order, while suitable numerical dating can narrow when an event occurred.

What bones contribute to evolutionary history
Anatomy and microscopic structure
Bone shape can reveal anatomical features and suggest how an animal used a body part. Microscopic structure can preserve clues about growth and life history. Researchers compare those traits among fossils and living animals, and interpret them alongside the geological contexts in which specimens were found. The American Museum of Natural History describes how bone microstructure can record biological information; its exhibit calls fossil bone a microscopic record of animal biology.
Development can help explain differences
Not every difference between fossil bones means that two specimens represent separate species. Age and development matter. The AMNH’s discussion of fossil evidence describes juvenile protoceratopsians with traits resembling adults of a related, more primitive species. Comparing individuals at different growth stages can therefore help researchers interpret variation and assess evolutionary relationships.

Why one bone rarely settles the story
A single bone can provide useful evidence, but it does not by itself establish a complete evolutionary lineage. Researchers test interpretations by comparing multiple specimens, anatomical traits, growth evidence, and geological context. Fossils arranged in chronological order may suggest relationships, but evolutionary conclusions depend on how well different lines of evidence fit together. The AMNH overview of paleontology explains how fossils help reveal biological change through time.

How to read claims about fossil bones
- Check which age is meant. An estimate of age at death is not the same as a date for when the fossil lived.
- Ask what was actually dated. A numerical date may come from rock associated with the fossil, not from the bone.
- Look for the specimen and method. Growth-line evidence depends on the bone sampled and how clearly its microscopic structures are preserved.
- Look for comparisons. An evolutionary interpretation is stronger when it accounts for other fossils and geological evidence, not just one isolated bone.
