It does not reduce the disk’s logical maximum, and deleted Linux files do not guarantee an immediate, predictable drop in Windows storage use. To understand what changed, distinguish Linux filesystem usage, the VHDX’s virtual capacity, and its physical allocation on the Windows drive.
How do sparse VHDs save disk space?
WSL 2 stores each Linux distribution in an ext4-formatted VHDX file on the Windows host. The virtual disk grows as the distribution needs storage. When configured as sparse, it can have unallocated ranges that read as zeroes; Windows can deallocate zeroed ranges without changing the file’s logical size. This is how a sparse VHD can occupy less physical space on the host than its virtual capacity suggests. Microsoft’s WSL disk-space guidance and its Windows sparse-file documentation describe these distinctions.
Three figures can therefore differ:
- Linux filesystem usage: space used and available inside the distribution.
- VHDX logical capacity: the virtual disk’s maximum size as presented to Linux.
- Windows host allocation: the physical storage currently allocated to the VHDX on the Windows drive.
Deleting files may increase free space inside Linux without producing an immediate, visible reduction in host allocation. Microsoft describes sparse VHDs as able to shrink automatically, but its documentation does not specify a universal reclamation trigger, schedule, or amount for every deletion pattern or workload.
Does the 1 TB WSL disk size mean it uses 1 TB on my PC?
No. Microsoft lists 1 TB as the current default maximum virtual size for a WSL 2 VHD. That is a capacity limit, not a claim that the VHD already occupies 1 TB of physical space. The disk grows with use. Microsoft notes that older WSL releases used default maximums of 512 GB before WSL release 0.58.0 and 256 GB before that. See Microsoft’s explanation of WSL disk space.

Why is my WSL VHDX still large after I deleted files?
First check which measurement you are looking at. Linux may report more free filesystem space even when the Windows file’s apparent size or physical allocation has not visibly changed. Sparse-file behavior depends on zeroed ranges being deallocated, and the official WSL documentation does not promise that every file deletion will promptly shrink a VHDX by a particular amount.
To check space from inside a distribution, Microsoft documents this PowerShell command, replacing the placeholder with the distribution’s actual name:

wsl.exe --system -d <distribution-name> df -h /mnt/wslg/distro
This reports Linux-side filesystem information; it does not directly measure the VHDX’s physical allocation on Windows. If the command does not work, Microsoft suggests updating to the Store version with wsl --update or trying wsl df -h /. Microsoft documents these checks here.
Does sparse VHD shrink automatically?
That is the feature’s intended behavior, not a guarantee of an immediate or fixed reduction after each deletion. In its September 18, 2023 WSL update, Microsoft described sparse VHDs as automatically shrinking and added a command for managing the setting on existing distributions. The current WSL configuration reference lists sparseVhd as an experimental setting, with a default of false, for newly created VHDs. The current reference does not establish a deterministic schedule or savings amount for individual workloads. Read the September 2023 announcement and the current WSL configuration reference.

How do I enable sparse VHD in WSL?
There are two documented configuration paths: a setting for newly created VHDs and a management command for an existing distribution. Availability can depend on the installed WSL release, so check Microsoft’s current documentation if a setting or command is not recognized.
For newly created VHDs
In the WSL configuration file, set the experimental sparseVhd option to true under the appropriate experimental settings section. Microsoft’s current configuration reference says this automatically makes newly created VHDs sparse; the documented default is false. This setting is not described as retroactively converting existing VHDs. Check the configuration reference for the current syntax.

For an existing distribution
Microsoft’s September 2023 announcement documents this command, where <distro> is the distribution name and the final argument enables or disables sparse status:
wsl --manage <distro> --set-sparse <true/false>
For example, the documented form with sparse enabled is wsl --manage Ubuntu --set-sparse true, assuming the distribution is named Ubuntu. Confirm that the installed WSL release supports --manage and this option before using it. See Microsoft’s announcement.

What should I avoid when managing a WSL VHDX?
Do not casually move, edit, or access WSL distribution files in AppData with Windows tools. Microsoft warns that modifying, moving, or accessing these files that way could corrupt a distribution. For VHD maintenance, Microsoft’s disk-management instructions use wsl.exe --shutdown before VHD operations; this terminates running distributions and the WSL 2 utility virtual machine. Follow the instructions for the specific operation rather than treating shutdown alone as a maintenance procedure. See Microsoft’s disk-management guidance and the WSL basic commands reference.
Windows DiskPart has a general compact vdisk command for reducing the physical size of dynamically expanding VHDs. That general command description does not establish that it is a safe or universally compatible way to compact every sparse WSL VHDX. Microsoft documents the command here; do not infer a WSL-specific procedure from that page alone.
Quick Recap
How to tell whether the change helped
- Check Linux filesystem usage with the documented
df -hcommand. This tells you about space inside the distribution. - Identify the figure you want to reduce. Linux free space, VHDX logical capacity, and Windows physical allocation are different measurements.
- Confirm the right configuration path.
sparseVhd=trueapplies to newly created VHDs; the documentedwsl --manage <distro> --set-sparsecommand targets an existing distribution. - Check command support for your WSL release if the setting or management option is unavailable.
- Use WSL-managed maintenance guidance. Shut down WSL when Microsoft’s VHD instructions call for it, and avoid directly manipulating distribution files in AppData.
