A 75 MW data center expansion represents a substantial new power demand, but it does not tell you how much electricity the facility will actually consume or whether the local grid needs upgrades. If it drew 75 MW continuously for a full non-leap year, it would use about 657 GWh. The real impact depends on the site’s load profile, existing utility capacity, connection design, other planned demand and the results of local grid studies.

How much electricity is 75 MW?

Megawatts (MW) measure power at a given moment. Megawatt-hours (MWh) and gigawatt-hours (GWh) measure energy used over time. The distinction matters: a project announcement’s 75 MW could refer to requested service, added peak capacity or another project metric—not necessarily a steady draw.

At a constant 75 MW for every hour of a non-leap year, the calculation is 75 MW × 8,760 hours = 657,000 MWh, or 657 GWh. This is an illustration under a continuous-load assumption, not a forecast of a particular facility’s consumption. Actual demand varies with computing activity, cooling, redundancy design and operating patterns.

Before interpreting a project figure, check how the announcement defines “75 MW” and whether it refers to the expansion alone or a larger campus. Without that information, the number cannot establish actual annual energy use.

What could the expansion mean for the local grid?

A large, concentrated load can prompt several separate planning questions. The answers depend on the facility’s proposed connection point and the serving utility’s network, as well as other committed or proposed loads.

  • Connection capacity: Can the utility serve the requested load at the proposed location and voltage?
  • Local distribution: Would feeders, substations, transformers, protection equipment or other facilities need to be added or upgraded?
  • Transmission: Could the new demand, considered alongside other growth, require upgrades to the wider network?
  • Supply and operations: Is enough electricity available when the facility and other customers need it, and how does the facility’s pattern of use affect system operations?
  • Timing: Can the load ramp up in stages as service and grid work become available, or is the requested energization date earlier than planning and construction can accommodate?
  • Costs and rates: Which costs are assigned to the customer, which are recovered under utility tariffs, and how are costs allocated among customers?

A 75 MW figure alone does not establish that new lines or a substation will be built. It also cannot determine project cost, rate effects, reliability impacts or emissions. Those questions require location-specific information and applicable utility, regulator and grid-operator processes.

Who studies and approves a large new load?

Responsibilities vary by jurisdiction. In California, the California ISO says retail-load interconnections are not studied by CAISO: utilities’ tariffs and state regulators generally govern study, interconnection, rates and cost recovery. CAISO incorporates California Energy Commission demand forecasts into its transmission assumptions and planning. Utilities set technical standards for proposed connections, and relevant parties need transparent consumption information and real-time communication for forecasts and operations. California ISO: Large loads.

That California arrangement should not be assumed to apply elsewhere. The utility, regulator and grid operator—and the rules for studies, construction and cost allocation—depend on the project’s location.

What regional examples show—and what they do not

ERCOT: a 75 MW threshold for a specific process

In Texas, ERCOT’s June 18, 2026 release describes a PUCT-approved “Batch Zero” framework that groups qualified projects of 75 MW and greater into a combined study. The process is intended to assess future demand, allocate available grid capacity and identify needed transmission upgrades. ERCOT also describes pathways involving customer onsite generation and customer agreement to curtail load during local transmission constraints. This makes 75 MW a material planning threshold in that process, not a universal threshold for every utility or region. ERCOT: PUCT Approves ERCOT’s Batch Zero Process for Connecting Large Electricity Users While Protecting System Reliability for Texans.

ERCOT said it expected applicant classifications in August 2026 and a statewide plan in fall 2027. Those are announced milestones for the process, not guarantees about an individual project’s schedule or outcome.

Alberta: an interim capacity limit

In June 2025, the Alberta Electric System Operator described an interim approach covering up to 1,200 MW of large-load projects between 2025 and 2028. It applied to projects of 75 MW or greater and used municipal support, financial security and completed power-flow studies in project qualification. This is an Alberta-specific capacity limit, not a measure of capacity available to projects elsewhere. AESO: AESO Announces Interim Approach to Large Load Connections.

  • United States: The Department of Energy’s resource hub attributes an estimate of 4.4% of total U.S. electricity use in 2023 to Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s 2024 data center energy-use report. The same report projected a range of approximately 6.7% to 12% by 2028. These are national figures, and the latter is a projection—not a local forecast for this project. U.S. Department of Energy: Electricity Demand Growth Resource Hub.
  • California: The California Energy Commission says data centers were projected to account for about 1,000 MW, or 2% of California ISO peak demand, in early 2026, rising to 4,500 MW, or 9% of peak demand, by 2040. These figures describe California-specific context, not the grid serving an unidentified project. California Energy Commission: Data Centers.

What options can planners consider?

There is no universally best approach. The choices involve trade-offs in grid dependence, time to energization, firm-load reliability, cost allocation, emissions, permitting and the ability to respond to grid stress.

Approach What it can address What it does not establish
Utility service, with network upgrades if studies require them Connects the facility to the wider grid; studies and local rules determine necessary work, allocation and schedule. That existing capacity is sufficient, or that a particular upgrade or cost will result.
Phased energization Can align a staged increase in demand with available service and infrastructure. A quantified schedule for an unnamed project; timing depends on its circumstances and planning process.
Onsite generation and storage May support flexibility or reduce the amount drawn from the wider grid, depending on design and operation. That grid upgrades can be avoided, or that onsite supply is suitable at this site. Primary onsite generation also has distinct permitting implications.
Curtailable or flexible demand May provide a pathway for customers able to reduce use during local transmission constraints. That the facility’s computing tasks or contracts can tolerate the required reductions.

Backup generators should not be confused with primary supply. The California Energy Commission says data centers in California typically use backup generators during emergencies, testing and maintenance; that does not mean those generators routinely supply the facility’s main power. Some projects may propose onsite primary generation, which raises separate permitting considerations. California Energy Commission: Data Centers.

The Department of Energy identifies onsite power and storage as potential ways to support flexibility, while ERCOT describes self-supply and curtailment pathways in its Texas process. Their suitability and grid effects depend on the project and local rules. U.S. Department of Energy: Electricity Demand Growth Resource Hub · ERCOT: Batch Zero process.

What information would answer the local-impact question?

For a specific expansion, look for the project’s public filing or utility and grid-operator study. The key facts are:

  • the site, serving utility and proposed point of interconnection;
  • whether 75 MW means added peak capacity, requested service or another measure;
  • the expected load profile and any phased energization plan;
  • the study’s findings on connection capacity, distribution work and transmission upgrades;
  • the applicable tariff or regulatory decision explaining cost allocation; and
  • any proposed onsite primary supply, storage or contractual ability to curtail demand.

Without those details, the project’s spare local capacity, upgrade scope and cost, ratepayer treatment, reliability consequences and environmental effects remain unresolved.
