If your taps stop working during a drought, check your water provider and local authority for the current outage and safety instructions, then ask where to get replacement water. Keep drinking and washing your hands; drought restrictions alone do not mean tap water is unsafe. Use bottled, boiled or treated water only as directed by the notice for your area.
What to do first when the water stops
- Check official alerts. Visit your water provider’s website or contact it directly, and check local-authority or public-health updates. Look for the affected area, estimated restoration time, any water-quality notice and the next update time. Sign up for alerts if the provider offers them.
- Report the problem. Tell the provider if you have no water, unusually low pressure, or a change in water colour or taste. A pressure or supply problem does not by itself establish whether the water is contaminated.
- Ask where alternative water is available. Contact the provider or local authority to find out whether water is being delivered or supplied at a collection point, when it will be available and what you need to bring. Arrangements and entitlements vary by location.
- Keep drinking and washing your hands. Do not deliberately cut your water intake to conserve. Follow local advice about use; if you cannot wash your hands, use hand sanitiser or wipes as appropriate.
- Arrange support if getting water is difficult. Contact your provider about its Priority Services Register or equivalent support if someone in your household needs extra help. Check on neighbours who may be isolated or unable to reach a collection point.
Is tap water safe during a drought outage?
Follow the water provider’s and health authority’s instructions for your area rather than assuming the water is safe or unsafe. Drought restrictions, including hosepipe bans, are conservation measures; they do not on their own mean tap water is unsafe. UK government drought guidance advises continuing to use tap water unless told otherwise: UK drought guidance.
If there is no safety notice, follow your provider’s current advice. If authorities issue a boil-water or do-not-use notice, follow that notice exactly. They address different risks, and boiling is not a universal way to make questionable water safe.
What to do if there is a boil-water notice
A boil-water notice is used when germs may be present. Use bottled water or boil tap water as specified by local authorities for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, washing food and preparing infant formula. CDC guidance says to bring clear water to a rolling boil for one minute, or three minutes above 6,500 feet, then cool it and store it in a clean, sanitized, tightly covered container. If water is cloudy, let it settle and filter it through a clean cloth, paper towel or coffee filter before boiling. See the CDC’s instructions for making water safe in an emergency.

Use the authority’s instructions if they differ from this general guidance. Ordinary filters designed to improve taste, odour or chemical quality are not a substitute for the steps required to address microbial contamination. Virginia health guidance explains the limits of filters during a boil-water advisory: Virginia Department of Health boil-water advisory guidance.
What to do if there is a do-not-use notice
Do not drink or use water covered by a do-not-use notice unless the authority specifically says a particular use is permitted. If fuel or toxic chemicals are suspected, do not try to make the water safe by boiling or ordinary disinfection. Boiling and disinfection do not remove heavy metals, salts or most chemicals, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Use another safe source and contact your local health department if you are uncertain what the notice allows.

Which water source or treatment should you use?
The right choice depends on whether you have a supply interruption or a safety notice, what hazard authorities identify, and whether a safe alternative is available. These options are not interchangeable.
- Provider-supplied or delivered water: Ask the provider where and when it is available and follow its handling instructions.
- Bottled water: Use it when directed or when you need an alternative safe source. For infant formula, do not assume bottled water is sterile or suitable; follow official infant-feeding advice. UK drought guidance notes that bottled water may not be sterile and may contain unsuitable sodium or sulphate levels.
- Boiling: A method for addressing germs when authorities issue a boil-water instruction. It does not remove most chemical contamination.
- Purification tablets: Consider them only if the local health authority’s instructions and the product label support their use for the specific situation. They do not address every chemical hazard.
- Filters: A filter intended for taste, odour or chemical quality should not be treated as a universal purifier or as a replacement for boil-water instructions.
A clean, food-safe container with a tight cover can store safe or properly treated water; it does not purify water. CDC provides emergency water-storage guidance at How to Make Water Safe in an Emergency. Do not use water from radiators or home-heating boilers. CDC distinguishes those from a household tap-water heater tank, which may be an emergency source under its guidance; follow local advice and avoid any source known to be contaminated.

What if your household has special needs or a private supply?
Households that need extra support
Older people, babies and young children, people with chronic conditions, and people affected by heat may need particular attention during an interruption. Ask the provider what assistance it can arrange, especially if someone cannot travel to a water collection point or depends on water for medical needs.
Private wells and other private supplies
If a private well or other private supply fails, use your contingency plan and seek advice from your local authority. Do not assume a public water company is required to deliver replacement water to a household on a private supply; responsibilities depend on location.

What UK water interruption rules say
These figures apply to UK public water supplies and should not be treated as universal standards. Ofwat says that for planned interruptions lasting longer than four hours, a company should normally give 48 hours’ notice. For a piped-supply failure, Ofwat says companies must provide at least 10 litres per person per day within the first 24 hours and maintain that provision until supply is restored: Ofwat guidance on supply interruptions.
The Drinking Water Inspectorate describes 10 litres per person per day for the first 24 hours and 20 litres per person per day during a prolonged event as a guideline in its discussion of UK public-supply failures: Drinking Water Inspectorate guidance. These scoped service figures do not establish a single preparation quantity for every household or a general entitlement outside the UK.
